Lloyd Johansson coat hangers Stirling Mortlock

Brumbies vs Reds (Super 14) from this weekend. Low scoring game, but pretty eventful. A bit of a punchup in the first half, and then this in the second.

Stirling Mortlock cops one in the face. The fact that Lloyd Johansson has forearms the size of my thighs makes the impact serious. Mortlock is knocked out cold and is taken from the field.

Johansson faced a SANZAR Judicial Officer in Brisbane & was given a two week suspension. He admitted the tackle was dangerous but stated it was not intentional but was an instinctive reflex action on an opponent taking an inside pass.

The referee’s assessment of the tackle was exactly this, which impacted on the decision to issue a yellow card and nothing worse.

The Judicial Officer however determined that the tackle was recklessly dangerous and a further penalty should be imposed as there was a need for a deterrent to combat this type of offence.

But for the facts that Johansson’s previous conduct had been exemplary and he had shown genuine remorse and had apologised personally to Mortlock, a longer suspension may have been appropriate.

  • I dunno........it looks bad when you see it from certain angles but when you see his arm connect, i dunno, probably wrong but it doesnt look that bad!!!.......but then again ive only ever been on the giving end of a coat hanger, not the receiveing so i dont really know what it feels like!

  • Looked a bit overplayed to be totally honest, obviously it was illegal and probably would knock you down, but i think mortlock was probably making an attempt to get the other guy sent off!

  • How, exactly, can you "overplay" being knocked out cold?

  • I went to school with Lloyd on the coast and every game he'd destroy someone with a clean sholder to the chest! I don't ever remember seeing him going for the head. clearly an accident brought about by the inside ball.

  • it was a switch not an inside ball....but you see the correct angle in slow motion only....its a stiff arm at 100 mile an hour to his neck area....that hurts.....

o and the guy that posted the second post....you sound hard dont you mate

  • it was the shoulder connecting with the head not the arm that did the damage which was done by the changing angle of the run.

Note Larkham pretending to be hard by pushing the guy before shitting his pants

  • think the commentators need to learn not to shit themselves whenever they see violence in a game of rugby, it could get irritating.
