Phil Bennett classic try 1977

This is one of those tries that you can watch over and over again. Sheer brilliance by the Welsh against the Scots at Murrayfield in 1977.

The commentary says it all, but some brilliant stepping to start it, and right at the end incredible hands, followed by one of the steps of the century that leaves the Scottish defenders lying on the floor helpless.

Phil Bennett scores under the posts to finish off what is commonly known and voted for as one of the best tries of all time.

Apologies for the poor quality, but enjoy this remarkable bit of classic stepping and passing from the team that dominated in the seventies.

Note: As with all videos featured on here, if anyone has a better quality version of this, please don't hesitate to let us know. Thanks.

  • one of the passes is completely forward.

  • From the angle it might seem that way, but you are obviously dumb. The ref would have called it.

  • his don't dumb his right and the ref is wrong it was forward

The welsh were good in the 70's? HA! - what happend lol

  • "C" you are obviously the "dumb" one, just because it isnt called doesnt mean its not forward....check out all the videos on this site!! just cause the ref doesnt call a punch doesnt mean it is ok! ever noticed the ref is one man with 1 pair of eyes he cant see everything!

  • It's a great try regardless of whether you think it was forward or not, and it was pretty lateral anyway. I've seen worse passes ignored.

I think you're missing the point.

  • Bring back Bill McClaren!

  • I agree with Admin there - what is with so many commenters on this site completely ignoring class and sweet play to focus on imagined negatives? There is something wrong with you if you can't appreciate good rugby unless it comes from your own team.

Oh, and to the anonymouses ou there - pick a name fer gods sake. Y'know, you were probably even born with one.

  • Nope, i saw the point of this whole video, and it is a classic try!! i was just commenting on someone elses comment rather than the video!

By Anonymous Craig, at September 06, 2007 11:57 AM

  • That wasn't aimed at you Craig since a) you have a name, and b) you were actually saying something something constructive. Both of which put you in the enlightened minority around here! Keep it up :)

  • if you want to see steps then watch william ryder from fiji. he's a one to watch!

  • who cares what you think about forwards, backwards, upsidedown, inside out...phil and the boys back then were and still are rugby legends, and no one since has matched their skill or determination! not bad for bunch of parttime welshmen was it..and i'm not welsh!! and as for the guy who said what happend to the welsh...you'll live to eat those words one day buddie...then we'll have plenty of ha ha ha ha's

By Blogger richard, at October 17, 2007 11:17 AM

  • To the little kid who posted "welsh were good in the 70's? HA! What happened!?" Yes the Welsh were good in the 70's, were also very good in the 50's and 60's, if you didn't know this then you probably don't know a lot about rugby so if you're going to try and take the p*ss then at least know a bit about the sport before making comments like that.

At one time Wales were one of, if not the best team in the world. We're obviously far from that now, welsh rugby has been in a mess for a long time and it's still years and years from being sorted out. Hopefuly though one day we'll see Wales challenging the top nations again.

  • what an amazing try, beauty moves that left the defenders lookin around
and its alot for me to say that on this video, i hate the welsh but you cant ignore amazing rugby like that

  • Wales have a long tradition of outstanding backs. I hope they come back with a great side, with avarage fowards, just to get the ball to their backs, and unleash all the danger of excelent players, such as Dwayne Peel, Tom Shanklin, Shane Williams and that other guy from the Ospreys... James Hook.

  • that is quite possibly the best try i have seen. What happened to the welsh? they're rubbish now.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 02, 2008 6:31 PM

  • The best center this game have ever seen was welsh too: Prince Gwyn. A true legend.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 02, 2008 7:23 PM

  • wow thanks for that last comment about us welsh mate. we had so many fantastic players back then. tiny little phil bennett, JPR, Gerald. "the king" Barry John. the list goes on.
i hope we can return to our best one day

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 04, 2008 1:26 PM

  • Looks like we improved quicker than we thought we would. One of the best tries ever.

By Anonymous geraint, at March 12, 2008 2:13 PM

  • As for the best try ever, take a look at the barbarians v the all blacks, gareth edwards classic.

By Anonymous angus, at March 29, 2008 12:48 AM

  • A truly marvelous try but they were let down by some truly naff dives over the line weren't they? Look at Shane Williams's dives these days, he's in orbit at one point, I'm sure....

By Anonymous RuckOff, at August 14, 2008 6:34 PM

  • Brilliant try! =)
