Ben Foden charge floors big Ally Kellock

Ben Foden looks set to make his first Test start when England take on France this weekend in the Grand Slam decider of the Six Nations. Foden had a cracking game when coming on as sub against Scotland on Saturday, just ask Alastair Kellock.

The dynamic young fullback came on as a replacement and looked dangerous with ball in hand more often than not, something that England have lacked in recent times. With Delon Armitage having been released to his club, Foden will no doubt start against France.

Foden showed that he not only has the running and creative game, but packs a punch as he left quite an impression on 6ft9 Scotland lock Kellock.

"I won't forget my introduction to England substitute full-back Ben Foden in a hurry as we collided with such an impact during the second half my back molars rattled.

"It was an elbow to the voice box, or was it his head? No matter, on came our brilliant doc James Robson to secure my neck. Doing my best Barry White impression I managed to assure him I was OK but understandably he was taking no risks after events of recent weeks," he said in his column, in reference to the recent Thom Evans injury.

Foden knocked him to the floor with incredible force, leaving him strewn on the turf for a few minutes while play went on. In a rather comical piece of sporting theatre, Kellock suddenly got up when needed, and played on.

"A request by a medic to secure an oxygen mask to my face was brushed aside and, lo and behold, as I got to my feet didn't the ball just come my way?

"I didn't think twice before grabbing it and heading for a gap in the England defence to roars of laughter from the crowd, a rare moment of comedy in a bruising battle of a game," he added.

  • Booom. I loved the slow motion Rocky like special effect of the gumguard flying out. Foden will carve up France hopefully. Long overdue.

  • Was waiting for this to come up, well done RD!
The England pack could learn something from Foden here, that was a beauty of a hit.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 17, 2010 2:05 pm

  • Absolutely loved that by Foden. 100% desire to give everything for a chance to play for England - if only we had a few more like him.

If Ben Foden doesnt start against France then Martin Johnson should be shot.

By Anonymous The Inside Shoulder, at March 17, 2010 2:05 pm

  • It probably wasn't a good decision for Foden to attempt a kamikaze run against 5 people and hence the turn over that followed. Still any running by England was better than anything in that game.
The funny part was Kellock just got up and caught the kick. I was like "WTF??!!!?

By Blogger vinniechan, at March 17, 2010 2:08 pm

  • BTW, I totally second that the England pack should take note of that run.

  • Nah Ashton (19 tries in 25 games, compared to Cueto's none :P) and Flood are in form at the moment. Northampton will be annoyed: Foden and Ashton are pretty much the heart of their attacking force. At least they've got Lawes back I guess (Deacon is having an affair with MJ maybe? :P)

  • England has the largest player pool in the world. Why do the players look so average? I'm not blaming MJ, I don't think he has any horses in the stable. That 2003 team had 8 or so world class players that were arguably the best in their position in the world. There aren't too many guys wearing white jerseys like that now. Why hasn't England produced world class players in the past 6 years?

So Hartley is free for playing a 6 nations match after eye gouging Ford??? This eye-gouge is at lesat as bad than Attoub's one, and Hartley is a recidivist like Attoub. No need for everything else : a 70 weeks ban, like Attoub, it's the punishment now.

What??? Hartley has not been cited? If I was Attoub, who can't play until the beginning of the 11/12 season, I would call that a fucking injustice.

  • ^^^ and it is!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 17, 2010 3:41 pm

  • Yeh as much as the hit was huge it didnt amount for much for england....they lost the ball :-/

But, if they can ensure the safety of the ball then these charges will be great against france....

big points to Kellock for getting up and catching the ball...then geting right back into the thick of it!!!

