Rupeni Caucaunibuca vs Scotland WC 2003

Give it to Caucau, and anything can happen. Scotland found that out the hard way in the World Cup in 2003. Two well finished Fijian tries by none other than 'The Man' himself; Rupeni Caucaunibuca.

The first try was a bit controversial as there was a definite forward pass before he got the ball, but that aside, his acceleration and strength was incredible to see.

The second was in a totally different class to most individual efforts you'll see. Getting the ball on his own 22, Caucau literally breezes past the Scottish defence with his immense speed and incredible low centre of gravity.

One of the biggest disappointments for me so far at the 2007 World Cup is that this great player is nowhere to be seen. He's currently serving three month doping ban for testing positive for marijuana. There is talk however of him technically being able to make an appearance in the later stages of the tournament, but I'm not sure how true that is or if it would ever happen unfortunately.

  • Rupeni had also been fired by his french club Agen 'cause he was enable to take a plane and come back from fidji for pre-season training camp in july. And he did not respond to the fijian coach convocations... In Agen, he did the same for 6 months in 2006 and arrived 4 months after the beginning of the championship. But this year he had not learned the lesson. Last game he played in France during april 2007 he was really overweighted.

  • That Caucau is a player with a serious torubles with discipline is something wich is vox populi. But I serioulsy doubt that marijuana can improve the performance of an athlete. Even overweighted and stoned, he is a Monster of Rugby.

  • the best thing he could do is head back to New Zealand, get back into the pacific island communities and atmosphere and play some rugby with his mates on a hard track.
These island boys need their mates/families around them in a laid back lifestyle. Their rugby benefits from that. Rupeni went to france for the wrong reasons. The euro. That was never going to be enough to keep him happy in a country like France. Talk about worlds apart...Fiji....France hmmmm.

  • Is the "french doctor" right about him bein fired from agen? I hope he was so I can watch more of him either in the GP of the super 14. I rate him as the best winger in the world when hes fit, as an unfit player i watched him piss all over gloucester. he is awesome, figi need him if they want a chance of beating wales!

  • it sucks that we cant watch the clips, but lets get what we can up and continue to talk about the great matches in this WC

  • What's the problem with smoking a bit of marijuanna?

It doesn't enhance your performance in anyway. And it's not like the police or the law care about people smoking green these days... You don't even get arrested or fined unless you've got like a truck full of the stuff.

    Free Caucaunibuca... And the weed!

  • marijuana is prohibited because it masks other products. Don't be so naive...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 23, 2007 10:10 am

  • Umm, French Doctor - I don't know where you got your medical training but ganja doesn't 'mask' anything. It's prohibited because it's illegal.

By Blogger fishboy, at September 23, 2007 1:00 pm

  • It masks by deforming the right levels of some products on blood analisys, alcaloids and corticoïds for example. And the news of the day for Rupeni fans : SORRY BOYS ! Rup's making another trip, it seems that he will land on Paris today, and come back to Agen (who will play in Second Division next season with Toulon) . His agent said he's fit after a personal training in Fidji, and want to play with Agen. The president of Agen said he had not broke his contract yet. And he could play his first pre-season training match this sunday ! Holy Rupeni... Some are already waiting for him at the airport ! Pray ! Boyz ! :D

  • I stand corrected - thanks for the explanation :)

By Blogger fishboy, at September 28, 2007 3:10 am

  • OK he's a weed smoking rebel, he's still the best runner in the world, shane williams, rocokoko, howellet, habana, and possibly better than the recent jason robinson as it pains me to say......yea right.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 10, 2007 8:22 pm

  • hes fast.. but habana would leave him sittin

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 25, 2007 6:57 pm

  • yep, sittin at the TRYLINE! Haha!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 01, 2007 11:38 am

  • I mean sittin there waitin for HABANA! No disrespect,I think Brian's n awesome athlete, but Rupeni was raw talent. He wud change direction at pace with the greatest of ease. This was what we loved about Rupeni. The initial sense of creating something outta nothing. Anyway, Rupeni wud have given the CHEETAH the headstart.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 01, 2007 11:51 am

  • actually Habana came out and said that rupeni, when hes fit, is the fastest player in world rugby. so even Habana thinks he'll b beaten

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2008 12:58 pm

  • whether fit or unfit, caucau will still run circles around habana.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 28, 2008 1:44 am

  • Ah, Caucau, if you'd just stayed in NZ and applied yourself instead of pissing off to Fiji every couple of months and smoking the ganja, you would have been the greatest winger i the game, one the greatest ever.
And Fiji should have definatley won that match, without a doubt. Scotland were abysmal in 2003 and the ref gave them that game on a platter. Thank god justice was served in 2007 and Fiji got thru to the quarters. In terms of natural ability they are one of the best teams in the world. Fijians just make awesome rugby players.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 28, 2009 12:12 pm

  • if u compare all the wingers from different countries, u'd never find anyone who's got the skills Caucau has..the side step, acceleration off the mark, create something from nothing, break tackles, etc. To name a few wingers: Habana's got the speed but can't break tackles or perform side steps; same thing for Howlet, Rokocoko and even Jason Robinson.
My point is there's no player that can replace this guy here, the so-called "Bua bullet".
to all rugby fans out there, we all hope that Rupeni Caucau will appear again in the world of rugby. Only time will tell. RUPENI CAUCAUNIBUCA: THE BEST RUGBY WINGER IN THE WORLD..good luck rups.
