New Zealand Maori vs New Zealand Barbarians thriller

New Zealand Maori played against a New Zealand Barbarians side this weekend ahead of their upcoming internationals. It was an open game with plenty of running and an exciting finish so if you don’t know the result yet, skip to the video now to avoid the spoiler.

The Maori side were wearing a specially designed centenary celebration jersey that encompasses their history and culture and started the game with a rousing rendition of their haka.

The Barbarians side comprised of up-and-coming fringe New Zealand players, as well as touring Ireland squad member Damien Varley.

While the match was scrappy at times, with little intensity up front, the running rugby was at times breathtaking, right up till the last minute when winger Hosea Gear crossed for what was the match winning try. It ended 37-31 to the New Zealand Maori.

Keep a lookout for two classic tries in particular from Colin Slade and then the great team effort that was eventually finished by Hayden Triggs.

Luke McAlister kicked three conversions and a penalty for the Maori, showing good form leading up to their games against Ireland on June 18th, and England on June 23rd.

why do folk always say "he looks 12" why not "13" or "11" or some age closer to is actual age ... that cultural evolution for you. It just got into the minds of people and thats just what you say. Im pretty sure Richard Dawkins would say its a meme. A self replicating unit spread by communication, instead of reproduction (like genes) It is useful in society for teaching new things and for learning but in this case its a pretty useless but nontheless powerfull meme.

Just a note, Tom Court wasn't on this team - he was brought into the Irish set up on the bench after John Hayes pulled out.

Mike - it was Colin Slade. He normally plays fullback for the Crusaders. Very handy player, but will never get game time at 10 ahead of Carter or the new kid on the block - Cruden, and will never play for the All Blacks at 15 ahead of Mils or Dagg.

A lot of talent in New Zealand.

Mils is rubbish. He should try his chances at 12. Benson Stanley really looks like a solid backup to Nonu though, he doesn't make the stupid errors Nonu does and compliments Carter and Smith perfectly, really allowing the both of them to attack. Where as Nonu limits the both of them attacking.

I was meaning Colin Slade should try his chances at 12, Mils has passed it and with Jane being a backup fullback to Israel Dagg, he will never wear an All Black jersey again.

Slade should be the understudy to DC, not Cruden. His boot is much better and doesn't have the defensive problems that Cruden does. Ranger should be in the ABs, one of the world's best line-breakers at the moment. I would put him in for Guildford, I just don't think Guildford scares anyone with ball in hand at test level.

Gear doesnt score at the end, his hand is blocking the middle of the ball from touching down and he gets up before the back of the ball can cross the line.

Fair question Anon. In the past the eligibility was interpreted a bit loosely at times but ironically as the number of 100% Maoris has dwindled to pretty well none due to intermarriage, the qualification process has got stricter. According to the NZRFU website: "in the event a player is considered for selection, the team’s kaumatua, or cultural advisor, will trace the player’s whakapapa, or genealogy, to confirm his heritage and eligibility." And yes there are plenty of fair-headed maori.

I agree ... except for the missed out question mark and the misspelling of "that's" in the first sentence. The missed apostrophes in "that's", "I'm" and "it's". Also the missed full stop after "(like genes)" and the incorrect spelling of "nonetheless" and "powerful".

I wouldn't mind seeing the NZ Maori play as an independent team in the world cup, but I doubt NZ could financially support two national teams.

In other words, it'll probably never happen.

Probably a combination of the fact that their knick-name is the Baa-baas, and that NZ has about 40 million sheep. At least it's jumping in the air so it's a lively little critter.
