The inspirational story of Charlie Pattison
It's a long weekend for many as time is spent with family and celebrations take place around the world. I figured it wouldn't hurt to throw in an inspirational clip today, as we highlight the story of a young man who's had to face different obstacles to most.
Charlie Pattison was born without a right hand, meaning that he had to adapt to life a little differently. As with all kids though, if they know no different, it's not an issue and one adapts.
The incredible thing about Charlie is that he's never let his disability hold him back. He in fact has always played sports, and now plays competitive rugby, mixing it up with the best of them for his club Harpendon RFC in London's division two.
As you'll see in the clip, Charlie not only plays, but is one of their best players and despite having huge challenges ahead of him, aspires to progress further in the game.
While he's never known any different, the fact is that he gets out there and plays with such a disadvantage, when others in his position would possibly not consider giving it a go. That alone should be an inspiration for us all.
Performing well and being a valued asset to the side, well that's just fantastic.

inspirational. Go on to great things Charlie Pattison you are truly the epitome of rugby - courage and character.

I'm normally against wishy-washy terms, but when you see a guy like this, maybe we should start saying 'differently abled' rather than 'disabled' - he's better at rugby than me, I play in the same region and I play several leagues below him. Would be pretty stupid of me to consider myself more able than him

What does he do under the high ball? Yeah fair enough he doesn't have a hand, but I've seen players with much much worse who don't get media spotlight. Infact a team mate of mine has arthritis which has pretty much crippled him and three collapsed disks but still is the star player in the London Wasps junior academy.

.........theres always one fucker who cant give credit....
les blues you are (id imagine i speak for all of us) a dick!

I've played against him, in a match where he scored 2 tries, and he was pretty bloody good, big legs and a good step.

I think he is unlucky obviously to not have 2 hands, but lucky in a way that his upbringing probably caused him to have enough determination....
also i think he is lucky he has a sort of wrist....like he can grip the ball between his forarm and bicep as it warrants....

Great story, very inspirational. He really looks pretty damn good too.
Les Bleus, what's your point?!
Tell your teamate to contact the IRB or Sky Sports or something..?? Odd comment mate.

I´ve played against a guy with just one leg, believe it or not. Shows there is no limit when you have a strong head.

You of little faith...

Good on him that is some awesome stuff! I had an uncle who lost his right arm in a tractor accident and whenever I saw him at Christmas time I would always put my right hand in my back pocket so I would always remember to put out my left hand when I shook his hand.
By southpaw, at April 05, 2010 3:15 am
Mark, no, his league isn't two divisions from the top. In reality this is the 7th division, London second division.

les bleus shut up..........you no longer have any credibility on this site.....i will make sure of that. you cannot give any credit to people like him....

No opinion is wrong, I have mine and you have yours. Yet you continue behind an anonymous post, atleast I gave my name.
By Les Bleus, at April 05, 2010 11:59 pm
Um...
What a character...
Besides, I'm sending this clip to those who play at 10 and still unable to catch a ball with a flashy pair of gloves...
By vinniechan, at April 06, 2010 10:18 am
Les Bleus yeah well said. Except what you posted was a patronising lecture thinly disguised as "your opinion"
What are you implying? That we're incapable of considering other more disadvantaged athletes until you came along?
May I express my opinion: you need to hide your condescension for other human beings better.
By Jeremy, at April 06, 2010 3:24 pm
I'm saying, get on with your life instead of worrying about others, everybody has a sop story and it is getting really boring. So what, he doesn't have a hand? Some people don't eat for a week, some people never see the ocean, some people kill themselves. Should we do an article on every person?
By Les Bleus, at April 06, 2010 5:14 pm
Wow, Les Bles.. you've got a strange outlook on life mate.
Have you ever thought that this story could inspire people to overcome their own challenges and perhaps even give them a new lease on life as they realise that there's others out there with more to deal with than them?
The pessimistic, 'tough guy' attitude that comes through in your comments is really poor.
On a side note, tomorrow there will be an article about a rugby player who didn't eat for a week, hasn't seen the ocean, and then committed suicide.
By Greiffel, at April 06, 2010 5:46 pm
Les Bleeus you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, but this opinion is shit. And please change your nickname, I'm french and i dont want to have anything to do with that
By Oli, at April 06, 2010 6:42 pm
Then don't be French anymore, that is your problem not mine.
Admire no one but yourself, because everyones shit stinks.
By Les Bleus, at April 06, 2010 7:02 pm
'No opinion is wrong, I have mine and you have yours. Yet you continue behind an anonymous post, atleast I gave my name.'
you gave your name?!? well ok, what is it? Lesley Bleus...?
honestly, your attitude is the only thing that stinks round here...
You think this story isnt worth anything? what about the chap that had one leg (mentioned above) he was always told no...but he said yes, and played....
there could be kids around that want to get involved but have disabilities that they think might prevent them....
I mean your story was a good one, could you not have gone: 'ah well done to this chap, guess what, my team mate....blah blah..' instead you take the good ole shit for brains out look.
and yeh people kill themselves...id assume the reason we dont hear stories about them is because its not very inspiring is it?!? 'Mr Jones played rugby when he was younger, broke his leg, lost his job, his wife left him, he had no house, his family died, so he killed himself.....' I mean thats feel good story of the f*cking year isnt it!!!
grow up!
By (u-p)rick!, at April 07, 2010 12:10 am
How is this a feel good story? Just a guy who plays rugby. Just a bloody skeleton with skin who will rot one day like all of us.
By Les Bleus, at April 07, 2010 1:22 am
Thanks for your opinion Les Bleus, but I'd say we've heard enough for now. Sorry you feel that way.
Have a great day mate.
By Greiffel, at April 07, 2010 9:00 am
i suppose if we all played rugby to the standard i imagine les blues plays we'd all have a sh*tty outlook on life!
lol....
By (u-p)rick!, at April 08, 2010 2:46 am
well back to the point, this guy is bloody immense!!
By Anonymous, at April 09, 2010 3:37 pm
Thank you, it's an inspirational story, not easy for anybody involved for good, they will make the best out of it!
And much respect, Charlie Pattison & mum ;)
