Tri Nations 2009 champions tribute - The Springboks
The Springboks take on France tonight in Toulouse in what will be a massive challenge for the number 1 ranked team in the world. They're a side that knows how to win under pressure though, as their record of late shows. A tribute to the winners is a little overdue, so here it is, as a nice preview for tonight's match.
This year, the current World Champions beat the British & Irish Lions, won the IRB World Series Sevens title, won the Tri Nations, and their Bulls won the Super 14. It's fair to say that 2009 has so far been very much the year of the Bok.
Being at the top isn't easy though, as there's only one direction you can go. Despite the Lions coming pretty close to knocking them off the top spot, the Springboks managed to hold them off and went into the Tri Nations on a high.
Some of the Springbok tactics were disagreed with by many, but they got the job done and a number of players stood up when it mattered, cementing their positions in the side.
Tonight in France, the core of that team will take on Les Bleus, hoping to pick up their first win there since 1997, when they beat them 52-10. On the three occasions since then, it's been the home team that's come out trumps.
The Springboks will be without Jean De Villiers and Francois Steyn, who are now playing their rugby abroad, and are also missing Juan Smith and Pierre Spies due to injury.
After the embarrassment with the Dirt Trackers losing to Leicester a week ago, the Springboks will be looking to make things right tonight, as they hope to reproduce some of the form that took them to lifting the Tri Nations trophy only a few months ago.

Fantastic team, hard as nails, who cares how you win. The scoreline is the only thing people will see in years to come. I'm sure not all of their fans a complete arses.
Good luck this evening, if you beat the french that's the last scalp you need to this fantastic year. (You're going to hammer the irish i my opinion)

Great video Thanks a lot for this one. I hope we(French team) will be able to stop this great team it will be a very hard battle at the Toulouse Stadium.
By virilmaiscorrect, at November 13, 2009 2:30 pm
Great video.Boks dont appear to have any major weaknesses and it will take a great performance by the NH teams to beat them.Cant wait for the game tonight I have no idea who will win mainly because the Frech are so unpredictable and inconsistant.
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 2:37 pm
Fantastic video. Some frankly incredible pieces of play in there. Two insane try saving tackles in particular just made me think 'wow'! Aus and NZ were made to look very poor. SA just dominated their weaknesses. It'll be very interesting to see what the French can manage against them. If SA can show anything like this form then they'll get pounded into the ground! Not a team in the world that can stand up to them at the moment. Shame really... if only England had some more dynamic players!
By Rob, at November 13, 2009 2:53 pm
check out 3:38. how was not that a penalty when he actually pulled AB's fullback by the neck
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 2:55 pm

Cool vid. Lets see what they can do in AIs should cap off a perfrect year for the boks.
By Alexander, at November 13, 2009 3:42 pm
Think that video sums it up. The complete package and worthy world champions.... Shame their fans can't be more gracious in victory....
If the French decide to show up tonight it should be a cracking match. Gutted that it doesn't appear to be televised here in the UK unless someone knows otherwise?
By Le Brack, at November 13, 2009 3:44 pm
Nice vid. I hope we live up to the hype.
By Wessel, at November 13, 2009 3:48 pm
The game is on ESPN. If France wants to do something they need to play their game, like against the ABs, and vary their attacks. Not sure about Mermoz/David at the center; very talented but young (23 & 21)
GO ON FRANCE!

'09 Springboks: team of the decade?
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 3:51 pm
They are literally light years ahead of us (England) in terms of strategy, mentality, player ability and pretty much everything. Cept JW maybe.
Maximum respect, although hope the french win tonight.
By Andy, at November 13, 2009 3:52 pm
Agree with Le Brack. Great team, great year. Hypocrisy with Van Der Linde's inclusion considering F Steyn and de Villiers can't be picked.
Don't understand Habana's decision to go to the Stormers though, they aren't in the same league as the Bulls. I know its about fresh challenges, but still.
Here's to France and Ireland wins this weekend. Couldn't care less about Eng, Wales or Scotland. Oh, and also that Italy give the ABs B team a good go however unlikely.
By Huh!! the 3rd, at November 13, 2009 4:03 pm
Le Brack you had me worried for a bit there. The game isnt on the bbc or sky but rte(Irish station) are showing it.
If you really want to see it try Justin Tv.com it might be on there but the quality is never great.

