Hong Kong player does a crazy flip to get on Rugbydump

Here’s a quick clip for you as the week comes to an end and we start what should be a huge weekend of rugby in the Heineken Cup, Super 14, European Challenge Cup, and Asian Five Nations. This clip comes from the latter.

The tournament kicked off last weekend, with hosts Hong Kong beating South Korea 32-8 to jump six positions on the IRB world rankings, boosting their hopes of qualifying for their first ever Rugby World Cup place.

They play Bahrain today and if they come out on top, will climb another three places up to 30th in the world, which translates to a nine-spot progression in the space of a fortnight.

Tries were scored by Nigel Clarke, Keith Robertson, and Tom McQueen as they went on to pick up an impressive victory that holds them in good stead going into this weekend.

Young flyhalf Robertson notched up a personal tally of 14 points, scoring a try and kicking his points, but also flying over a defender with this flip out of the tackle.

He mentioned Rugbydump in a post match interview when talking about the crazy flip move, so I thought it would be cool to share it on here.

Thanks to the RugbyAsia Channel for the footage, and to Keith for keeping Rugbydump on the map globally. You can keep up to date with the tournament here.

Bath ruin the Wasps party at Twickenham

Bath continued their great run of form as they beat Wasps 35-19 at Twickenham in front of 60 000 fans for St Georges day. The bonus point win moved them to fourth place in the Guinness Premiership.

Bath’s Kiwi wing Joe Maddock scored a hat-trick of tries, two of which came from excellent handling. The third, an intercept from a loose pass, was more regulation but just as important.

Olly Barkley in the midfield had a great day out as he kicked 15 points and earned the man of the match award for his general all round play. He’s admitted that he still has England ambitions.

"I've never given up on England and I'd love to go on the tour," said Barkley. "I've missed playing for my country, but the priority for me is getting Bath to the Premiership final," he added.

Coach Steve Meehan was delighted with the win, but is keeping a level head.

"There's a lot of rugby yet; a lot of things can happen. There's the small matter of a match against Leeds who have been playing well, dogging it out. But we've always believed that we could win these last three games. The players have done very well to achieve that," he said.

As for Wasps, they were wearing a special St George’s Day kit, but the loss has all but ruined their hopes of achieving a play-off place. They do however have European hopes, as they face Cardiff Blues on Saturday.

Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 11

With just three rounds left to play, the positions at the top of the Super 14 table couldn’t be tighter. Going into round 12 there are still a possible nine teams that can make the semis. Today we’re taking a look at the best tries from the previous round, round 11.

There was plenty of quality on show once again, so instead of listing them all, we’ll keep this short and touch on what’s going to happen in the upcoming round.

The Bulls are back at home, as they were against the Lions, and they’ve received the boost of Bakkies Botha returning to action. They’ll play a crucial match against the Sharks this weekend, who will be hoping to upset their fellow 2007 finalists.

The second placed Stormers, who went down to the in form Reds, will host the Crusaders in Cape Town in what will be a massive match for both sides as it could determine who makes the semis, and where they will be played.

The Reds will take on the Brumbies in Canberra fresh from a good win over the Stormers. Will Chambers scored a well taken try from a great Quade Cooper crosskick in round 11, so they’ll take confidence from that win and look to move the ball, as they have all season.

That covers the top sides, but there’s also the hopefuls that still stand a chance, with the Waratahs taking on the Highlanders, the Hurricanes facing the Chiefs, the Blues against the Cheetahs, and the Lions hosting the Force.

But for now you can check out the best tries from the previous round with the always entertaining, Pick of the Week. Remember that you can view all the previous rounds by clicking on the sidebar banner for that archived section. Great music, great tries, and a few skimpy cheerleaders too. Can’t go wrong.

Please also not that if you'd like to sponsor a video post you should get in touch as the rates are more than reasonable and you'll get great exposure with an engaged rugby audience.

School of Hard Knocks 2010 - Episode 3

It’s time for another episode of the highly entertaining School of Hard Knocks, the Sky Sports series that shows how a group of unemployed youths from East London get of the streets and come together to form a rugby team.

Episode three is one of the more enjoyable shows, as we get into the nitty gritty of training and one of the bigger guys, Kelly, is picked out for not being aggressive enough.

That soon changes, as we see him unleash the beast in an exercise at a specialist training centre that focuses on self control and anger management.

Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell soon realise that they need to get more involved in what’s happening away from the field, never more so as when one of the players turns up drunk at training, leading Greenwood to investigate further, and even questioning if the whole process is worth it.

Another player then skips training because of a hangover, something that doesn’t go down too well with the coaches it's fair to say. The team are coming together nicely though, even if it might not seem like it on the surface.

As always, the first part is at the top, and if you'd like to watch the other two episodes, check out the related links down below.

The Force upset the Crusaders in Perth

The Force came back from being 13-0 down at halftime to upset the powerful Crusaders 24-16 in their Super 14 clash in Perth on Friday, preventing the Crusaders from taking the top spot on the table.

The home side scored three tries in the second half through Pek Cowan, Matthew Hodgson, and Ben Whitaker, with a late penalty by David Hill preventing the Crusaders from picking up a crucial bonus point.

The Force, who were second from bottom before kickoff, delighted their loyal home crowd who once again packed the stadium and were rewarded with a great upset that will give the Crusaders a bit of a shake up ahead of the fight for semi final places.

The try of the match came from a great run from replacement hooker Nathan Charles, who then found Cameron Shephered in support, who then popped to Matt Hodgson.

The Crusaders’ Dan Carter afterwards said the Force were simply too good on the night.

"They played on the front foot and we struggled to get our game going. We turned it over and we can't afford to do that."

In other news, 22 year old Wallaby flanker David Pocock has re-signed for the Force for another two seasons. Pocock has been at the Perth-based franchise since he was 17, so has shown his loyalty by sticking around, despite them not doing too well this year.

"I do feel like I've improved a lot as a player here and I think there's more opportunity to improve. There were a few different options to think about and I did consider other things but the best decision for me at the moment is the Force," he said.

"My decision was based more on rugby and where I felt where I could develop more but it's definitely a bonus living in Perth. The beaches are good, there's hardly any traffic, it's good to get around," he added.

Prop Rhys Thomas scores then celebrates like a back

Scarlets gave fellow Magners League basement side Connacht a nine-try hammering on the weekend as they beat them 58-10 at Parc y Scarlets, with prop Rhys Thomas scoring two tries.

The second of his two tries was requested to be featured here, not only because of the neat crosskick and perfectly executed inside flick, but because his celebration would do most Fijian wings proud.

Perhaps he was watching Rupeni Caucau score two on RD last week and felt inspired to bring back some of the classic hand gestures. By the look of things he's been practising that for some time and finally got the chance to unleash it on the public.

Whatever the case, it was a good try with a nice finish and while it’s certainly not the best prop try we’ve seen, it was a pretty decent all round effort from each player involved.

Connacht had actually fielded a weakened side, but the result was still pretty convincing and gave Scarlets their biggest Magners League win since 2007.

Adam Ashley-Cooper disallowed try against the Waratahs

The Brumbies are still fuming after referee Steve Walsh failed to award a try that they were certain they had scored in their 19-12 loss to the Waratahs in the Super 14 on the weekend. They have since called for Walsh to be stood down for the next match.

The game itself was pretty dull with not too much to talk about, except for the friction and bickering between Brumbies captain Stephen Hoiles and referee Walsh.

Hoiles found himself penalised a few times with what he called ‘rubbish calls’, and then Walsh failed to award a try to Adam Ashley-Cooper, despite it looking like a sure thing. He deemed that it was a double movement, and was happy with his call.

The Brumbies have since called for Walsh to be replaced as ref ahead of their meeting with the Reds on Saturday.

There will be a review today with the promotion and relegation system taking place.

"We'll wait and see whether he's the referee," said Brumbies coach Andy Friend.

"That's up to the selectors to give their view and we can only deal with what we see and I thought the first 30 minutes it wasn't a very even contest," he added.

Flyhalf Matt Giteau wasn’t quite as reserved, landing himself in hot water with what could be a suspension and a hefty fine for being so outspoken.

"Mate, I don't know if we will turn up (if Walsh is referee) - what's the point? Like anyone that knows rugby, that was a try," he said.

Players’ contracts have a clause that stipulates that they’re not allowed to publicly criticise a referee or assistant ref’s handling of the game. We saw that with former Reds coach Eddie Jones in 2007, when he was fined $10, 000 for having a go at referee Matt Goddard.

Sean Fitzpatrick and Michael Lynagh both seemed to think the try should have been awarded to Ashley-Cooper. What are your thoughts – try or no try?

