Stunning Sale Sharks victory over Clermont

The Sale Sharks put in perhaps the most impressive performance of the Heineken Cup weekend as they produced some fantastic rugby to beat Clermont Auvergne 32-15 on Saturday.

It was a tight game that still could have gone either way with ten minutes left, but a few excellently taken tries proved to be the difference in this entertaining match.

All Black Luke McAllister once again showed what a fantastically all round player he is, with another performance of true quality.

Welshman Dwayne Peel's break in the 20th minute proved to be a turning point in the game as Sale took a 13 point lead from the resultant David Doherty try. Peel picked up a shoulder injury though and looks to be out for some time unfortunately.

Clermont came back, but two Sale tries in the last ten minutes put the game out of reach for the home side.

"It's a great win and one we didn't expect. Clermont is a difficult place to come to and it's a fantastic achievement to pick up a bonus-point win away from home." said coach Kingsley Jones.

It was an impressive victory for Sale, but they can't celebrate for too long as they now need to focus on preparations for their mouth watering meeting with Munster next weekend.

  • What is the general opinion of Rudi Keil amongst European fans? I know that try was handed to him on a platter, but he looks sharp. Maybe the proper Sharks (Natal :P) should bring him back as cover for Steyn in midfield, with the loss of Barritt the other way.

  • Merckz, it's interesting, cos I actually thought Rudi Keil was a thing of the past (maybe he is?). I mean, it seems like ten years ago that he was playing for Natal??

I was shocked to him for Sale. Didn't know he's still around. Good on him though. He was always a gutsy player. Mr Average though if we're honest.

Great win for Sale. Made Clermont look average by the end.

  • Can you get leinster tries?
    very good video

  • Nice one on the highlights boys.

It looks like a good performance, but im not sure how much of it was Sale playing well and how much of it was Clermont being average on the day.

As for Rudi Keil, not really seen that much of him. He's a good squad player who can do what's needed of him when he's called upon, but he isnt first choice in our squad.

I've always had a bit of a "soft spot" for squad players, people never really realise how important they are.

  • Great performance for sharks, first try is great
Seem to be good challengers for the 1st place of the pool
Clermont will have to wake up!

Ps: Chabal is still a devastating dude

  • Damn you for leaving scarlets Dwayne Peel, damn you to hell.

but seriously its a big loss for us but great to see him doing well at Sale that was an awesome break he made in the first try.

  • Clermont without Rougerie( their captain and their best player), Joubert(their best center), Canale, Scelzo(their best prop),Cudmore(their best second row), is clearly not the same team.

  • Clermont were clearly below their average level of last year. I mean you can't possibily expect to win with that kind of defence. I wouldn't write them off yet, though, they might have a late awakening in this H cup, plus they have nothing to lose anymore.
Also, we have got to see some of Chabal's tackles in this game, he was pretty devastating indeed on Vermeulen and Nalaga.

  • absolutely awesome for sale. I myself am a wasps fan, but I am loving the rugby Sale are playing at the moment, and they are really threatening to do damage in not only the Guinness Premiership but the Heineken Cup as well.
Just thinking about it there are so many teams that could win it this year, you've got the English teams like Gloucester, Leicester, Wasps, Sale. Then Toulouse Stade Francais, Clermont,Perpignan might even get in there with the addition of dan carter. and then Munster and Leinster. I can see this being an amazing tournament.

Anyone else think that Luke Mcallister is developing into one of the best centres in the world? bet you NZ are kicking themselves for letting him go!

  • Rory Lamont was key for Sale. He was teh main play maker for two of the tries!!! Got to be odds on for British lions.
Peel also bak to his best, a definant for British Lions.
    Mcaliater was devastating.
    Come on Sale!!

  • That turnover for the third try... that is what we commonly call a "ruck" and player's aren't meant to have hands on the ball :-p

Still, I have to say, Sale are looking great this year, and should have fun against Munster :)

  • chris m: "Luke Mcallister is developing into one of the best centres in the world? bet you NZ are kicking themselves for letting him go!"
McAllister has been one of the best centres in the world for quite a while, and NZ seem to be doing just fine anyway.

  • chris m: "Luke McAllister is developing into one of the best centres in the world? bet you NZ are kicking themselves for letting him go!" While I would reiterate Robert's comments immediately above, I would also rephrase your last line to say "bet you NZ wish they had more money and could offer their players the same life experience and atmosphere that playing rugby in Europe has to offer." The fact is that McAllister left (and this is not a criticism of him) for better money and to experience Europe. NZ did not let him go by choice, but rather sadly watched him go, knowing that he would only get better. Saying that, he will be back for the WC in NZ I believe.

  • The lamonts are looking in fine form this season and should have a great 6 nations cause i have no hope of scotland beating NZ or South africa in the autumn tests. And also where is jason white?, does he still play for sale? great win by sale and great video.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 14, 2008 7:56 am

  • Luke McAllister will be back for NZ when it suits both him, and the AB's - the WC in 2011. He's still very young, so yeah, while they're not missing him right now, he will be a great player for them in the future.

Jason White was injured, and apparently made his comeback last weekend if I'm not mistaken. ? Not 100% sure though.
    But yes, still with Sale.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 14, 2008 10:02 am

  • Up the Sale!

It's our year, watch this space.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 14, 2008 10:43 am

  • "Anyone else think that Luke Mcallister is developing into one of the best centres in the world?"

As if he wasn't one of the best anyway... Based on that performance, he's up there with De Villiers and if I were bolder I'd say outright that he's the best in the World. I hope he (and the whole team, rather) keeps his form for Sunday against Munster.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 14, 2008 9:18 pm

  • Lamont absolutly smashes his way through Nalaga, big collision!

Well as a Sale Sharks season ticket holder, I have the privalidge of seeing him very often, and I think he is an amazing player. He has incredible stength and athleticism, which would make him a first choice centre at most clubs.

Unfortunately, Sale have an abundance of centres, and the likes of Lee Thomas, Luke Mcalister, Matthew Tait, Bell and Tuilagi all going for the same position means he is often left on the bench, which is a great shame since he has raw talent

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 07, 2008 12:49 pm

  • BTW Luke Mcalister seems eager to stay with Sale for at least another season
