All Blacks crush the Wallabies in Auckland

New Zealand snapped a two-game losing streak by thrashing Australia 39-10 in their Tri-Nations, Bledisloe Cup match at Eden Park on Saturday.

New Zealand dominated the match and kept their hopes of defending their Tri-Nations title alive after winning their 19th game in a row at their Auckland stronghold.

All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter had an outstanding night with the boot, kicking five penalties and two conversions for a tally of 19 points.

With injured captain Richie McCaw making his return, the All Blacks played with far more determination than in their 34-19 loss to Australia last week.

Loosehead prop Tony Woodcock scored a brace of tries within four minutes midway through the first half, doubling the previous amount he had scored in 41 tests, after twice crashing over from close range.

The second was a slick planned move after a lineout on Australia's five metre line. The ball went to Ali Williams at the back of the lineout who immediately knocked it down for Woodcock to force his way over.

New Zealand had shot out to an 18-3 lead before Australia responded with a classy try to fullback Adam Ashley-Cooper, who was on the end of a slick backline move after a rare period of Australian pressure.

After leading 21-10 at halftime the All Blacks struck early in the second half, with inside centre Ma'a Nonu crashing over after New Zealand had forced a turnover inside Australia's 22.

Nonu scored again in injury time to give New Zealand a vital four-try bonus point in the battle for the Tri-nations crown. They now lead the table from Australia then South Africa.

  • Abs deserved it, but the last try was not a try. He did not get downward pressure on the ball. Sometimes I wonder what these replay refs are watching.

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 02, 2008 9:40 pm

  • Jonathan, you do not need to apply pressure to the ball just aslong as the torso, hands or fingers are connecting to the ball which is connecting to the ground.

So it is a definite try.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 02, 2008 9:45 pm

  • well williams certainly backs up his haka gestures with a storming game.

Aust always gives the impression they are oh so lucky. When opponents break their line somehow they scramble to defend. When they are in the opponents 22 somehow they always seem to score. Well their luck ran out a little today vs the ABs. Elsom was missed for sure, Mccaw majestic and prominent as you would expect.

Fantastic tri-nations. Rugby is at its finest in the southern hemisphere, no question. Any other team in the world playing in the trinations besides the big 3 would have been whooped.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 02, 2008 10:53 pm

  • Anon is correct, for a try to be scored all there has to be is upperbody contact between player and ball and ball and ground simultaneously.

  • TV cameras need to focus less on clowns like Ali Williams and Matt Dunning when showing the intensity between two teams during the Haka...

That said, how about the look on Woodcock's face after each try?? Like a schoolboy, chuffed with having scored, great to see!

    Giteau is pure genius.

  • "LAW 12. TRY AND TOUCH-DOWN
Grounding the ball is the act of a player who
    (a)
while holding the ball in his hand (or hands) or arm (or arms) brings the ball in contact with the ground, or

    (b)
while the ball is on the ground either

places his hand (or hands) or arm (or arms) on it with downward pressure, or
falls upon it and the ball is anywhere under the front of his body from waist to neck inclusive.
Picking up the ball from the ground is not grounding it."

Sorry, in my opinion Nonu did not do either.

I am a neutral and have no axe to grind and the ABs deserved their win.

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 02, 2008 11:27 pm

  • I just watched Nonu's final try again and he flat out dropped it!!

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 02, 2008 11:35 pm

  • It was a mess, and I wish he'd just got it down properly and cleanly, but by the letter of the law it was probably a try.

    This part works for me:
    "(b)
while the ball is on the ground either

places his hand (or hands) or arm (or arms) on it with downward pressure
    "

Ball touching ground, hand touching ball = try.

I would understand if it wasn't given though of course. And that bonus point from it may well have a huge outcome on the result of the tournament.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 02, 2008 11:41 pm

  • I didn't think that try ought to be awarded either from the video replay, but as an AB supporter, I don't mind.

  • Nonu's last try was a joke! o well at least if the tri nations goes down to a point and NZ win because of that try, some of the bitterness of the WC forward pass may fade away. in the words of Borat.....not

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 1:26 am

  • i gotta agree the try looked questionable - and yer right caucau - in the scheme of things in such a close competition who knows how important that 1 point will be .

