Schalk Burger loses his cool and slaps Meyer Bosman

The Stormers beat the Cheetahs 21-8 in a bruising derby in the Super 14 on the weekend, returning them to second place on the log. Stormers captain Schalk Burger had a superb game, but blemished the performance by losing his cool.

Burger played one of his best matches of the season, popping up in support all over the show and putting his body on the line in typical fashion. Totally pumped up throughout, he’s never at less than 100% and sometimes loses the plot a little.

This was the case as the Stormers started a great counterattack from their own tryline, only to have it come to an end with a knock-on. As Meyer Bosman put the hit in on Burger as the whistle went, the big flanker took exception and lashed out with a slap.

He apologised immediately to both Bosman and referee Chris Pollock, and was let off without further punishment. You can hear him saying "Sorry about that, I was just irritated" to the ref.

Burger said after the match "It was a typical derby, you know. The Cheetahs are a very proud unit so it was a tough match." There has since been no talk of a citing.

Just a few weeks ago, Burger lashed out at referee Mark Lawrence while scuffling with Jimmy Cowan of the Highlanders. And in fact last season, Burger gave Griquas player Bees Roux a similar type of flatty. Despite all his worth as a player, he still manages to do silly things at times.

The Stormers are now only one point behind the Bulls on the log after this physical battle. They have a bye ahead of their four match tour to Australasia.

"It always helps having a week off, the guys can relax and recuperate a bit. Hopefully we can nurse the injuries and hopefully we can take those players on tour," said Burger.

Do you think that a stand should have been taken against Burger by sending him off, or did the referee handle things well considering the circumstances? We’ll have the best tries from this match and the weekend in our weekly Pick of the Week compilation soon.

  • lol.. oh dear Schalk.

By Anonymous Benson, at March 25, 2010 11:18 am

  • God he actually is as dumb as he looks, sice when does sorry get you out of pawing someone in the face.

I would have thought after gouging during the summer he would have learned not to stick his hand in someones face again.

    Think again

By Anonymous Kenny, at March 25, 2010 11:25 am

  • Irritated? Yeah right, Schalk. You're probably irritated all of the time whether you're a rugby player or just a dumb idiot with lots of muscles.

What a waste of talent that man is.

By Anonymous Thomas, at March 25, 2010 11:32 am

  • Cue the Irish going nuts about this one ;)

I thought it was well handled actually, but would understand if there was a week or so suspension.. a slap on the wrists if you like.

By Anonymous Matt, at March 25, 2010 11:32 am

  • The ref got this one right. Penalty, and then get on with the game. Yellow cards should be for dangerous or cynical play, not petulance.

That said, Schalk could not have complained had the punishment been harsher, raising your hands like that and you always run the risk.

The guy will only ever play on the edge, however, and this season he has found some great form - hopefully some more sensible management from Rassie Erasmus and he'll cut out these moments of stupidity.

  • silly post RD.i can just see all the burger haters climbing on the ban wagon now.his a good player having a great season.forget about what happend against the lions

By Blogger Alain, at March 25, 2010 11:58 am

  • @ Alain. It's a fair post and it's of interest. Don't be ridiculous. Agree with @Edbok about no punishment.

  • bitch slap hahahahaha

By Anonymous Slappa, at March 25, 2010 12:31 pm

  • can't understand people moaning about a little push and shove... there was nothing in there.
i never commented on here before but followed all the talking about tis man on different videos.
the only thing i can say is: i begin to like schalk burger more and more. i hope his body makes another few seasons. you simply have to love those agressive, vicous und determined forwards going mad for 80mins...
and he has the skill set and knows when to throw a pass.
    sorry for my bad english.

By Blogger Felix, at March 25, 2010 12:43 pm

  • hahah funny stuff.... No card needed... there was nothing in it.

By Anonymous Tui, at March 25, 2010 12:49 pm

  • No problems with the slap there. But what he fuck's this chat about him lashing out at a ref? That just can't go unpunished...

By Anonymous Propinakilt, at March 25, 2010 12:52 pm

  • Oh come-on guys, so he got handed a flatty, so, so what!

I don't see them flashing their fannies wearing ballet tutus, nor do I see them kicking a round ball.

It's good solid RUGBY that all our sons should be playing.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 1:49 pm

  • HAHAHAHHAHAH! so funny! He slapped him like an offended virgin girl

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 2:03 pm

  • sissy slap :D

card? for what? this is a man's game... cards and bans should be for serious stuff like eye gouging...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 2:10 pm

  • "And that...is a bit of a gay slap."

Seriously though, that's not a big deal, eh?

I've never really been a "fan" of Burger, but he's a hard player and you've got to give him some credit at least for apologizing and realizing he'd done something retarded after doing it - not just looking to duck out and hide to "get some treatment from the medical staff" while the refs talk it over, as you'll often see players do.

By Anonymous border, at March 25, 2010 2:15 pm

  • Brian Moore...."More of a gay slap". I think this was needed here! ha

By Anonymous Bradders, at March 25, 2010 2:17 pm

  • I think RD is a bit off in saying Schalk Burger "lashed out" at a ref.

The incident was in fact referred by the citing officer, but the commitee agreed that Burger had made incidental contact with Mark Lawrence - he was scuffling with Jimmy Cowan (who wouldn't), Lawrence came to break them up, and Schalk mistakenly struck him on the arm.

He wasn't lashing out at anyone, and he certainly wasn't aiming anything at the ref.

By Anonymous Edbok, at March 25, 2010 3:27 pm

  • Have you even seen the video of the incident Edbok?

