Simaika Mikaele huge hit at the Hong Kong Sevens

Samoa won their third consecutive IRB World Series Sevens series last weekend in Hong Kong as they beat New Zealand in the final, elevating them into the lead of the world series for the first time.

New Zealand, who had already knocked out both South Africa and Fiji, had taken the lead in the match following two quickfire tries from Kurt Baker. Samoa came back though through Simaika Mikaele, who scored two of his own to take them into the lead at halftime.

Flyer Mikaele Pesamino then scored two for Samoa in the second half as they went on to take the 24-21 win in front of 40 000 people at the Hong Kong Stadium.

This huge hit from try scorer Mikaele on Kiwi Ben Souness was felt around the ground. It's perhaps symbolic of what's been happening in the series of late, with the Samoans proving too powerful for the competition with their exciting brand of physicality mixed with raw speed and talent.

Souness, to his credit, took a bit of time to recover but then jumped back up and played on.

There haven't been too many requests for Sevens highlights of late, despite plenty of quality action taking place in recent tournaments. Please remember that if you'd like to see something in particular, you should place a request via email or in the requests section.

  • As you see that pass coming over you just know it's going to hurt. One of those where you say "Cheers mate!" to whoever's sent a nice loopy one your way when you're playing Samoa!

  • Sheesh, that was a hospital pass alright!

Can we just put in a standing request for sevens footage? Does anyone know where you can watch them online; the coverage on US TV is a bit rubbish.

  • i hate to get those passes, got one of those of a stand-in scrumhalf once when i was in my own tryzone going for a kick, relieving us of some pressure, guess what happend no8 and no7 teamed up on me and i only just got the ball away before being smashed. brilliant!

  • I agree with Anarchangel, I would happily watch sevens all day but given that we don't get much on TV in France, it's not possible to make requests as most of the time I don't have a clue what's going on on the sevens circuit.

Regular round-ups of the various legs of the World Sevens series, in a similar style to the S14 Picks of the week and Top 14/H Cup picks would be much appreciated!

Keep up the good work, RD.

  • HUGE...

In what world wasn't that a penalty Samoa for the NZ player holding on. Would hate to have seen NZ score of the move afterwards...

I'm with Anarchangel... a standing request - the highlights of each round please.

  • Griffin,

I have to agree with you on that. NZ player that got smashed was the same one that held on to the Samoan player's leg. It's odd, yet pleasing, to see NZ result to cheating tactics against a small nation such as Samoa.

I think DJ Forbes had it right when he said Samoa has a psychological advantage over NZ.

  • There's no way to see whether that should have been a penalty for no releasing or not from that clip. The ref was in a much better position. If you look at the still at the top of the post, the Samoan players don't have their hands anywhere near the ball and that's when penalties come.