Props on the loose, locks hard as nails, a back row that never stops turning ball over and a no. 8 with the size of a cyclops and the speed of Usain, the best scrum half in the world, a points machine at 10, the masters of offloads and interceptions at the centre, rampaging wingers and a full-back that slots drops from halfway. Anybody thinks the Boks ain't the best in the world?
By Joost, at November 13, 2009 4:20 pm
^^ unfortunately their fans act like this.
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 4:22 pm
I'm a bit afraid for tonight actually, I think it's gonna be a locked game, France will try and play the same way the boks do, but they're definitely not going to win that way, and I think it will be quite a boring game.
Actually I've been out of the rugby world for some months due to med school and haven't been able to follow the top14, but from what I heard we (the french) are not top level at the moment... I don't think we can stand a chance against the boks.
By Ben, at November 13, 2009 4:29 pm
The Boks sucssess has been - A massively physical pack alinged to clever tactical kicking. Its what England did to win the world cup in 2003.
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 4:30 pm
The Boks are undoubtedly the best in the world right now but I reckon there'll be quite a few people round the world who bridle at them being 'best of the decade' as suggested above.
Such things are of course very subjective and there will never be a definitive answer but still, a controversial view for those of us on here who aren't Saffers.

I must say Habanas defence is almost as good as his attack now - brilliant stuff from the boks!
As a neutral I really cannot wait for the match btw the boks and france tonight, going to be a good one!
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 6:21 pm

What do they feed those kids in south african, or is it something in the water over there? Cannot believe the size diffs btw the boks and oz ( and before anyone says it - I know oz are a young team, but come on FSteyn aint that old!) It's just scary...
good luck to all the NH teams this weekend!!
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 6:59 pm
To have clips like this when playing against the 2nd and 3rd best teams in the world is just amazing.. wish my team (scotland)would take note. Well done boks for a great year, you are deserved world champs!

France just dominated the Boks tonight.
By Coco, at November 13, 2009 10:48 pm
France dominated the Boks it was a great game especially the last 20 mins.ALLEZ LES BLEUS!
That performance has given me hope of Ireland beating the Boks although they wont be able to win in the way France did.
By Anonymous, at November 13, 2009 10:49 pm
Oh My God !
I'm so proud of the French team right now, what a game ! The 1st half was not bad, the 2nd was amazing, and the 3rd for me promises to be perfect (if I ever remember it lol)

By France20Boks13, at November 13, 2009 11:26 pm
BOOOOOOOOOOM!!! We kicked some bokkes ass!
My pleasure is even greater regarding all the shitty comments coming from the saffas before that match... We ate you at the scrum, we ate you at the breakdown, we ate you in the toughness! What excuse will you find now??
Sorry for the anthem though, i reckon that was a shame...
By rodofle, at November 13, 2009 11:57 pm
No excuses you northern moffockas!!
We were outplayed and outmuscled on the night. Scrums, lineouts, kicking, enthusiasm... err ref. haha Just kidding. Well done France and lets stop dissing each other here shall we? NH teams starting to look strong again. Can only be a good thing. Ireland is going to be tough. Wont be surprised if they take Oz tomorrow too. Gonna be a bad weekend for the South.
By Jacques, at November 14, 2009 12:07 am
France deserved to win. As a Bok fan I was very impressed with the frogs. No excuses we got stuffed from the get go!!
Need to lose Adi Jacobs fast !!!