Best tries of the Top 14 - Round 25

After some big hits in the past few days, we start the week with some tries as we catch up with Round 25 of action in the French Top 14. Here's the top ten tries, as chosen by canal+ television station.

It was a week back but good tries are good tries, and many of you seem to enjoy these compilations. While the tries on display this time around aren’t as good as previous weeks, there’s still a few that are worth checking out.

One of the tries on show is quite an interesting one, in that they’ve included an impressive maul that results in Johnny Leo’o diving over against Biarritz. Certainly not what we’re used to seeing.

There’s also the two tries from that ferocious Toulon vs Perpignan clash, namely to Luke Rooney and Farid Sid, and at number one is a try scored by League convert Karmichael Hunt, who got on the end of a free flowing movement after a good run by Damien Traille.

Enjoy the tries, and if you’re a Twitter user, be sure to follow @Rugbydump for the latest video updates, news, and behind the scenes commentary on the rugby world as we know it.

Dominic Ryan big blindside hit on Chris Cusiter

Glasgow beat a second string Leinster side 30-6 in the Magners League yesterday, keeping them in the top four with play-off ambitions staying alive as a result. We had a request for this brutal blindside hit from Dominic Ryan on Chris Cusiter, so here it is.

Leinster hadn’t won at Firhill since May 2006, but weren’t too bothered with changing that as they fielded an under strength side that did what they could to spoil things for the hosts, who were in search of a bonus point win. It resulted in no less than four Leinster players being yellow carded.

Glasgow scored three tries though through Bernardo Stortoni and Rob Dewey, the latter having scored twice. Dan Parks kicked three conversions and three penalties.

Shortly before halftime Glasgow scrumhalf Cusiter got smashed by loose forward Dominic Ryan, who came in for the blindside hit as the home side created a nice flowing move.

Cusiter stayed down for some time, while Ryan heading to the sin-bin for not rolling away after making the tackle. "That was the least enjoyable game that I have ever played," said Cusiter after the match.

Leinster are guaranteed a top four finish already, and have their Heineken Cup semi-final coming up soon, hence the second string side. It was still a good win for Glasgow though, whose 5000 strong fans celebrated at the final whistle.

Big hits from the top two teams on the Top 14 table

Perpignan and Toulon are now both top of the French Top 14 table after good wins in their matches this afternoon. To go with that, we've got the big hits from their recent clash, the same match that was featured earlier in the week.

Toulon and Perpignan are now both on 80 points, but the Catalans are ahead due to a better points difference, with their 44-0 win over Albi contributing towards that. Toulon on the other hand had to fight for their nailbiting 26-23 win over Brive at the Stade Amedee-Domenech.

In the featured video here now though, we go back a week and bring you the best of the physicality from the two sides when they met in Marseille, and Toulon came out tops 33-23.

You can see monster Henry Tuilagi smash Toulon captain Joe Van Niekerk twice in this clip, with the one hit being absolutely huge at the back of the lineout. Centre Mafileo Kefu put a great textbook tackle in on Vincent Candelon, breaking his arm on impact, and by the look of things giving himself a bit of a sore shoulder too.

Sebastien Bruno had a huge handoff on Guilem Guirado, who later left the field, and in the same movement you can see Gavin Hume getting smashed around by both Sonny Bill Williams and Jocelino Suta.

He bounced back well though and we later see him time the chase of his own kick perfectly as he flew into Jonny Wilkinson, with one of the bigger hits of the season so far.

More clips to come soon. If there was anything you saw (or didn't see) that you think should be featured on Rugbydump, you know what to do - REQUESTS | EMAIL

Try say the title of this post three times fast, then let the big hitting begin.

Michael Swift great team try for Connacht against Leinster

It was a top versus bottom encounter at the Sportsground on Wednesday night as Connacht hosted league leaders Leinster and produced a great performance to beat them 27-13, thus boosting their chances of Heineken Cup qualification.

Tries from Brian Tuohy, Troy Nathan, and this cracker from Michael Swift, helped Connacht to only their second win over Leinster since 2004.

Michael Swift scored one of the tries of the season for Connacht as they swept up field through some great handling and continuity, recycling the ball at speed and offloading before contact.

They held out the Leinster attacks for the rest of the match with a great defensive display, setting up a Heineken Cup promotion place encounter with Ulster at Ravenhill. Both sides sit at the bottom of the table with 26 points a piece.

The home crowd swamped the field at fulltime, celebrating what was a historic and inspired win over the European champions and Magners League leaders.

