Andy Goode's yellow card on Super 14 debut

Former England international Andy Goode had his services called upon by the Sharks recently for their away leg of the Super 14. Goode is on loan with the Durban based side and made his debut against the Crusaders in Christchurch on Friday.

Goode left Brive in the Top 14 after three years living in France. He will make the move back to England to play for Worcester in the Guinness Premiership, but answered the Sharks' call when they had flyhalf troubles ahead of their tour.

Argentinian import Juan Martin Hernandez is back home as he picked up a bad injury, and
Steve Meyer, who flew in from Perpignan, retired mysteriously a few days before the first match.

"In my wildest dream, I never imagined taking part in a Super 14 match in Christchurch," Goode said. "What an amazing opportunity for a northern hemisphere player.

"Just before I left to come here, my good mate Geordan Murphy, the Ireland fullback said he would give his right arm to play in this competition and here I am," he added.

Goode may only travel with the side as he apparently has visa issues, and even if he gets that sorted out, it will be interesting to see if he slots into life in the high tempo Super 14.

"I am absolutely gobsmacked that the Sharks have bought him,’ former Springbok and Leicester flyhalf Joel Stransky said of the signing.

"I’ve played with Andy and coached him at Leicester. He’s a good guy, and was a good club player in England at a point in his career, but he’s no better than any young talent in the country.

"With all due respect to Rudolf Straeuli and John Plumtree, the move smacks of desperation. If Andy struggled in France and never set the world alight in England, the pace of Super 14 rugby will be too much for him. I think he’ll struggle and will find it difficult to adapt to the intensity of Super Rugby," he added.

With Ruan Pienaar available as first choice number 10, it's likely that Goode will play off the bench, as he did on the weekend for his debut. He came on in the sixty third minute, missed one tackle and made a few decent passes, then in the seventy third he high tackled Dan Carter and was yellow carded.

It wasn't a great debut by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm sure there's a whole lot of you that are interested to see how he progresses, so we'll do our best on here to keep you informed.

Should the Sharks have gone for homegrown talent rather, or could this move bring the best out of a flyhalf who has played 17 times for his country?

    but mediocre player

  • If the Sharks are winning they'll bring him on in the last 20 to kick to the corners and slot goals, thats about it.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at March 02, 2010 3:06 pm

  • As a Tigers fan, I have a bit of a soft spot for Goode. He was a very good player for us. Won us a lot games.

Has made 1 or 2 of these tackles in his career before though... Not his finest hour on debut.

  • Wow the Super 14 is really peaking now, calling on Andy Goode lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2010 3:37 pm

  • Very Similar to one he did on O'Driscoll a few years ago. Isit really that big a deal that he's gone down to S14 ?

He's an alright player who does mix the sublime with the ridiculous.

If the Shraks are in need and he was looking for something a bit different then why not ? Was there any young lads coming through that the Sharks could really rely on ?

This is gonna start up some serious NH v SH crap

  • It's almost as though RD is baiting us to get stuck into a NH/SH tussle with this vid!

By the way I've figured out a much less contentious hemisphere statement: Western hemisphere is definitely worse overall than Eastern hemisphere. Surely nobody would disagree?

  • 'By the way I've figured out a much less contentious hemisphere statement: Western hemisphere is definitely worse overall than Eastern hemisphere. Surely nobody would disagree?'

depends what you mean by west......west as in america then yes i agree.....east as in iraq and arab states, china, russia etc....then no i disagree....

  • Any tackle on DC should automatically result in a yellow card as standard, if anything purely for a lack of respect for the guy!

how can you have east and west hemispheres when the world is round! anywhere can be east or west depending on where you say the middle point is u goon!!

I honestly laughed ut loud when i read he was going to SA.

Can't believe worcester have signed him as well..
    terrible player.

    By Anonymous goodNumber10, at March 02, 2010 6:08 pm

  • Joshie, my thinking was that the Greenwich meridian is the dividing line for world time, so this would be the boundary for east and west. You have hurt my feelings by calling me a goon.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2010 7:27 pm

  • ...and take those stupid gloves off!

