Mark Regan handbags, with comedy by Brian Moore

Former England hooker Brian Moore is proving to be quite the entertainer this year, with his outspoken commentary becoming a feature whenever England play. Moore rips into his England team in a way that no commentator before him has done, and it's quite refreshing to say the least. Celebrating and lambasting his players as though he were a coach, Moore is blunt as ever.

As a neutral or even an England supporter, I'm sure it's nice to hear that someone acknowledges when players are doing foolish things on the field. Ian Balshaw, who's not the most popular amongst fans currently, gets literally shouted at by Moore at the beginning of this clip. The 'You're a fullback!!' comment wouldn't normally be heard by professional commentators. But hey, it's funny to hear that type of thing in the middle of a serious test match.

Mark Regan also got told off by Moore for his swinging elbows on a French player who was holding his collar. The ref handled it well though in my view, with no further action needed.

As for Brian Moore, he calls it as he sees it. He's bias and he admits that, which is good to see and makes for some entertaining commentary, something that's been lacking in the past.

  • Moore is an unashamed England fan, an expert, but also unbiased in his commentary (yes you can be all three). That's a great and increasingly rare quality. He doesn't feel the need to smother his support in order to provide expert commentary and, as such, he's more entertaining to listen to. It also allows him to be England's most vocal critic much of time.

Thanks for the clip, nice to see a range of topics being covered.

  • And Regan should be dropped along with Balshaw. Neither are good enough at this level, but at least Regan is effective at getting in people's faces and distracting them. Like another England hooker I remember...

  • Lol, Brian Moore is such a great character, he congratulates teams that are playing against england when they do something well, and bollocks england when they do something badly.....after this game, does anyone else think he has slight anger towards Balshaw?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 11:47 am

  • Im sorry, but i would have to disagree with you guys, Moore is a twat along with Guscott. They have no respect or time for the other nations and never praise them. Keith Wood and Jonathon Davies have the perfect balance between praising teams, criticising and reporting in general. I get the feeling they genuinely respect all 6 teams in the competition.

Forgive me if iam wrong but that just my opinion.

  • I have to agree. Although it is funny to sometimes hear Moore slagging off England like a fan rather than acting like a proper commentator, he is unbelievably patronising to other teams and has very little knowledge about non-English based players. But i suppose the majority of viewers on the bbc are English so they have to cater to their public.

If you want a proper pundit/commentator check out George Hook on RTÉ.

  • Keith Wood is not that un-biased, but hes just a complete legend and a complete rarity. He seems to be pro-Celtic in his comments.

Brian Moore is pretty damn un-biased if you put everything into context, here is an ex England player commentating on an England that threw the games against Wales, then quit playing after twenty minutes against the Italians, and then had a must win game in Paris. He keeps his cool, except when he sees idiotic Balshaw hovering over a ruck. God hes an idiot.
Tait can actually score from anywhere and hes probably bigger than Balshaw so its impossible to say why Balshaw is fullback as he cant kick, tackle or score.

And Regan should be dropped, hes not going to see out the next year on the rugby field so no point playing him, hes a long way from the best, but then again experience in the international arena at hooker is vital

  • Please, some-one find the clip where Moore
calls argh I cant remember who, one of the tall forwards, a 'half-wit' as they touch the ball after a french restart fails to go ten metres

That was comedy genius and the most honest commentating ive heard in Europe.

Or the clips where he gets annoyed that England kept kicking the ball back to the Italians.
How commentating should be! What you want to hear!

    By Blogger aj.uk, at February 28, 2008 1:19 pm

  • Brian and Eddie have a good a balance between them. Brian speaks like he is playing and he knows what its like in the international boiler house. Eddie keeps him in check and slaps his wrist when required. Funny, factual and entertaining. Why are people suprised when ex-international player commentators are happy or sad when their country fails or wins? Of course they will be biased. As are the supporters. Italian, French commentators wont be cheering on anyone else but we dont hear it.
JD's voice is a little squeaky for commentary and it makes me want to cough for him...but again, no better man for the job.
Brian and Eddie are the best combo in my view.

  • aj.uk
    Yes, it was Reagan again.
    Funny stuff.

By Blogger AK, at February 28, 2008 1:37 pm

  • please upload the bit where england gathered (then fumbled) a french kick off when it was cleary not going to go 10 metres. he shouted something like "DON'T GATHER IT!" then when England did gather it "HALF WIT!" had me laughing for ages!

  • Brian Moore is top notch, Guscott is a tosser, and i've finally grown to respect JD's opinions. The bbc commentary is far far far superior to the god awful commentary from messrs barnes n co on itv in the world cup. they were w***!