By Blogger boomshanka, at August 03, 2008 1:33 am

  • where did nonu's neck go?? he could play prop with that body :P

anywho, last try was NO try

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 2:14 am

  • It was very, very close that try.

But you will see he's not in touch and it he just got a couple of fingers left on the ball when it was on the ground.

    That is a try.

Either way, Australia got hammered and I was really surprised to see that. We probably would of got a forth try anyway if Ted didn't start calling the bench and ruined the intensity of the team.

This TriNations is turning rather epic.

sorry m8 but you are the knob ali williams had a great game of rugby out there one of the contenders for man of the match be appreciative we have players like him to provide us with some of the entertainment we can find on this site

  • im very happy to see Nonu score 2 tries in this because he had a shocker last week and i think he took a lot of slack.. and thats the best way to hit back
good ABs performance and some entertaining rugby
cant wait to watch the all blacks play again whenever that is
    a question
when the all blacks play at their best.. is there anyone who can stop them?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 3:14 am

  • If you think about all the tries that have been awarded according to the TMO in both NRL and Super 14 games, the TMO's are consistent with their grounding protocols: if the player has not relinquished contact with the ball during the whole period of grounding and if the ball makes contact with the ground, it is a try.

Simple - Nonu scored a try, but he nearly butchered it. Funny how he looks kinda fat running full speed...

Anyone see Nonu's first try? He dummied two defenders. Hilarious

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 3:42 am

  • First of all let me say I love rugby dump I check everyday, but some of us live in America, and haven't seen the game yet so as soon as I log in, it ruins the game for me because I now know the score. I'm not saying don't put it up just have a spoiler warning or something. But all and all Great Site, I love it. I tell all my friends about this site.

By Blogger Hendrick, at August 03, 2008 4:39 am

  • I cant believe that Nonu got that try, it was so obvious he dropped it. At 8:41 you can see the ref with a dumb smile thinking "Theres 100k in my pocket" for being so fucking biased the whole game. But the AB's wanted it more and did play the better football, but that ref, touch judges and the TMO all need to get fired. The touch judges missed so many offsides and then they tell the ref about something that happened 10 minutes ago which had no affect on the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 8:46 am

  • what the hell was ashley-cooper doing? he waited for the ball to go out or in goal but that was never going to happen and instead of kicking it he decided to pick up the ball when he was out, poor decision making. But it was a great kick by carter, he had a fantastic game

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 9:38 am

  • re: anonymous

LOL apart from the last try which should not have been given and the inept touch judge I thought the ref Mark Lawrence was excellent. One of the best refeering displays so far!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 9:39 am

  • All Black's well deserved it they smashed the wallabies and completely reversed last weeks brain fart. last try was fkn dubious but. love the bledisloe love thwe tri nations but best rugby in the world BY FAR!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 11:30 am

  • 38-10 bloody hell would of never have picked that one should of put a bet on them would of made a few dollars.

Go the AB's you bloody beauties!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 11:40 am

  • For all of you who say that Nonu didn't get the last try take a look at it again and look at the rules. When you look at it from the side/behind view you see that he grounded the ball with his hand, which according to the rules stated here=try! If you say that he lost the ball in the movement, look even closer and you will see he knocked the ball away with his elbow once grinded, courtesy to Lote Tuiqiri jumping into him.

That's all folks, STAND IN BLACK!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 11:52 am

  • The law says "while holding the ball in his hand (or hands) or arm (or arms) brings the ball in contact with the ground," if the ball starts to come out of your hand...you are, by definition, not holding onto it anymore. I am a neutral but that was not a try. If you lose control in the act of grounding, even if "hands or fingers are connecting to the ball which is connecting to the ground" it is not a tru....you have to be HOLDING the ball!!

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:09 pm

  • The words in the law have meaning...."holding" means "holding." Not "the ball has come out of your hands but your hand is touching part of the ball and ball is touching the in goal area."

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:11 pm

  • Thanks god it wasn't a deciding try in the last minute of the world cup final.