    By Anonymous No.7, at March 17, 2010 3:42 pm

  • Huge bans are only made for the french. Now that's very clear, who can deny it? Call us paranoids! If Hartley gets cited it would be justice, if he's not thats a fukin disgrace. And he's not been cited, so we can deduce that IRB is clearly not fair and i assume anti-french. There's no other explanation.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 17, 2010 3:52 pm

  • I'm french and I absolutely don't matter of this pseudo conspiracy, I just want justice, and in this case, there is no justice. Dupuy has not played the 6N this year, I wonder why Hartley can play the crunch on saturday? Why the players have not the same treatment?

By Anonymous 3/4 centre, at March 17, 2010 4:01 pm

  • Strong run there all should take note in the packs, if a fullback can do it, big boys too! Gooood man for catching that ball soon as he got up. That's tough!!!

  • I know france by far deserve the grand slam, but for some weird reason i really want to english to pull off an upset!

    ............

Who am i kidding, i'm just sore we were so bloody terrible when we played the French! haha

    (from Wales) :P

By Anonymous David, at March 17, 2010 4:10 pm

  • Wow, he didn't fumble that catch - impressive, thumbs up! :D

By Anonymous JLH, at March 17, 2010 4:18 pm

  • From what I can see, and I'm not bashing England, Nick Easter, Lewis Moody and Joe Worsely are competent backrow forwards, they may stand out in the Premiership, but by international standards, are not up to much. So much of the game depends on a mobile, smart, skillful backrow to link the forwards and backs. They must possess an all round game, not just, he's a good tackler, while he's mobile, and he's strong on his feet. I fell the same way about Flutely, stand out in prem, but by no means world class. Whatever happened to playing 2nd phase off Tindalls crash and releasing the speedsters. Simple rugby was proven to work by England in Oz.

Having sad all that, I would love to see England turn the French over, it's very possible, but unlikely.

Ahahaha! such a funny joke! In order to punish the french football, the bans are different for the french rugbymen!.. Please don't associate our rugby team with the football and what is done in this sport. I'm very sorry for you if you're an irish football fan.

Flutey is a world class player as proved in the last 6 nations and on the lions tour. Unfortunately he's been injured most of this season and hasnt hit the heights of last season.

Players trying to prevent the offload are really getting smashed these days, as hip height tackles aren't 100% effective anymore.

  • Look you moronic french prats (Non applicable to the reasonable ones!)! http://www.nowrugby.com/mb/showthread.php?t=63486

Check that out picture, look at where hartley's head is in that picture, ross has him head down and round the head and hartleys hands are on fords face....ok you can argue reckless gouging or something, but sticking your finger in a guys eye whilst he is lying on his back on the ground is a little different to grabbing someones face who is trying to take your head off!

By Anonymous SICK OF FRENCH BULLSH*T!, at March 17, 2010 10:49 pm

  • ^^^^ It's still a gouge by an English player on a Scot player. 70 weeks ban.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 17, 2010 11:07 pm

  • That was cool but to be honest .. what was he thinking? 9 out of 10 times he would have been absolutely destroyed if he had tried that. Luckily Al Kellock underestimated him and paid the price with a shoulder in the throat.

By Anonymous Dr, at March 17, 2010 11:11 pm

  • Mass times speed equals momentum. A guy of ten stone can stop a guy of 20 stone dead if he meets him at twice the speed.

Neatly demonstrated here - the smaller guy was running forward, the lock was standing there, and got flattened.

By Anonymous Mike, at March 17, 2010 11:23 pm

  • Please paranoid French guys - this is not the same. He maybe should have been cited, but even if he was that would be a short ban, maximum 8-10 weeks I would guess.

Please - before you comment - check and learn that there are different degrees of gouging, and different levels of punishement. It is not always the same. You make yourself look foolish with these paranoid comments.

By Anonymous Mike, at March 17, 2010 11:46 pm

  • 'It's still a gouge by an English player on a Scot player. 70 weeks ban'

Oh right, so gouges are worth 70 weeks? ah, well lets get dupuy back in here then cos he still has another 47 weeks to go....

not to mention those medical staff, you know the ones that put contact lenses back in, 'Eye contact' lets have them banned!