Incidentally, Heineken Cup semi final tickets went on sale yesterday so if you’re wanting to get to the matches, you can get them through our ticketing partner Viagogo, who’ve kindly given all Rugbydump users a 5% discount voucher. Details below the vid.

Sebastien Chabal interview and France video tribute

We chatted to Grand Slam winner and French rugby icon Sebastien Chabal recently to find out a little more about the man behind the beard. Seabass let's us know what music gets him fired up, what he would be doing if he wasn't a rugby player, and tells us about his relationship with Ali Williams.

RD: Congratulations for winning the Grand Slam. How great did it feel beating England in Paris, and who had the biggest hangover the next day?
Beating England in Paris really was enjoyable, though the greatest feeling actually was winning the Grand Slam. I can’t tell the truth if I want to have a chance to get selected ever again…

RD: Who would you consider to be the French player of the tournament?
Lionel Nallet

RD: How are you enjoying your time back in France at Racing Metro?
First I would like to say that I had 5 really good years in Manchester. After this quite long period it was time for me to go back home. I joined a really good club. I am enjoying my time with the Racing Metro 92. In Paris, you can also go out and have a good meal, which I have missed during my time in England.

RD: The Sharks in Durban have had a few French players enjoy their time there - Thierry Lacroix, Olivier Roumat, Frederic Michalak. Have you ever considered playing in the Super 14 yourself, or anywhere else?
I have had an opportunity to play for the Sharks in Durban but I preferred to stay with the sale sharks. I wanted to go play in Japan but it was too difficult because of my family and now at 32, I am going to end my career in France.

RD: You've dished out many big hits, but who has hit YOU the hardest?
No one I can remember.

RD: Have you spoken to Ali Williams since breaking his jaw a few years ago?
I spoke with him when we went on tour with France in New Zealand, in 2008. Before that, right before the 2007 World Cup in France, the NZ federation asked to all supporters to send out some soup recipes to make sure Ali could eat and be ready to take part in the tournament. It was a success, and a recipe book was issued. Ali sent me one with a note. That was funny.

RD: You’re one of the world’s most feared players in world rugby. Is there a player or team that you consider quite terrifying, and who is the best player you’ve played with or against?
The South African team and without doubt, I can say Jason Robinson.

RD: What is your first choice position?
Number 8

RD: The second try you scored against Namibia in the 2007 World Cup was without a doubt one of the tries of the tournament. Do you have a favourite try that you’ve scored over the years?
No, to be honest I don’t remember much of the tries I scored.

RD: Who were your rugby and other sporting heroes growing up?
I never had any sporting hero.

RD: If a charity close to your heart requested that you shave your hair and beard for money, would you consider it?
If they really needed money I think we could do a lot of things to raise money with my hair and my beard still on my head.

RD: What’s your favourite band to listen to before a match?
ACDC

RD: Away from rugby, what are your favourite things to do in your spare time?
Playing cards and poker in particular.

RD: You’re quite an intimidating character. Does Sebastien Chabal have a good sense of humour?
OOOOOOOOOOH yes. I can joke and laugh about everything.

RD: Is it true that you once took a run up and charged through the bouncers in a night club in Galway because they wouldn't let you in?
Where is Galway…?

RD: If you had never made it as a rugby player, what would you be doing now?
Mechanics

RD: What is the inspiration behind your leg tattoo, and where did you get it?
I started it in 2000 in Bourgoin-jallieu and never had it finished. It’s stayed like this until now.

RD: Do you have any regrets about not going to play for Toulon?
No, I don’t have any regrets because I am now playing in an proficient and very ambitious club, though I am pleased that Toulon remained in the top 14, and even after signing for the Racing, I wish Toulon the best.

RD: Lastly, have you ever visited Rugbydump before and what are your feelings on sharing rugby clips on the internet?
I don’t watch or read much about rugby on the internet or in the papers, though it’s nice to share some good videos, whether there are regarding rugby or anything else.

Chabal recently relaunched his website at SebastienChabal.fr. Visit the site to read Racing Metro news, find out more about him, and see some great behind the scenes pictures and videos of what Seabass gets up to, both and and off the pitch. You can follow him on Twitter at @sebchabal, and also in English @sebchabal_eng.

Rupeni Caucaunibuca's two tries for Agen against Narbonne

Yesterday it was mentioned on the Rugbydump Facebook page that Rupeni Caucanibuca had scored two tries against Narbonne on the weekend. The overwhelming response was that of intrigue, so here's the tries for you, as promised.