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:12 pm

  • Jonathan, who said anything about 'holding'? Read some of the comments above and you'll see what the law actually states.

"places his hand (or hands) or arm (or arms) on it with downward pressure"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 5:15 pm

  • Er Benson it's you who is not reading the comments. I was the poster who posted the law on a try, and here it is for you AGAIN:

    "LAW 12.

Obviously, only (A) applies in his case. Nonu did not do this as the ball was coming out of his grip and so he was not "holding" the ball as required by the law. NO TRY.

I am not debating the game...the ABS deserved to win and played very well.

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:44 pm

  • The (B) section applies when the ball is on the ground already. i.e. it has been chipped through and you follow up the kick to drop on it and score etc.....but that section does not apply

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:46 pm

  • Okay yeah, apologies on that one.

The debate could be about whether having the ball in your hand and getting it into contact with the ground is holding or not though.

In other words, was he not holding it already, then lost control as it hit the ground? I'm just playing devils advocate, trying to see it as the tmo would have seen it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 5:49 pm

  • Benson. It was close certainly. Maybe it's because I am a lawyer and when we read statutes we are told words should be given their natural and ordinary meaning! If it says holding it means holding. I have never seen a try being awarded when the grounder is losing control of the ball in the act of scoring. He lost control at the last moment. Lote did bloody well to get there though.

By Blogger Jonathan, at August 03, 2008 5:54 pm

  • Love the series of 3 big tackles at about 7:10
looks like a shame I don't get tri-nations coverage on my tellybox

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 8:26 pm

  • i think it was just about a try but decisions that close can go either way. i suppose the attacking team should get the benefit?

anyway, nonu should have either finished better by diving earlier or stepping tuqiri, or passed inside to thomson and there would have been no debate.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2008 9:15 pm

  • Much better by the ABs with McCaw back...

Then Nonu's second was big time questionable grounding for one but what is also just as suspect to me is that it was scored in the 83rd minute...???

Not only does the clock stop nowdays when there is injury but I honestly can't remeber any injuries stopping play for that amount of time in the second half and since any time added on must be added on in the same half of the game I think it was shrewd tactics by AB management making sure no hooter went on time?

Henry used his entire bench and made loads of what seemed "pointless" subs in the final 5mins precisely IMO again to make sure the clock was always stopped when the ball was out of play so the subs could be legally made...???

Very fishy IMO and the bonus point was massively needed by the ABs...

By Blogger durrie, at August 03, 2008 10:07 pm

  • They don't just stop the clock after injury time, it stops after a bit of injury time (usually a minute or two), but then only after the ball goes out or it goes dead (or a penalty). They could theoretically keep playing for 20 mins if nobody killed the ball.

By Blogger Unknown, at August 03, 2008 10:35 pm

  • Coming from an Australian perspective I thought the refereeing was quite good. Apart from the obvious last try and the assistant referee was a joke too.

    -Alex

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 04, 2008 1:26 am

  • Nonu's would have surely been awarded a penalty try anyway regardless of the grounding because Tuqiri's tackle was around the neck!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 04, 2008 4:31 am

  • LOL that those three tackles
No way I'd give that "try"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 04, 2008 4:59 am

  • Why, in the second try, the touch was for NZ ? When the aussie pick up the ball, he is already in touch so the touch must have been for Autralia)(like, for example, in the "smart thinking from the 22 kick off" video). Do I Miss something ?
(sorry for my English, I'm French)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 04, 2008 1:43 pm

  • god damn frog!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 05, 2008 12:45 am

  • lucas for that rule to apply the ball must be in the air, and in the game the ball was rolling around on the ground

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 05, 2008 6:54 am

  • im glad for this new six game set up it avoids the typical scenario of new zealand winning all the time i think this is what will show the new zealanders for what they really are, a team that can't handle more than 4 games

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 05, 2008 2:52 pm

  • Classic All Black win! go Al Blacks!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 13, 2008 5:49 am

  • I rekon that last "try" by Nonu, was a proper try for if you look very closly at his finger tips they are still in contact with the ball, even if he lost control.