Oh yeh, and which match was it where a player got caught in the eye by a hand off?!? i cant remember it happened last weekend, but surely the attacking player who commited the hand off should be banned, thats another 70 weeks!

    YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!

im sorry, but there is no way in hell that is worthy of any where near 70weeks.

Ferris gouged twice in the same match, and the 70 week ban was for a gouge when ferris was on the ground...

This is handbags they are going at each other and hartley is pushing him away....

GEEEZ im not even an england supporter!!!!

there you go french fans....70 weeks for that aswell?

    By Anonymous No.7, at March 18, 2010 12:21 am

  • A gouge is a gouge, but it may not have been intentional.
    That is important.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 12:50 am

  • That's not a gouge, no. 7.

I'm not French, and I called their paranoia over the Dupuy and Attoub ban bullshit (though there is no way Attoub deserved 70 weeks from that photo...so Ferris' testimony must've been pretty damning), but if I were David Attoub, I would look at the Dylan Hartley incident and feel like I was pretty fucking hard done by.

Hartley's finger is clearly IN Ford's eye socket, just as Attoub's is. Looking at the two photos, you can't convince me that there's any real difference in severity. The fact that it happened to Ferris twice in one match has nothing to do with anything.

But the fact that Hartley has been banned before for gouging would actually make me think this time would be looked at pretty severely.

It's too late to cite Hartley anyways, and I don't really care that he didn't get cited. I just think David Attoub has good reason to be pretty damned pissed off is all.

Dupuy is still a little shitbag.

By Anonymous Keo, at March 18, 2010 3:49 am

  • Keo, there is a big difference....the sheer scenario is the difference.....im not saying just because you have a scuffle with someone you can gouge..all im saying is that to prevent being destroyed by ford he was no doubt trying to push him away....yes it was reckless and thats it!!! so ok, turn back the clock and cite him for recklessness, but there is no way that was a deliberate gouge.....Ross in front of hartley, both fighting, hartley pushes ross away by the face...simple as, you push someones face it gets them away further than if you push their chest....

Now look at Attoub his fist is clenched, yet one finger is sticking out, and that finger is in ferris' eye....ferris is on his back at the bottom of a ruck...

now you really dont have to be Einstein to work out which is different....apparently its only the french that cant tell the difference....

(Once again, i apologise to the french fans that do have a clue!)

    By Anonymous No.7, at March 18, 2010 6:50 am

  • I don't buy it, that's all. Like I said, I don't really care at this point, because nothing is going to come of it.

But I watched the match again, and Ford wasn't trying to fight Hartley, he had his head in his arms, so Hartley (justifiably) lashed out. He took a swing at Ford and was pushing his face away. Whatever, accidents happen. I agree.

My point is that you're right in that there needs to be context. No real video evidence of the context for the Attoub gouge. Just a photo. Well, based on photos alone, Hartley looks just as guilty. You can't construct an entire event based on a single photo and the assumption that because they're on the floor that Attoub made a conscientious choice to go knuckle-deep in Ferris' peeper. That's all I'm saying.

I'm not a French fan, if that's what you're implying. In fact, I'm REALLY hoping that England manage to NOT play like shit for once and take the grand slam from them (I really wanted Ireland to win it back-to-back, and I'm a bit bitter they weren't up to snuff). I just think Jeff Blackett is a cock sandwich and the citing commission is flawed. Not insinuating any conspiracy, just that these guys are humans and can miss things. But again, if I were Attoub, I'd be fuming and looking for ways back in is all.

By Anonymous Keo, at March 18, 2010 8:11 am

  • Like to see him do the same against Henry Tuilagi, hehe. Will be good to have foden at full back. Englands back line has looked absolutely dire.

See we've pulled in Tindall at centre for Saturday, probably for defence, but hes been injured for much of the season and is no where near his 2003 best. I guess thats what you have to say about the current state of England rugby, waiting on too many 'Beckham style' players who were great in their day but should probably not be playing internationally.