I mean whats this thing NH vs SH??? I don't feel "North Hemispharian"?!!
By rodofle, at November 14, 2009 2:28 am
One of the all-time great teams (coming from a Scot). I have spent plenty of time with Saffers in my sailing and rugby careers, and have nothing but respect for their attitude: winning isn't the biggest thing, it's the only thing.
Unfortunately, this attitude can lead to unfortunate incidents and, when misinterpreted, can be seen as arrogance and rudeness, but this team has every right to be arrogant.
If every team in world rugby were as passionate as the Saffers, we would show the nancyballers what a real sport has to offer.
Tot siens, Boikies.
By HN, at November 14, 2009 2:28 am
first part against AB has the best music i've ever heard! where can i get it?
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 2:59 am
South Africa are without a doubt the team of the decade... it had nothing to do with France beating them... it was the national anthems that lost them the game!!
NOT! Haha, didn't see the game myself, but good to hear South Africa have been given a reality check by France. Thats what they're there for IMO, whenever an amazing team seems totally unstoppable and at the top of their game, the French come out of nowhere and beat them.
The South Africans are blaming it on the national anthems though, what a joke... it happens every now and then, I wouldn't go so far as to call it "disrespecting" the nation, I would just call the singer a complete dumb arse and get on with it.
By Loony, at November 14, 2009 3:50 am
Incredible team, one of the greatest assembled. Awesome forward pack, Jacques Fourie so underrated best he's absolute class
By jeffrey, at November 14, 2009 4:18 am
RESPECT TO HN !!! couldnt of said it better myself mate.
Boks play hard and play to win. We got bashed today but great to see a team like france taking it to us up front. About time some of the other NH teams learn from them.
Come to our back yard and if you win then you will get respect like the french did in new zealand.
By LOVE THIS GAME, at November 14, 2009 4:51 am
"Full strength SA side too, what excuses will they use, bad ball, poor ref, wrong kind of stadium, not eaten the right food?"
Not a full strength side, we were missing four key players. Awful performance, reminded me of the Wales and Scotland games last year
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 6:07 am
Big Bird was the ref, he was the ref in Brisbane as well. Coincidence? I don't think so.
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 6:10 am
I thought SA rid themselves of that Van Da Linde slug? "Kanko" was quite the embarrassment too.
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 6:12 am
Great vid for a great team!
Re- the French's victory, they were simply better on that game. Period. Please no excuses such as a few "key" players out or in the bin, the ref, the anthem or the colours of the Pope's underwear. Kudos to the Boks fans here who are fair-play and slap on the wrist for a few of the last anons....
Great team that was beaten by a better team. Well done the French and good luck to the Boks for the rest of the tour.
By Nico, at November 14, 2009 7:42 am