Balshaw's in the squad because Ashton has a soft spot for him. Its awful, but every coach does have their proteges and favourites. Like Eddie O'Sullivan and girvan "dont worry he'll be back in the team next week" Dempsey. yes he can finish and he can quite effectively kick, but he brings no attacking play to the ireland back three, and never comes into the line other than to poach a try at the end of a move someone else starts. Play geordan murphy at fullback, not on the wing, because hes a fullback in the old mould, hes a flair player, and it showed at the weekend against scotland (who could do with a girvan dempsey to round off any of their moves, rather than knock it on inches from glory, or concede a cheap penalty after putting in the hard yards).

getting back to the point, it should be tait at fullback, and simpson daniel on the bench, and cipriani on bench, so simpson-daniel can cover centre and wing for subs, and cipriani can cover flyhalf and fullback for subs, simple. i hope Ashtons reading this, you northern monkey!!

  • Deffo agree on the Guscott front he doesn't have what it takes in terms of commentary. Plus has anyone noticed how fat he's getting? My top 5 English commentators/panelists,

    1. Nigel Starmer-Smith
    2. Brian Moore
    3. Will Greenwood
    4. Dewi Morris
    5. Martin Johnson

Plus I once heard Gareth Chilcott do commentary and it was hilarious.

  • moore is fantastic e.g. form the france game:

eddie: Rougerie looks disappointed to be brought off

brian: he shouldn't be, he's had a crap game!

the only rugby matches my sister watches are the england ones when moore is commentating.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 3:13 pm

  • i'm not sure if the above comment is by the real adedayo adebayo but i agree either way. cipriani is only 20 and needs time to get used to the international standard - look what happend to anthony allen - brought straight in too early and had his confidence knocked.
balshaw is awful and must go - i think moore said during the france game that he gets nervous everytime a high ball goes up. that was around the time a big up-and-under went up and balshaw jumped for it so badly that he didn't even get close enough to get a touch on it. clown. also i can't stress enough how much i hate stuart barnes - i think i even prefer campese!!!!

  • In america, we watch the 6N on Setanta. Setanta usually brings in the RTE feeds, but this past weekend, used BBC.

From what I saw of BBC this past weekend, the RTE crews are generally more even-handed.

It does seem that so many of the interesting color commentators are hookers (Kearns, Wood, Moore)... It's the same in American football, the big uglies (linemen) make better commentators than the prettyboys.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 3:30 pm

  • Im sorry but Will Greenwood is a class A tool when it comes to comentary. His comentary was shocking in the world cup. Even when england were not playing he was commentating about them.
Saying that as a welsh man i dont mind Brian Moore as i do find him quite funny at times i.e the half wit incident.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 3:31 pm

  • I loved it when Ian "can't catch the ball" shaw completely miss-timed a catch under high ball and Brian Moore screamed at him:

"OH WHAT SORT OF CATCH WAS THAT?! YOU HALF-WIT!!!"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 3:49 pm

  • I have found Moore to have gotten a lot better than when he started, he is a clever man and a good speaker, him and Butler compliment each other well. My fave pundit is Jiffy, good sense of humour and with a down to earth delivery. The half wit comment was fantastic.

John Inverdale and Healey drive me mad just awful and condescending to all other teams.

Robertson on 5Live is apalling, the man jest bellows utter crap. If I am driving and want to catch a game he just ruins it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 4:31 pm

  • Its a love hate relationship with moore for me, him and and Eddie Butler, (the other commentator have the funniest back-and-forth arguments, particularly when its Wales vs England.

Brian: Now who the hell was that to!? what was the point of that pass!

Eddie: Well Brian it was to one of the next 3 players along the line, a missed pass i believe.

    (silence)

You get the feeling Brian's just bitten back "SHUT UP EDDIE" :D

great stuff. but as a wales fan sometimes his bias gets on my nerves.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 4:44 pm

  • i cannot believe how may people like Brian Moore, his very tone of voice is annoying, not to mention his obnoxious comment. "your a fullback" look they call it a back three for a reason for christ sake.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 5:47 pm

  • - "What on earth are they doing?" -Moore
    - "I think England were trying to kick the pa..."
    - "I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY WERE TRYING!" -Moore

Or something along those lines, from the French game was another funny moment i thought

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 5:58 pm

  • I think these two commentators really go well together, and actually Moore is great with his comments, he does congratulate teams when they make good moves. As for Jonathan Davies..that guy has the most irritating voice known to man, and he is a cock by far, yes he was a grand player back in the day, but does he not realise that ofcourse its very easy to make comments about what players "should" have done when you have some nice camera angles available to you. Keith Wood is great, although he is tottally patriotic to Ireland, but yes agreed he is unbiased. Brian Moore has a great scope of players over the world and i think is a great commentator......you want commentators like the SA ones??? you know plain flat voices and not biased at all.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 6:26 pm

  • brian moore is pretty good alright, but he's a rank amateur compared to george hook on RTE

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 7:38 pm

  • Moore is a bit of hit and miss for me.. can be entertaining but also a pain at times.

