Matt Banahan flattens Brent Russell

Saracens fullback Brent Russell gets taken to pieces here from this big tackle by Bath's 6ft7 left wing... yes, that's right - 6ft7. Matt Banahan is an up and coming English winger who is bigger than most forwards.

There has been a lot of talk about him being another wing in the mould of a Jonah Lomu. His size and pace make him a valuable asset to any side, but it's in the Sevens arena that Banahan first got noticed.

Banahan used to play hockey but took up rugby in recent years and his since flourished. He started out as a lock, but with his speed and size he soon made the move to the wing and has been making waves ever since.

He scored a hat-trick against Leeds earlier in the season, and will surely fight for higher honours in the not too distant future.

Against pocket rocket Brent Russell, it truly was a mismatch of epic proportions. Watch how Banahan actually tries to get lower to hit him, but just can't and ends up hitting him pretty high in the end. 6ft7 vs 5ft9 shouldn't be allowed.

Butch James also puts in a pretty big hit just before Banahan takes Russell to the cleaners.

  • Hockey...are we talking field hockey or ice hockey?

Because at 6'7" he'd be a monster on the ice. I'd probably put him on the blue line, but that kind of size would be valuable anywhere.

  • haha nice to see butchie using his arms for once. well, almost.

  • The James one is illegal, just a shoulder charge, Banahan just looks awkward, no attempt at a proper tackle.
Jeff they should just get Tie Domi or Jordin Tootoo to sort him out.

  • You can take Butch James out of Druban but you can't take the thug out of Butch.

  • high tackle from banahan on russell altho its difficult to get low on a small guy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 28, 2008 3:53 pm

  • its not a shoulder charge by James, his arm is up

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 28, 2008 3:55 pm

  • Yeah, even in ice hockey the guy would be a monster..
Zdeno Chara (the tallest guy in the NHL) is 6'9" (206cm), and I don't think anyone else comes within 2-3 (5-8cm) inches of Chara in the NHL.

Forget field hockey.. they don't make sticks long enough... do they?

  • Banahan does very well to actually keep the tackle legal. If anyone's youtubed his name then you wouldn't be surprised if he has an ice hockey background, there's a nice one of him getting a red card.

  • I love it when people are put in the same class as Jonah Lomu.

Heard it all before about Steve Hanley (If memory serves correct) - the guy who played and scored a try in the Wales v england clash in webmbley, those many scott gibbs replays ago. He was compared to Lomu but he never amounted to much.

  • pretty good video
even though i'm canadian i'm not a hockey fan much
but i know hed be intense on the ice if thats the kind of hockey he played
he could fight Chara, and maybe win haha
for the record sure the 10 inch diffrence in height is alot, but look at some of the locks and props who have been hitting guys like gregan and stringer for years, not much coverage on them getting hit my big guys, mismatches happen haha, and apparently make good videos

ps the butch james hit was illegal, like a hockey body check, maybe he played hockey to hahahh

  • The great thing about Chara is that they had to modify the NHL's max stick length just for him. The max length was still to small!

By Blogger Jeff, at January 29, 2008 7:14 am

  • banaham would have been field hockey. There is very little ice hockey in england. as with NHL, they would have just enlarged a stick to make it fit.

  • i figured it was field, haha
and they'd have to make the stick like a foot longer, guys like 5'9 gotta bend over to play haha, he'd have a broken back by like 25 if he kept at it
i think its funny about the Chara stick thing too haha

  • He didn't even have the ball in his hands early tackle

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 19, 2008 2:55 am

  • banahan did used to be a pretty decent field hockey player

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 02, 2008 6:10 pm

  • definetly think butch james's hit was way better

By Blogger Unknown, at December 04, 2008 2:39 am

  • Yeh, it was field hockey. I used to play football and hockey against him back in the day, he was pretty good all-round sportsman

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 6:06 pm

  • Was an ok hit, not the biggest.
