Andy Goode's yellow card on Super 14 debut

Former England international Andy Goode had his services called upon by the Sharks recently for their away leg of the Super 14. Goode is on loan with the Durban based side and made his debut against the Crusaders in Christchurch on Friday.

Goode left Brive in the Top 14 after three years living in France. He will make the move back to England to play for Worcester in the Guinness Premiership, but answered the Sharks' call when they had flyhalf troubles ahead of their tour.

Argentinian import Juan Martin Hernandez is back home as he picked up a bad injury, and
Steve Meyer, who flew in from Perpignan, retired mysteriously a few days before the first match.

"In my wildest dream, I never imagined taking part in a Super 14 match in Christchurch," Goode said. "What an amazing opportunity for a northern hemisphere player.

"Just before I left to come here, my good mate Geordan Murphy, the Ireland fullback said he would give his right arm to play in this competition and here I am," he added.

Goode may only travel with the side as he apparently has visa issues, and even if he gets that sorted out, it will be interesting to see if he slots into life in the high tempo Super 14.

"I am absolutely gobsmacked that the Sharks have bought him,’ former Springbok and Leicester flyhalf Joel Stransky said of the signing.

"I’ve played with Andy and coached him at Leicester. He’s a good guy, and was a good club player in England at a point in his career, but he’s no better than any young talent in the country.

"With all due respect to Rudolf Straeuli and John Plumtree, the move smacks of desperation. If Andy struggled in France and never set the world alight in England, the pace of Super 14 rugby will be too much for him. I think he’ll struggle and will find it difficult to adapt to the intensity of Super Rugby," he added.

With Ruan Pienaar available as first choice number 10, it's likely that Goode will play off the bench, as he did on the weekend for his debut. He came on in the sixty third minute, missed one tackle and made a few decent passes, then in the seventy third he high tackled Dan Carter and was yellow carded.

It wasn't a great debut by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm sure there's a whole lot of you that are interested to see how he progresses, so we'll do our best on here to keep you informed.

Should the Sharks have gone for homegrown talent rather, or could this move bring the best out of a flyhalf who has played 17 times for his country?

As a Tigers fan, I have a bit of a soft spot for Goode. He was a very good player for us. Won us a lot games.

Has made 1 or 2 of these tackles in his career before though... Not his finest hour on debut.

Very Similar to one he did on O'Driscoll a few years ago. Isit really that big a deal that he's gone down to S14 ?

He's an alright player who does mix the sublime with the ridiculous.

If the Shraks are in need and he was looking for something a bit different then why not ? Was there any young lads coming through that the Sharks could really rely on ?

Everyone should leave Andy in peace. You all get so excited when one of the 'fat lad' props scores a try, so have a bit of respect when one of them lands a no.10 role with a top team.

Also, mixed in among his fitness problems and Asterix hair-style, he does think outside the box and absent-mindedly create some good tries, probably because he's still getting to grips with the rules/aims of the sport.

I completely agree with Alexander. I don't know the stats but given the coverage Rugbydump has in the world of rugby, I think it's highly likely that the guy visits this page and it's riddled with comments about him that have nothing to do with rugby and more to do with misplaced expectations about fashion and physical appearance that would be better suited to a gossip mag for teenage girls.

I'm no Leicester fan and don't go out of my way to watch Andy Goode play rugby but 1) good on him; he's playing for the Natal Sharks and 2) he was at the helm of a Leicester side that steamrolled over just about any opponent in Europe for nearly a decade.

IMO, the Sharks should probably have gone local but in that they didn't and constructive criticism seems out of the question here, can't we just revert to being respectful about the people who play our sport at the highest level?

Great post Disco. Sadly the more anonymous one is, the more likely one is to make offensive comments about others, especially if it seems to impress others, e.g. the school bully syndrome.

Number 6 - do you really have a problem with Goode because he isn't pretty enough for you? Do you realise how sad that is?! Is this professional rugby or the X factor? So what if he wants to have long hair, wear gloves etc. He's blatantly a better athlete than all of us, so who are we to bitch so hard?

The line demarcating the eastern and western hemispheres is an arbitrary convention, unlike the equator (an imaginary line encircling the Earth, equidistant from its poles) which divides the northern and southern hemispheres.

ie. there is an eastern and western hemisphere just as there is a northern and southern hemisphere it's just that observing its existence is only really of any use when comparing the respective rugby playing abilities of Murray Mexted and Dan Lyle.

Nope, he was on for exactly 10 minutes, made a kickoff, about 4 passes, (decent enough hands of course), a big missed tackle, and then this high shot.

In 10 minutes, the bad pretty much outweighed, yes you guessed it, the Goode.

I remember Califano (Blues?), Michalak (Sharks) and Hernandez (Sharks). There must be many others of course. They played in S14 but perhaps they didn't do much more than Goode...

Decent player in my opinion. Can't really understand some of the pundit comments. Moments of brilliance for Tigers and Brieve in his day. Don't think he hs earnt a place in super 14 team, but he has experience, you can't deny that.

There are many talented players in Europe. I would argue that a negative philosophy towards attacking rugby, and not even focus on skills training is really all that separates NH players from SH players at the moment.
There is plenty of natural talent available in Europe, it just needs to be nurtured better.
Cipriani has plenty of potential, he just needs the right development, and Rod Macqueen is one of the greatest coaches in rugby history, so if anyone can make Cipriani a better player, he can.
In terms of talent, Australia doesn't have the depth of NZ or SA and has a couple hundred players playing overseas professionally. They need to strengthen Melbourne's depth somehow, so signing a couple of decent foreign players isn't a bad idea.

Honestly, he's one of the world's best position kickers, he sure knows how to flick the ball and set up tries. But he's got soft tackling, weak passing, overweight and he is slooow. He's going to go home with the tail between his legs.

Goode has a sweet boot, but has always been a bit chubby and slow, so never going to be southern hemisphere running pedigree. That said I am loving the fact that he is there. Maybe it is the satire, but I think we should celebrate the Aussie commentator and the comb over comment. Priceless.