English rugby needs to step up. :(

    By Blogger cp85, at March 18, 2010 8:40 am

  • "this goes against the laws of physics!! how did foden flatten that huge lock??"

Momentum. You throw a smaller object at speed at a static larger object, i gaurentee it will move in the direction of the smaller object.

Respect to both players here. Foden for being the only player worthy of an England jersey, Kellock for getting up and getting on with it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 11:17 am

  • Why is everyone still going on about Hartley lashing out. It was nothing, the guy deserved having a punch thrown at him, thats probably what he was trying to do but that should be the end of it. There's some french guys going on about eye gouging on here and bias. It's ridiculous. Or did he actually do something bad and i missed it?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 11:44 am

  • "My point is that you're right in that there needs to be context. No real video evidence of the context for the Attoub gouge. Just a photo. As a french, that's exactly what i think, but with my poor english i couldn't explain it very clearly. Thank you Keo for trying to understand what some of us french are trying to explain. And we're not paranoids, we just look at the facts. We have noting against the other nations, we just feel that the citing comissions don't judge everyone equally, that's all.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 12:07 pm

  • With Attoubs case did anyone else think that he may have got his finger caught in the jersey? look at the photo again. It's plausible.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 12:17 pm

  • Keo -

I wish guys would learn the facts before commenting about Atoub - I have posted them here several times. There was something like 30 photos of the Attoub incident submitted to the citing committee, taken over about a 3-second period. Only ONE photo was released to the newspapers, but the officials were allowed to see them all and make a judgement.

So please stop repeating this 'based on one photo' bullshit. I don't think the French press ever acknowledged it, so the French posters don't know about it.

By Anonymous Mike, at March 18, 2010 2:23 pm

  • With Attoubs case did anyone else think that he may have got his finger caught in the jersey? look at the photo again. It's plausible.

So let me get this straight: the guy gets one finger stuck in a jersey, with the other fingers making a fist. Then, gravity sucks a part of the jersey deep into Ferris's eye socket, stretching the rest of the jersey, and dragging Attoub's finger with it, which drags his whole arm into a very bad looking situation.

    Yes, plausible.

By Anonymous Gavin, at March 18, 2010 2:27 pm

  • About Attoub, he's probably guilty and Hartley's gouge might be self defence; but a 70 weeks ban against not even a citation... pretty tough call since Attoub's carreer is now over or at least wasted.
Anyways, I'm just trying to find a balance in this mess and can't see it.

That said, I'm a bit surprised by the whole "England is already beaten, France is grand slam winner" statement.
As a french man, I'm very concerned about that game especially since we haven't win against England since 2006 even when we were looking better than them...
Wait til saturday evening and see...

By Blogger Unknown, at March 18, 2010 2:28 pm

  • ^^^ total agree with you, but we won two times in 2007 against England, even if it was the less important of the 4 matches against England...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2010 3:40 pm

  • Well i suppose we dont know the facts within the actual citing...

i mean the citing commissioner could well have said 'ah, ive seen the photo ill have a look' and after seeing the video there was no case...

I see what you're saying now, i just dont agree...i think out of a rugby game if you freeze frame things you could have an awful picture, but when you watch it in a video its all explainable...

Any thoughts that the commissioner did look into this?

i mean maybe it was going to be a citing but they checked the evidence and there was no case...

almost everyone here has said themselves it really doesnt look like a gouge in the malicious sense....perhaps recklessness but no gouge....

I dont seem to recall ford complaining...did he? (genuine question) i cant remember...

Yes i agree id be miffed if i was attoub, but it would be unjustified, a squabble and a push, or nothing and a gauge? attoubs is always the loser out of these 2 incidents!

(by the way, regarding ferris, i say nothing, but i am aware the, git could have caused untold trouble behind the scenes!)