By Anonymous Chris Boy, at March 02, 2010 8:39 pm

  • Everyone should leave Andy in peace. You all get so excited when one of the 'fat lad' props scores a try, so have a bit of respect when one of them lands a no.10 role with a top team.

Also, mixed in among his fitness problems and Asterix hair-style, he does think outside the box and absent-mindedly create some good tries, probably because he's still getting to grips with the rules/aims of the sport.

By Anonymous Mrs Goode, at March 02, 2010 8:50 pm

  • Dear Sharks supporters,

Stick with Goode forthe season and you're back line will be slow and unimaginative, he'll make a few more of these tackles and get caught with a few other cheap shots, oh and he'll kick to the corner all afternoon.

    Basically you've got a lemon.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 02, 2010 11:22 pm

  • Goode is a kicking outhalf. As long as Sharks knew that (how could they not??) when they signed him, everything should be ok. But god help them if they thought he would get the back line moving...

By Blogger Unknown, at March 02, 2010 11:46 pm

  • I just watched this video of him..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEvGmgBPGxE

He actually makes some quality touches.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at March 03, 2010 12:13 am

  • Lol Inside Shoulder -

That looks like a hightlights video put together by his management company, probably the one that got him the Sharks gig. Sure, a few nice touches...but can you imagine a hightlights video made for Dan Carter or BOD? It would have more than a few nice touches!

By Anonymous Adam, at March 03, 2010 12:23 am

  • Ha I just realised, the match is really close when Goode comes on, then 9 minutes later the Crusaders have scored 10 points and the game's effectively over. A class act.

By Anonymous Kearney for tests, at March 03, 2010 12:51 am

  • Adam - Of course because they are infinitely better players.

Just saying that he's not a complete waste of space like some people are trying to make out and he does offer a little more than simply kicking.

Do wish he'd take off those gloves though, doesnt he know that they make absolutely no difference other than making him look retarded.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at March 03, 2010 12:55 am

  • Its all about the Gloves and the hair, how can you play rugby when you look like a washed up pornstar?

  • fuuuuuuuck, get the british out of my tournament, they don't know how to play

By Anonymous Down Unda, at March 03, 2010 10:31 am

  • I completely agree with Alexander. I don't know the stats but given the coverage Rugbydump has in the world of rugby, I think it's highly likely that the guy visits this page and it's riddled with comments about him that have nothing to do with rugby and more to do with misplaced expectations about fashion and physical appearance that would be better suited to a gossip mag for teenage girls.

I'm no Leicester fan and don't go out of my way to watch Andy Goode play rugby but 1) good on him; he's playing for the Natal Sharks and 2) he was at the helm of a Leicester side that steamrolled over just about any opponent in Europe for nearly a decade.

IMO, the Sharks should probably have gone local but in that they didn't and constructive criticism seems out of the question here, can't we just revert to being respectful about the people who play our sport at the highest level?

By Blogger Disco, at March 03, 2010 1:01 pm

  • Great post Disco. Sadly the more anonymous one is, the more likely one is to make offensive comments about others, especially if it seems to impress others, e.g. the school bully syndrome.

Number 6 - do you really have a problem with Goode because he isn't pretty enough for you? Do you realise how sad that is?! Is this professional rugby or the X factor? So what if he wants to have long hair, wear gloves etc. He's blatantly a better athlete than all of us, so who are we to bitch so hard?

Good luck to him, and if he or his family/friends do read this blog or others like it, please ignore the ignorant ramblings of a few jealous contributors, they are not representative of mass opinion.

  • "So how do we decide where the NH and the SH divide?"

I don't know, maybe there's something with the sun and this uninteresting thing called the equator?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2010 1:36 pm

  • The line demarcating the eastern and western hemispheres is an arbitrary convention, unlike the equator (an imaginary line encircling the Earth, equidistant from its poles) which divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

ie. there is an eastern and western hemisphere just as there is a northern and southern hemisphere it's just that observing its existence is only really of any use when comparing the respective rugby playing abilities of Murray Mexted and Dan Lyle.

before trying to mock someone for appearing clever, you might want to look at your own life....i assume you mock people who are smarter than you and call them 'posh' etc, when really, with your level of spelling, i deduce that you are either some small minded little child that needs to watch his language, or some overgrown chimp who cant get off his knees in the mens room!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2010 4:37 pm

  • Cleverdickdisco -- you're a small-minded moron. I hope you run into Gareth Thomas on a dark night. As for Andy Foode, he has achieved a fair amount, justifiably or not, but the Sharks couldn't possibly have picked a played who would better fuel the "boring England/Home Nations/northern hemisphere" line... At least he'll be at home in the Super 14 when it comes to crap defence and optional tackling...