Agen play in ProD2, the second division in French rugby, and are looking like they'll be promoted to the Top 14 next season as they're currently sitting comfortably on top of the table, especially after this 57-12 win over Narbonne.

They scored eight tries in total, two of which were scored by the man widely regarded as one of the most exciting players to have ever graced a rugby field. While Caucau doesn't quite look the same as many of us remember him, he is still only 29, and has serious ambitions of playing in next years World Cup in New Zealand.

"I wish to represent Fiji at the 2011 Rugby World Cup as well," he said recently.

It would be an incredible achievement if he managed it, considering he's been in the rugby wilderness for a while, with doping bans and disciplinary issues not helping his cause.

"Many things has been said about me. Most of them negative but I would like to right the wrong. First and foremost, I thank the Almighty who can reopen the door that was shut on me.

"Anything is possible through God. I thought this chance was lost forever.

Caucau explained that he wants to use the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup as an opportunity to prove that he's still got what it takes to play rugby at the highest level.

"The passion and interest has always been in me to play for Fiji but something always happens and as usual, I get to be the centre of criticism. I want to prove my critics wrong," he added.

Check out the related links below the video to relive some classic Caucau tries.

Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 10

Round 10 of the Super 14 was jam-packed with great tries, starting with the superb performance from the Stormers against the Chiefs where we saw the Habana try that should be up for Try of the Season. Let's take a look at the other great moments now though as we bring you our regular Super 14 Pick of the Week.

Getting this video down to only five minutes was quite a challenge as there were a handful of matches that produced tries that alone could take up that amount of time. The Stormers try that you saw here on RD earlier in the week has been included again, as well as their other great scores from Duane Vermeulen, hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, and big wing Sireli Naqelevuki.

From the Crusaders match against the Cheetahs, we've got the Kahn Fotuali'i try where he glided for 50m virtually untouched before diving over to score. For the Blues, All Black prop Tony Woodcock scored one of the tries of the weekend as he received a pass from fellow front rower John Afoa to score against the Force.

The Lions continue to lose, but still managed to challenge the Sharks and in fact scored a few very good tries. Carlos Spencer played at fullback and had one of his better matches so far this season. He was involved in the build up for their nicely finished Derick Minnie try.

For the Hurricanes Conrad Smith showed his guile as he popped up at just the right time to score a nice try against the Brumbies after some excellent handling amongst the backs.

One of the biggest stories of the weekend though was the Reds beating the Bulls in Brisbane, so included in this compilation are the great tries from ace finisher Scott Higginbotham and flyer Rod Davies. Or is it the other way around?

Enjoy this weeks Super 14 Pick of the Week and please share the link with friends, teamates, and anyone else who you think will enjoy seeing these great tries again, or for the first time.

Midweek Madness - Jerry Collins' slightly misdirected hit

The quarter finals of the Heineken Cup produced some excellent games of rugby with close results and plenty to talk about for the fans. Biarritz against Ospreys in San Sebastien was one of the more eventful matches of the weekend.

The match included the excellent try from Zee Ngwenya and ultimately ended in a missed dropkick and a referee call that many felt was completely incorrect, thus resulting in Ospreys’ exit from the competition.

Perhaps Jerry Collins knew it wasn’t going to be a great game for him as fairly early on in the first half he made one of the hits of the season, despite the Biarritz player not having the ball and being nowhere near the action.

The clip was requested by a few guys who wanted to see it again, not only for a chuckle, but simply because it was quite bizarre how far off the ball it was. One can only think that Collins stuck his head down and committed himself to the hit very, very early on.

He was penalised only, and upon reflection, was perhaps lucky to get away with just that. Luckily injured flyhalf Julien Peyrelongue (edit) recovered after a few minutes strewn on the turf.

The semi finals are coming up soon with tickets becoming available through our ticketing partners Viagogo tomorrow morning at 9am. As mentioned on a previous post, you can get a 5% discount if you buy with them using the Rugbydump tracking code VGGDUMP5.

School of Hard Knocks 2010 - Episode 2

It’s been less than a week since the first episode of the School of Hard Knocks was featured here on Rugbydump, so with such a positive response, it’s time to bring you the next instalment as we head into episode two of this great series.

In episode one we got introduced to the program as we saw the group of misguided youths brought into the team that they’ll be part of for eight weeks. The goal; to get them off the streets, change their lives for the better, and teach them the values and skills that are part of playing the wonderful sport of rugby.

Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell are along for the ride as they act as mentors to the young boys who, along with the guidance of the team from Rugby Performance, will be put through their paces to get them in shape and fighting fit for their first rugby match.

In part one of this episode we see what happens when some of the lads turn up late for training, we learn more about where a few of them come from, and the guys get prepared for one of their biggest challenges in the near future – job interviews.

Some of them ace it, but many are a bit confused about where they want to be and what they want to do in life. Fitness training is also on the cards, but one individual in particular struggles to adjust to the new way of life.

A trip to a police training facility then proves to be a real eye opener for the young guys as they undergo genuine police training drills, providing them with new found respect for the coppers.

It’s another fascinating episode of this very enjoyable show. More to come soon and if you like it, please leave a thanks or a positive comment to let us know. Thanks also go to Rugby Performance and Sky Sports for their part in making this great series.

Mouritz Botha big hit on Jordan Turner-Hall

Saracens returned to Wembley Stadium this past weekend as they hosted Harlequins in the Guinness Premiership at the world famous venue. This short clip was much requested and is of the tackle of the match, from Sarries lock Mouritz Botha.

The day out at Wembley was more than about just the rugby, it was an event as prematch entertainment included a tightrope walker circling the stadium, a performance from West End show War Horse, and Right Said Fred amusing the crowd.

For Saracens, it was the fourth time that they’ve used Wembley as a venue, and with a crowd of over 47 000 turning up on the day, there’s no doubt that it was once again a success.

Their goal was to finish in the top four and with this being their last home game, it was vital to assert their dominance over Harlequins.

"I've got some good memories from our other matches at Wembley," said lock Botha.

"It's been a really successful venue for us and I think everyone gets inspired to raise their performance when they play in front of a big crowd in such an iconic venue. You just get a special feeling every time you run out there."

While it was Schalk Brits and Andy Saull who dazzled the crowd, second rower Botha made the biggest hit of the day as he smashed Quins centre Jordan Turner-Hall later in the match. Turner-Hall took some time to get up, feeling the full affects of what was a superb hit.

Saracens won the match 37-18. Highlights of the match will follow soon, but don’t forget you can watch all the Guinness Premiership highlights on the Omnisport player on the sidebar here.

The Reds beat the Bulls in classic match at Suncorp

The Queensland Reds leaped into the top four of the Super 14 on Saturday when they beat the Bulls 19-12 in a highly entertaining match in front of 26,669 fans at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

It was only the second defeat of the Bulls’ campaign but the defending champions were their own worst enemy at times, making uncharacteristic errors as they were unable to find an answer for the persistent running game of an inspired Reds side.

The Bulls are still on track for that all important home semi final though, ending round ten in joint first position with the Crusaders, with the Canterbury men in pole position due to a superior points difference.

The Reds, coached by axed Stade Francais coach Ewen McKenzie, are now serious title contenders with just four weeks left in the tournament.

"All credit to the players," said McKenzie. "We had a very specific game plan and they went out and tried their best to make it happen. They did a really good job and showed plenty of character and application.

"We didn't want to give them the ball, so we had to find ways to be creative. It's hard to play 80 minutes without giving them the ball, but that was our intention and we did pretty well.

"We didn't give them the line-outs that they wanted to play and set up their game with. For long periods of time we didn't give them the chance to play the structured game that they like to play and then they got tired from making a lot of tackles."

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke was unable to fault his teams commitment and instead praised the quality of the Reds team, who scored tries through Scott Higginbotham and Rod Davies.

"The Reds played fantastically. They took us almost out of the game in terms of possession. It's a very expansive style, but their retention was spot on. Definitely one of the best continuity performances I've seen in a long time and they deserved to win."

It was a well deserved match for the Reds and their loyal fans, who were over the moon at the final whistle. Phil Kearns summed up the feeling in the ground when he said "There's blokes in private boxes up here patting each other on the butts!"

Great match for the neutral, with some brilliant tries and excellent defense from both sides, particularly the Reds in the closing stages. Enjoy the extended highlights.

Toulon go top with good win over Perpignan

Toulon went ahead of Perpignan at the top of the Top 14 standings this weekend after they beat them 33-23 in an intense match at the jam-packed Stade Veledrome in Marseille.

Flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson was instrumental in the win as he kicked 23 points, including two drop goals, five penalties, and a conversion. One of his drops was from about 50 meters out, and is included in the clip as part of his interview.

