England Saxons off to a good start at the Churchill Cup

A hat-trick from winger Matt Banahan ensured England Saxons began their Churchill Cup campaign with a convincing win over the USA in Ottawa on the weekend.

The Saxons took a 24-10 half-time lead through two tries from Banahan and George Skivington, with Gavin DeBartolo touching down for the Eagles.

The visitors dominated the second half with scores from Anthony Allen, Banahan, Ben Foden and a penalty try.

And the last 10 minutes saw Tom Biggs and Ugo Monye adding further tries.

Fly-half Ryan Lamb had a fine game, kicking over eight conversions and adding a penalty, as well as pulling the creative strings in midfield.

The nine-try performance in humid conditions was the perfect start to the Saxons' tour of North America.

Note: This is unfortunately the only footage we have available at the moment, so while not perfect, it's still worth seeing if you're interested in following the Saxons' progress.

  • Some ALright tries in the footage. Did anyone notice that when the number 5 for the saxons scored there was a great handoff it looked a bit like a round the corner Butch James. Oh and nothing to do with this but does any one know if Chester Williams is coaching the Emerging Springboks?

  • I was at this game. At my home pitch no less. Honestly, the Americans played really well for the first 20 minutes. Then the flood gates opened. It was honestly boring to watch it was such a mismatch

  • speedster, nice one.
agreed, why would you go out of your way to say you have no interest in the clip? It tells you alot about a person, not that I'm interested...see what I did there?
It is always good to see the Saxon squad play albeit against a weaker side. Emerging players should be kept an eye on.

  • hey guys i played in this match and let me tell you foden is the dirtiest shit i've ever seen!! the amount of digs he bottled on us in the rucks was awful!!

    wat a jerk eh.

  • "its no great feat to go on tour to the USA there is no decent rugby teams over there."

Exactly what do you base that on? There's over 1400 clubs in the US, and they very rarely get any coverage.

  • you guys seriously have trouble with your geography, Ottawa is the national capital of Canada it's not in the USA

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 10, 2008 11:48 pm

  • Yes I think the back three did incredably well - Fonden should in the England tam vs New zeland.
I feel that the other winger. forget his name peformed slightyyyy better than banahan. He was more elusive...

    What you guys think?

  • how come the saxons thrashed them. and england in thw world cup struggled to a victory? was this usa a weaker team?

  • in respones to Bill saying
"Exactly what do you base that on? There's over 1400 clubs in the US"

yes there is 1400 clubs. but they are all rubbish thats why they get no coverage. also why dont you try and name a few of those teams and also a league they play in!!!

  • to bill

1600 clubs with no coverage that proves that they have no quality at all. i couldnt name one american rugby side and i doubt many people could