By Anonymous tonydanza, at March 03, 2010 7:44 pm

  • "Goode did some good things in this game too, you've just highlighted the poor things for some reason."

Nope, he was on for exactly 10 minutes, made a kickoff, about 4 passes, (decent enough hands of course), a big missed tackle, and then this high shot.

In 10 minutes, the bad pretty much outweighed, yes you guessed it, the Goode.

  • Dont know why a Super 14 teams needs to bring in players from outside Oz, SA and NZ.

I heard the new Rebels team has already signed Danny Cipriani... there aren't Rugby players in Oz anymore?

By Anonymous Nobel, at March 04, 2010 4:38 am

  • Nobel, we live in a global age! Are you aware of how common it is in football (soccer) leagues to recruit a range of talent from around the world these days?
It seems pretty small minded to suggest that all 'domestic' leagues should only feature domestic players.

By Anonymous Phil, at March 04, 2010 1:44 pm

  • On the whole, how many northern players did well in the S14?
I remember Califano (Blues?), Michalak (Sharks) and Hernandez (Sharks). There must be many others of course. They played in S14 but perhaps they didn't do much more than Goode...

By Anonymous Maximus, at March 04, 2010 2:42 pm

  • Decent player in my opinion. Can't really understand some of the pundit comments. Moments of brilliance for Tigers and Brieve in his day. Don't think he hs earnt a place in super 14 team, but he has experience, you can't deny that.

    Nobel said...

Hate bringing this up and stopping to this level but maybe because not all the best players in the world exist within the southern hemisphere.

    By Blogger cp85, at March 04, 2010 2:43 pm

  • Also think its very unfair to say that defence is 'optional' in super 14: Saw the Crusaders play last week and their defence was very resolute!!!

By Blogger Alexander, at March 05, 2010 2:23 am

  • There are many talented players in Europe. I would argue that a negative philosophy towards attacking rugby, and not even focus on skills training is really all that separates NH players from SH players at the moment.
There is plenty of natural talent available in Europe, it just needs to be nurtured better.
Cipriani has plenty of potential, he just needs the right development, and Rod Macqueen is one of the greatest coaches in rugby history, so if anyone can make Cipriani a better player, he can.
In terms of talent, Australia doesn't have the depth of NZ or SA and has a couple hundred players playing overseas professionally. They need to strengthen Melbourne's depth somehow, so signing a couple of decent foreign players isn't a bad idea.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 05, 2010 11:25 am

  • I dunno why the whole of European Rugby needs to bring in players from all over the world?is there nomore rugby players in Europe?

    Get over it people

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 05, 2010 4:16 pm

  • Honestly, he's one of the world's best position kickers, he sure knows how to flick the ball and set up tries. But he's got soft tackling, weak passing, overweight and he is slooow. He's going to go home with the tail between his legs.

By Anonymous Juggernauter, at March 06, 2010 4:57 pm

  • He went ok against the Waratahs the other night. Not great but ok, didn't disgrace himself again.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 07, 2010 11:01 am

  • "He went ok against the Waratahs the other night. Not great but ok, didn't disgrace himself again."

Except the bit were he picked up another yellow and 10 in the bin. Were you watching the same game?

Goode has a sweet boot, but has always been a bit chubby and slow, so never going to be southern hemisphere running pedigree. That said I am loving the fact that he is there. Maybe it is the satire, but I think we should celebrate the Aussie commentator and the comb over comment. Priceless.

Disco, I agree with many of your comments, but spare us your copy and pasted t'interweb Physics lecture. Remember, it is all relative.
