Zee Ngwenya's great try for Biarritz against Ospreys

Biarritz progressed to the Semi Finals of the Heineken Cup in a closely contested quarter final with Ospreys earlier today. The French, playing in San Sebastian, won the game 29-28 as a late drop kick from Dan Biggar went wide.

Ten points from the boot of Dimitri Yachvili, three drop goals from Damien Traille, and a try each from Zee Ngwenya and Iain Balshaw ultimately proved the difference for Biarritz in this fiercely contested and entertaining game in the Spanish sunshine.

Ospreys scored three tries of their own with Ryan Jones, Lee Byrne, and Nikki Walker all crossing to score while Biggar kicked 13 points. The match ended a bit controversially as it looked as though the ref had given a penalty to Ospreys, but instead ruled a knock on.

Ngwenya, the Zimbabwean born USA flyer, scored this sensational try as he gassed Mike Phillips and Shane Williams while it looked like both players were waiting for him to cut back inside. As we’ve seen before though, give Ngwenya space at your own peril.

Biarritz’s narrow in now sets them up to play either that of Munster or Northampton, who are playing currently in their quarter final. Leinster already qualified for the semi finals as they beat Clermont last night, with the same scoreline as this match – 29-28.

Not a chance... two missed tackles and he burned past some sharp players. It was great to see a player back himself two on one and go on the short side. Great try.

Ha, I love seeing Shane Williams' defence being shown up for what it is. And to the question about why they played in Spain, it's because Biarritz is in the Basque region, covering southwest France and northeast Spain, so they don't really see it as crossing the border. At least that's how I think it is.

Biarritz play their big games in Spain because their stadium is not big enough for such occasions, and just like Kearney for tests said, Biarritz is in the Pays Basque which is a crossborder region that has a strong identity, and their own language, so for them it's quite the same to play in San Sebastian or in Biarritz.

Awesome try, and awesome game just like Leinster Clermont, with the same score (I wish Clermont scored that last dropgoal... They SO deserved it ! These guys are doomed !)

It's a shame that probably the most dangerous attacking teams (Clermont, Ospreys)are out of the competition due to lack of precision. This match reminds me of the first lions test with the match being won by the less talented team due to the other teams lack of finishing. Shame but ah well.

That's how he normally does it for Biarritz...he just blows past the defense, or he gets taken into touch - either way, he usually makes pretty good ground or, in some cases like this one, scores a try.

Zee is actually pretty much a South African. He is like Tonderi Chavangha. (Meaning if the talent scouts spotted him he could be playing for one of the lower South African Super 14 clubs, Cheetahs - Lions etc.)

Why all the disrespect towards Williams? He's been a top player for years. I really don't understand it, he's scored against just about everyone...oh, wait...I see...

Anyway, another great game, a great try - Ospreys nearly as unlucky as Clermont were. All the quarters so far have been fantastic, with only my guys winning by more than a point!

What a pathetic comment. Not every knock-on that occurs while trying to intercept is a deliberate knock-on. It wasn't as if it was open play like that Kurtley Beale knock-on the other week against the Sharks or a poor knee-jerk reaction like Leo Cullen against Munster (though I thought that was a bit harsh).

You really ought to learn to just appreciate a good try when it's scored, and this was a hell of a try.

Is being played in San Sebastian (basque Donostia) because culturally and by language they belonged to the same country...despite now being separated by imposed borders. All of them are parts of the Basque country...old kindgdom of Navarre.
For biarritz is not like playing in Spain but in the basque "Spanish" zone of their own nation-less country.
Similar to Cataluna and Perpignan...which is being given money by the Catalan government.

You don't intercept many passes slapping the ball down though do you?

It was a great finish, pace to beat Phillips and to be honest, a great fend on Williams with the pace to beat Byrne and Williams to the line.

Great game of rugby that.

If it's an attempt to intercept it's just a knock on. Ngwenya tried to intercept with one hand, he definitely meant to get it not to knock the ball down.In the same fashion the Toulon's winger was sin binned yesterday, he made a knock on as long as he was defending between the two players.

it's quite cool to see this against the clock - he catches the ball on 10.50 and is at the line on 11.00 so basically runs nearly the length of the pitch in 10 seconds... with boots and carrying a ball and with a little goose step in there too.... ELECTRIC!
I am a big fan of wingers like Ngwenya, Chavanga, Williams etc that have ridiculous ability with the ball in hand. the trouble is, they are an endagered species because they will all cost you as many (if not more) tries as they will create due to being poor on defence because of their size.

very good quality of rugby (20tries or so in 4games), considering its knock-out competition so we coulda had 4games of boring ping-pong-rugby

so to ppl arguing SH rugby is better, take a look at the highlights and think again

but we can all agree its quality rugby, and hope we watch the same style of play at thr RWC in NZ

Spot on, my thoughts exactly. I've been taking some time out to watch some S14 rugby, and to me, it's no different really to NH rugby...in my mind, the only real difference is that you see slightly less silly errors in S14, e.g. less knock-ons, basic handling errors, missed/forward passes etc. But otherwise, its the same, and as you said, the theory that close cup games descend into kick-fests was thrown out the window this weekend!

Bit harsh I think. The guys on here joking about Williams are only doing so BECAUSE Williams is such a legendary player, to see a relative underdog (in career terms) like Ngwenya do him on the outside like that is pretty incredible. People aren't bagging Williams and saying he's rubbish, it's just good to see someone get one over on a legend. Take JSD's try against the Baa-Baas for England in 2002 - he blasted past Jonah Lomu and stepped Percy Montgomery. Now, JSD hasn't achieved nearly as much as Lomu or Monty, but that try is still pretty amazing because of the calibre of the players he beat.

Can I just say, is it just me or does this try remind me of how Rory Underwood would score many of his tries - blasting down the touchline, inches away from being in touch? Ugo Monye needs to watch this video and learn that you can't just be blessed with raw pace - you have to know how to use it, as Zee shows here :)

S14 is faster, rucks are cleared quicker, there's better handling.
The hits are harder too.
But this was an amazing try very good.

i suppose he means that the lions are supposed to be the best of 4 nations...so technically they should be more talented...wouldnt you agree? i mean its statistics isnt it... you could say on average each team: 15 players, 8 are worth 10 points, and 7 are worth 9 points...you hope that when selecting baa baas or lions etc, you selected from each nation the 10 point people...therefore making a team which is more skilled......whether in reality its the same or whether it counts to anything is another matter....

i dont think its particularly bitter as such...

anyway, this guy has some gas!!!

I don't get the people ripping on Shane though. I mean, the guy's 33 and still tearing defences inside-out. There aren't many backs in the world who get to that age and still manage to do that. He's obviously gonna be losing a yard of pace as he gets on a bit.

Ngwenya burning past Habana at the height of his career thus far, in my mind, is a far more impressive feat than him outpacing a 33 year old nearing the end of his career who's nowhere near as fast as he once was.

Why? Cuz they lost, that's all that matters.
And as good as these games were, and they were very entertaining spectacles, compared to the S14 the rucks are still slower, the play isn't as expansive or tactically intelligent (very few dummy runners for one thing) and the hits aren't as brutal.
Still great to watch and some great talent on display.
But I wouldn't fool myself into thinking this is the best rugby in the world, that'll just result in more losses for European national sides.