slow down slow down, we just beated butcher boks, we didn't get the world cup...Just a good french lesson to the boks again (we love locks bleeding meat here). And what can we expect: many britton warming us, when they hate us so much usually... If we beat the Blacks in Marseille, then we shall sing high and loud...
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 8:57 am
and remember, thou english in NH and english seeds overseas, there is no NH/SH rivalry, there's only all the referees from all the english speaking countries against France. AHAHAHA (well, i'm only kiding, but...)
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 9:00 am
As a Bok supporter, well done to France last night. An kak game from a Bok perspective, but we were definitely the 2nd team on the night. The naional anthem was least of our problems.
One comment - given the general criticism of SA supporters and how "ungracious the saffas are in victory", some of the comments by the French supporters above might keep things a little in perspective. As South African supporters we see it as part of the game - but clearly there are users of this site of a more sensitive nature.
Looking forward to Croke Park...
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 11:03 am
Bloody French. How are we supposed to live up to that sort of performance when SA come to Dublin? No i'm joking, I thought it was a magnificent game of rugby, and the French team and their supporters should be proud.
By the way, did anyone see Dusatoir and two other French players going absolutely crazy during the match? They won a penalty at a scrum, and Dusatoir started pushing some guy really violently, and I was thinking 'You idiot, don't get the penalty reversed'. Then I realised that the guy he was practically fighting was his own team mate.
By Kearney for tests, at November 14, 2009 12:14 pm
Great game.
High on errors.
High on penalties.
But that doesn't matter when teams give it everything. And France could've won by way more had they not missed 5 kicks and screwed up all their chances in the 22.
Worried about SA backlash in Croker though.
By Huh!! the 3rd, at November 14, 2009 1:25 pm
Well played Frenchies. As a South African, I was very impressed with their enthusiasm, energy and commitment.
Could be the beginning of a new era for French rugby. This side is very strong and improving at the right time for the World Cup.
The Boks are tired. They need to rest. But that was our first side and France beat them. Excellent stuff for them.
By Robert, at November 14, 2009 4:06 pm
"Please no excuses such as a few "key" players out or in the bin,"
it was a correction, not an excuse.
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 5:03 pm
haha Italians embarrassing the all blacks scrum was hilarious. if it wasn't for the convict with the blow dried hair, Italians could have won. I had to laugh when DickinSon would penalize the italians during a rolling maul.
By Izzz, at November 14, 2009 5:10 pm
people thought that was an excellent game? no that was a perfect example of low grade rugby.
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 5:16 pm
France have always been fantastic runners but a few things to point out; they need a proper goal kicker, 10-12-13 need to stop forcing the off-load in the 22 (that is what causes knock ons), South Africa need to come up with a new game plan as their kick and chase plan didn't work, South Africa needs to learn how to tackle, never not play Brussow that kid is a flippin' work demon!!
By Les Bleus, at November 14, 2009 5:24 pm
ah jesus christ give the NH SH crap a rest i hate it when SH fans do it to us so just be gratious in wining a world class side like south africa but the french front row were great the were playing like backs but iit was a good game a few little potential mill ups but no punches thrown the wanker of the match goes to the rastas for desroyin 1 of my favourite anthems greatings from the emerald isle cant wait to play australia and south africa in croker
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 5:45 pm
French dominated the game with ease...Barcella ate up any bok in front of him..There is clearly a different perception of the breakdown in the SH. This needs to be cleared up.....IRB should just brief refs from both NH/SH as to how they want it ruled and sort this mess out once and for all.

Jesus christ its nice to throw insults at each other from behind a computer screen. This was a great game of rugby with several stand out performers on both sides. France were deserved victors and SA didn't have their best game but give the fucking insults a rest for once. Soccer mentality and derogatory remarks should stay where it belong.

Well done France - you TOTALLY outplayed us in from 1 to 15,no excuses - we were as pathetic as the our anthem on the night - man I hate it when the boks lose but I think it was time for us to lose in order to sort out the best 15 for the job!
kanko was pathetic, talk about not taking your chance - he won't get another go ( spies or no spies - kanko has to go!!!) And I use to be his biggest fan, seems he cannot take his excellent provincial/S14 form into international rugger. BUT BOY FRANCE WERE HUNGRIER!!
SORT IT OUT BOKS, ESP THE SCRUM!!!
By Anonymous, at November 14, 2009 10:06 pm
Well played France, you certainly did your homework on us and us boks had no answers! I was upset with the loss, but I would have been MORE upset if we had played that s$%6 and won.
Hope we can sort things out before the game against ( my 2nd fav team) the irish! Please get someone who can sing our anthem, is all I ask!

Well played France! What annoyed me the most was the fact that we (SA) didn't change tactics when we saw that our game plan wasn't working, with all those test caps in the side you would have thought SOMEONE would have changed tactics??? Boy, did we miss FSteyns boot, especially in that wind??!!! Taking NOTHING away from the French they were bril - RESPECT!

By Haooy Boy, at November 14, 2009 11:27 pm
^ and only 1 upset out of all those results. Maybe we should get Zimbabwe playing the USA, and you'd count that as a NH win too, bragging about it?
Don't get too excited btw, it clearly makes you type badly and get teams mixed up ;)