The Aussie bunch are without a doubt the most enjoyable to listen to. Greg Martin, Greg Clark, and Phil Kearns are the most entertaining commentators around. If you disagree, I can only think that it's because you've never heard them.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 7:50 pm

  • the funny thing is Regan was all overthem lying ontop an dgrabbing shirts.

gets some of his own treatment and act's like alittle girl.

i know he's gone on record saying he's pleased he got under peoples skin.

    he's just an embarresment.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 8:42 pm

  • Moore: I just can't undersatnd why he can't stand up and defend.

Eh.....perhaps cos one of the French players is holding him down!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2008 9:34 pm

  • Sorry but Moore and all the BBC commentators are all biased and apart from Moore's patriotic garbage rants, they all sing from the same hymn sheet - no insight, controversial statements or actually speak their mind. The BBC have become like SKY just saying what they think everyone wants to hear.

I highly recommend checking out George Hook, Brent Pope and Conor O'Shea's punditry on RTE.
They have a great chemistry and you get some QUALITY quotes from Hook everytime. He's a grumpy old man but he's entertaining!
    Serioulsy worth checking out

  • Brilliant was laughing and agreeing with Moore during the game. He's brilliant especially later on in the game wen he's going crazy about Vainikolo not being used!!

Great clip, good job RD on the range of clips!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 29, 2008 12:17 pm

  • I think it's fantastic the way that Moore yells "you're a fullback!" at Balshaw.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2008 4:31 pm

  • Guys re-read all of these, you sound like a bunch of fags! do you really want someone straight down the line, who doesnt get angry over bad play and doesnt get enthusiastic over good play??? i can sure as hell say i love it when commentators get irritable, and i love it when Keith Wood makes little comments like: "Ireland win by 50 points obviously"

They have all played rugby like you and I and they want their team to win and they want a laugh at the same time....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2008 11:33 pm

  • Watching bbc's prmieship highlights Brian was pretty much singing after a charge down!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2008 4:49 pm

  • both commentators are absolute monkeys. how they got the job i dont know, i have to switch on 5live and listen to commentry from that with england games! brian moore sounds like barry from the chuckle brothers and the other one is constantly making wrong calls.

brian moore maybe unbias, but he certainly cannot commentate to save his life. especially when he lost it against italy over englands kicking wtf! i agree with the others, JD and KW talk the talk.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2008 7:43 pm

  • Shut the f*ck up and mute the whole f*cking lot if its such a big deal!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2008 7:53 pm

  • Moore was on top form in the Italy game. Spat the dummy when England kept kicking the ball away. Would love to see it on here

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 12:03 pm

  • i did mute it you peenarse, if you'd read the comment - i turned on 5live instead.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 10:49 pm

  • brian moore is england through and through. if you watch any rugby on sky, stuart barnes is always slagging england off. brian makes it more entertaining because he is england.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 05, 2008 8:38 pm

  • Brian Moore Is a twat :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 19, 2008 9:45 pm

  • Well brian Moore is the ultimate dick, who loves the sound of his own voice. Talking crap all the time. I almost lose interest in the match. Turning the sound off is also not the way to watch a game, but how can one commentator be so bad?

I hope the BBC gets some sense and gets someone less idiotic and irritating.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 22, 2008 4:56 pm

  • I really can't believe how many people like Moore/Butler they are absoluuuuutly shocking. They ruin every game of rugby that they commentate on, by slagging everything off and focusing on all the bad points, people are human! they're not going to be perfect! Whereas on the other hand you have the sky commentators( Stuart Barnes and Miles Harrison, Will Greenwood, Will Chignle) now they are a different class, you can enjoy the game, and have a bit of fun too.
    Jake

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 22, 2008 3:08 pm

  • the Scottish commentator, andy nichol? he gets on me nerves, he is the most negative commentator even and certainly the most biased!

Moore and Butler are comedy, and make good points... its more like they are coaching people on what to do rather than always describing whats happening

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 30, 2008 9:33 pm

  • WHERE IS BALSHAW?!.''Ridiculous!''

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 04, 2008 8:51 pm

  • Everyone will hate me for saying this, but, I hate Brian moor, not quite sure why, but i'd actually prefer silence in a match than his voice and commentary. Oh well Jonathen Davies - Best commenatator.

    In my opininon

By Anonymous Ezra, at March 29, 2009 5:38 pm

  • brian moore spends more time talking about referee's decisions than talking about rugby. he is the worst commentator in the world and a pain in the arse to listen to. fuck him and his petition.