Luke Rooney scored twice in the first half with both Joe Van Niekerk and Sonny Bill Williams providing the impressive assists that set him up to canter over. Williams himself has had interest shown in him from New Zealand, who will likely attempt to lure him back before the 2011 World Cup.

Perpignan scored a great try of their own, with Farid Sid going over after some excellent handling from the backs. It wasn’t enough though as Wilkinson punished them in the second half and the champion Catalan side went home with nothing.

This clip features most of the tries in the match, and includes a French interview with the battered looking Wilkinson, who took a few big knocks including one that can be seen in the clip, from Gavin Hume.

Habana crosses for outstanding Stormers team try vs the Chiefs

The Stormers scored one of the team tries of the season in Hamilton on Friday as they beat the Chiefs 49-15 in the Super 14. Bryan Habana got on the end of a great movement to stroll over, but it was the build up that was sensational to watch.

The Stormers, who have the best defensive record in the tournament this season, scored six tries as the injury ravaged Chiefs tried in vain to break through the defences of the well organised Cape Town based outfit.

The six-tries-to-two win for the touring Stormers means that they are now joint table toppers with the Bulls, but are now strongly fancied as favourites by many.

With the game finely balanced at 6-3 after twenty minutes, they managed to counter attack from a dangerous position, thus producing one of the tries of the season as both forwards and backs handled the ball with incredible ability, offloading in the tackle and retaining possession when they were finally brought down short of the tryline.

A long pass out to supreme finisher Bryan Habana meant he could stroll over to score the try that featured Jaque Fourie twice, Schalk Burger twice, Tiaan Liebenberg twice, Francois Louw, Sireli Naqelivuki, the galloping Andries Bekker, and then scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenhage and flyhalf Peter Grant.

Schalk Burger, who was everywhere on the night and featured prominently in this try, said his side weren’t going to get carried away with the great win, but would enjoy it.

"For a change we're playing some good rugby right up there and the last few seasons we've been labeled the perennial underachievers.

"So obviously it's nice to be up there on the log but you only need one week to put yourself under pressure again in this competition and next week across the ditch we're playing the Reds, who had a really successful tour of South Africa.

"It's tough to go back-to-back in this competition but we managed to do it, so it's been a pretty awesome week," he added.

New Zealand coach Graeme Henry had earlier in the day named the Stormers as the side he feels are the best in the tournament currently. After this performance, and what is without a doubt a contender for Try of the Season, he’s probably not far off.

Isa Nacewa tackle on Gareth Owen

Leinster picked up a vital 20-16 victory over Ospreys last night as they stretched their lead at the top of the Magners League table to seven points. This nice tackle by Isa Nacewa was requested on the forum.

Nacewa scored a try for Leinster after just 11 minutes but the Ospreys hit back shortly afterwards with flyhalf Dan Biggar landing three penalties and converting his own try to give the visitors a 16-10 halftime lead.

Ospreys were playing their third match in six days, and looked as though they felt the affect as Shaun Bern scored a converted try before a late penalty from McFadden secured the win for Leinster.

This hit isn’t huge, but it’s nicely timed and looked pretty good and the ball was dislodged from Gareth Owen as Nacewa hit him. In truth it possibly should have been ruled a knock on by Nacewa, but those ones are tough for the ref to see.

There’s been plenty of games in the last two days, so if there’s anything you spotted or that you’d like to contribute, please get in touch. You can either drop us a mail, or post a message in the request section.

Smarter Rugby with Ian McGeechan - Support Lines & Out Ball Drill

We've got a few coaching tips for you ahead of the weekend as we catch up with the ASICS Smarter Rugby series featuring Ian McGeechan, who this week talks about support lines and positioning on attack.

In the first clip McGeechan talks about the ball carrier having players on each shoulder with the option of popping to them just before contact, with them changing their running line to beat the defender. So you're basically hitting the gap before catching the ball.

The second video is similar in nature in that it's also about changing your path before taking the ball, but this time it's when hitting the outside of a defender, as discussed by Jeff Wilson in a video I posted a while back.

The trick is to time your run nicely after getting a long pass that allows you to drift outside before or while taking the ball, thus throwing off the would be tackler. It's a great technique and one that can be used to great effect, providing the service is good from the inside man.

Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 9

It’s tight at the top of the Super 14 table as the Bulls reclaimed their place at number one but have a determined Crusaders side chasing them down. The Waratahs and Stormers aren't far behind either. Let's take a look at the best tries now though, with the Pick of the Week from round nine of the tournament.

There were plenty of tries scored in round nine, with a few high scoring matches meaning that gaps were opening up all over the place, mainly thanks to the Cheetahs and the Lions, who’ve both struggled this season with their defensive structures.

At the top of the table it’s the Bulls who aren’t looking their best while on the road, but still managed to beat the Cheifs with a nice try from Gerhard Van Den Heever that’s included here. Check out the neat flick from Morne Steyn that gets him through the gap.

The Reds scored four tries in the opening 16 minutes against the Lions at Ellis Park, as they notched up a 41-26 win as Quade Cooper once again marshalled the troops and continued in his rich vain of form. The Lions didn’t give up though, scoring a few tries themselves, including one for Michael Killian from a neat Carlos Spencer special.

The Stormers were really impressive as they brushed aside a Blues side that a week earlier had beaten the Bulls. Jaque Fourie scored a great try from a Gio Aplon breakout, and Joe Rokocoko also crossed after a great interchange with Isaia Toeava. Keep an eye out for Toeava’s huge hand off on Stormers flanker Francois Louw.

The Brumbies dominated the Cheetahs in Canberra as they scored nine tries on their way to a 61-15 win. There were plenty of tries to choose from, but Rocky Elsom and Alfi Mafi get theirs included here as the Brumbies let loose with some great attacking rugby.

One of the best tries of the weekend though would have to be the one scored by Fetu’u Vainikolo for the Highlanders against the Force. The hard running winger has had many tries ruled out this season by the TMO, and it seems like everytime he scores these days, it’s referred. This time he got it down though, despite being airborn and outside the field of play. Sensational.

Enjoy this week’s compilation, and be sure to check out the link on the sidebar that now allows you to easily view previous week’s tries. Or you can go there now if you’d like.

Your favourite try this week?

School of Hard Knocks 2010 - Episode 1

Last year the School of Hard Knocks went to North Wales where a hardened group of troublesome youths were taught the values and skills needed to be part of a rugby team. This year, the fascinating show is based in London and runs as a full length series.

Former British & Irish Lions legends Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell are back to play their part as mentors to the group of unemployed young men who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, most of whom had never played rugby.

Over a period of eight weeks, Quinnell and Greenwood face the challenge of channelling the energy and aggression of the guys into the sport, helping them grow as both a team and as individuals who can get off the street and make a proper life for themselves.

This year the show is far edgier and offers more insight into the process, with plenty of incidents and many life-changing moments for the young guys, both on and off the field.

Posted here today is the first episode of the series, broken up into three parts. The first episode introduces us to the group as they themselves get introduced to rugby. A phone gets stolen along the way, they learn a few new dance moves, and they get an inspirational talk from boxer Mark Prince.

It’s just over twenty minutes in total, and well worth getting into as later on a few stars are born, a player takes on Greenwood, and the team nail their job interviews.

More episodes will be posted over the next few weeks if the response is positive, so let us know what you think of the series, and the concept on a whole. Part 1 is at the top.

Clint Newland unleashes on Pek Cowan in Queenstown

With the current demand for highlights from various tournaments, there seems to be little time left for short clips these days. Summaries of matches are all good and well, but RD isn’t a highlights channel after all, so let’s take a look at something a bit different now that some of you might enjoy seeing.

The Highlanders played the Force in picturesque Queenstown on the weekend in what was a rare day game in the Super 14, the first and only in New Zealand this year in fact.

It was close up until the 70th minute, but the 11th and 13th placed sides only had pride to play for and it was the Force who came to the party in front of the 5000 fans on hand at the Queenstown Events Centre.

The Highlanders did score an excellent consolation try, but the 41-27 win for the Force was described by smiling captain Nathan Sharpe as ‘strange’.

In the first half the front rowers kicked off with monster Clint Newland of the Highlanders and Pek Cowan of the Force having a full go. It didn’t last long, but it’s pretty rare to see any punches thrown in a match these days, let alone a barrage of them.

The best part of the incident, and perhaps the reason for posting it, would be the two pumped up players leaving the field bickering, side by side, then having to spend the next ten minutes sitting next to one another.

We'll hopefully have more amusing clips for you soon, but keep sending the requests in. While some clips may not be possible to get, others will definitely be looked at and if all goes well, posted here on the site.