By Anonymous Greiffel, at March 25, 2010 4:09 pm

  • It certainly was nothing major, but there's no doubt it was aimed at the ref, who imo gets in the middle of scuffles way too often for his own good.

By Anonymous Greiffel, at March 25, 2010 4:15 pm

  • hit on the face with an open hand.... could that count as making contact in or near the eye area???

burger up to his old tricks again!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 4:17 pm

  • The guy tried to touch Schalk's dong and Schalk reminded him it was not the real way to treat a lady.

I think Schalk's body acts faster than his brain does, you could see him take a 10 sec breather to try and get in control of himself again. Jekyll vs Hyde in the same jersey.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 4:20 pm

  • "Hit on the face with an open hand.... could that count as making contact in or near the eye area???"

    There's a difference between this:

    And a gay slap. Sorry.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 6:14 pm

  • He's a great player, that's it. Nothing else matters

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 6:57 pm

  • lol
Two words : Burger and cool

    Funny Schalky

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 7:09 pm

  • Very girly thing to do, I can just imagine a rugby fight breaking out where everyone starts slapping each other and swinging hangbags.

    By Blogger Simon7, at March 25, 2010 7:10 pm

  • "hit on the face with an open hand.... could that count as making contact in or near the eye area???"

Yes. If someone takes a picture at the right second it will look at this.

By Anonymous Dalma, at March 25, 2010 7:12 pm

  • I'll stick with the Umaga quote: "This isn't tiddlywinks we're playing here, mate"

I'm not a fan of Schalk Burger, though he is a great player. It's just a little slap, no harm intended, no harm done. Get over it...

By Anonymous Sander, at March 25, 2010 8:34 pm

  • right decision

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 8:37 pm

  • Schalk is the man.no one gives a sh*t what the Schalk haters think anyway.

By Blogger Grayditch, at March 25, 2010 9:30 pm

  • in the ref vid linked to in the somments, I think he's just 'tellin' the ref to have a look at what's happening

By Anonymous mise, at March 25, 2010 10:42 pm

  • There was nothing in it, but Burger knows he can get away with anything anyway.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 11:05 pm

  • "What a waste of talent that man is."

Really? Playing for the Springboks is considered a waste of talent? What planet are you living on?

I think Burger should catch more heat from his teammates and friends for such a girly slap than from any sort of higher-ups.

I also think Burger is a hell of a player, but I the phrase "Schalk Burger loses his cool and..." sounds so right it could be made into a board game...or at least a drinking game. His id reactions are right up there with Nathan Hines or Bernard Jackman...or possibly the entire French Pro D2 league.

As for his push on Lawrence...come on, he was clearly just defending himself from the referee's threatening demeanor. I mean, Mark Lawrence is a force to be reckoned with. Burger was just distancing himself from the danger as quickly as possible. No, seriously though, he's gonna get in trouble one of these days for that kind of stupid shit. You can't touch a referee like that...

  • Burger is a legend... One of the toughest guys around, so much better than that dwarf brussow. Little bitch

By Anonymous Jamie, at March 25, 2010 11:25 pm

  • Brussow = The little Trotter

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 11:26 pm

  • If he can slap him then I think the other guy should have been allowed to deck him in return.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2010 11:31 pm

  • pretty bitch move to slap someone i mean it would of been better and had he jsut pushed him in the face....A slap just seems like much more of a cheap shot..

But anyways its no big deal..Penalty and mvoe on

By Anonymous cheis, at March 26, 2010 1:36 am

  • " ..ooooo all you Schalk haters are just nasty, go away .. he's my hero so he can do whatever he likes .. slap people, push referees, poke eyes .. it's all great because he's my Schalky and I luv that big boofhead boy so very much.

    ... pass me the bucket!

By Anonymous Chuck, at March 26, 2010 9:15 am

  • .......i dont really get all the schalk hate flying around....he plays like any flanker, in terms of 'does what needs to be done' whether its legal or not.....

ok, forget the gouge, it was bad and yes 99.99% of people agree he should have had more, but what do you expect?!?! he's hardly going to turn round and say 'ah, the ban you just gave me is quite short, how about upping it so everyone is happy'

.....so forget it....as for this incident...seems like it barely rates....its good to have it posted, its just another convo topic, but its not like Rory Kockott slap on Adam Thomson, which is what i expected....

id go with 'gay slap' and right decision.... :-/

  • Prick of a player.
Probably a nightmare to play against.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 27, 2010 9:12 am

  • Thats just a stupid by Schalk, but then why get a red for a closed fist, slap results in just a penalty.. I think he plays the situation well if i knew id get away with a 'gay slap' id do it!! He is a super player.. We'd accept him here in ireland!. Actually reminds me of Quinlan in how he plays and gets away with this kind off stuff..

By Anonymous Outside, at March 27, 2010 10:13 pm

  • ....outside....i dont know many irish men that would agree with much you said....yeh burger is a great player....but i cant see him being welcomed into the irish pack....irish flankers arent exactly lacking....

and as for the 'id do it' comment...why?!?!? im not exactly sure, but i dont think i saw any tears in Bosmans eyes, or any fear on his face after receiving such a hefty 'slap'....by all accounts i see this video and wonder why it even came up...i mean, bosman didnt die, burger didnt get sent off, and its hardly outrageous..... just sort of odd if anything....

(not that im complaining RD, i love the vids, and even this video, its just hard to put this in a category.....big hit, no...midweek madness, well not so much mad...friday funny, well not so funny....etc see what i mean?!)

    glad its up though!!! :)
