The History of Rugby - Parts 6 & 7

It's time to continue the History of Rugby series with another two parts that should both fascinate and enlighten the avid rugby fan. While the popularity of the last posting seemed to drop slightly, I hope that as we get to more recent and familiar times, things should pick up again and everyone can find some enjoyment in the clips.

In these two parts there's a few classic tries. The first comes in 1963 when British & Irish Lions back Richard Sharpe scored an incredible solo try for England when playing against Scotland.

In 1965 New Zealand rugby took a stance against Apartheid when they cancelled their tour of South Africa after making a policy to select Maori players. In 1966, they hosted the touring British Lions with a clean sweep of four from four. The All Blacks then toured Britain in 1967, remaining undefeated.

The 1960/1970 tour of South Africa to the UK was one met with staunch opposition as the political situation led to demonstrators making themselves heard throughout the tour.

Anti-Apartheid activists were out in force when they played both Oxford and Scotland, and perhaps their was some consolation for them as the Springboks lost both games, and then lost to England too.

The last game of the tour was the most entertaining in terms of a spectacle as they played and beat the Barbarians with some fantastic tries being scored by both teams.

The seventies was an incredible era for Welsh rugby as we see them winning their first Grand Slam in nineteen years in 1971. Barry John, Gareth Edwards, JPR Williams, and a whole host of other stars later became Lions legends, which we'll see in the next few parts of the series.

  • Post some better videos. Where are the big hits, best tries and mistakes? Where are the Friday Funnies and the Midweek Madness videos? Make more RBTS videos. There's enough big hits to keep making them. This site has gotten so boring over the last year.

  • Anonymous you are a fool, I for one love watching the old free flowing rugby without all the attention to structure. Some great stepping too!

Can someone explain to me the phrase "they're at 6's and 7's"

Is it a reference to flankers?

  • Clips like this are good but RD doesn't post the entertaining clips which they used to.

Also, I like this little series. I wonder where they've found all this old footage; I'd be interested in watching an old game from 1960's or earlier.

  • 3:00-3:06 of the second video - is that really how quickly scrums used to form? Jaysus!!

By Anonymous rectum? damn near killed 'em, at July 21, 2010 4:13 am

  • @Anonymous whinger, those clips are still posted, you just expect them daily, which is impossible.

In the past when those were posted the site wasn't updated as often. So there would be 2 entertaining clips out of 5, per week for example. Now, there's maybe 2 entertaining of of 10, because of the regular updates covering everything. I believe that leads you to think the site is less entertaining.

Anyway, how can one moan about being able to see this unique and rare footage?? It's a cool series that if you're a true rugby fan, you should appreciate.

I dont comment often these days, but thats my two cents.
    Thanks Rugbydump

Not really. I see none of the Midweek Madness or Friday Funny vids. Now there's just highlights, bans and clips like these. Fair enough.I'm not complaining about this video (or others). I'm just asking for the purely entertaining vids back.

Maybe the main seasons are over, but there's always rugby going on. The Top 14 and Super 14 finals were on May 29th. The summer internationals began on May 30th and went until the June 26th. Currie Cup friendlies began on 25th June. The TriNations began on the 10th of July and the Currie Cup Round One on the 9th. That's one hell of a packed off season.

Funny how you are calling me a child for voicing my opinions. I didn't insult anyone. I didn't insult you. Please grow up and take the stick out of your ass. And check the rugby fixtures and aware yourself about the ongoing tournaments and friendlies.

  • That's funny, take a look at the 'Latest Posts' list on the side and you'll see both a Friday Funny clip and a Midweek Madness posting. There's also those Plays of the Week, which are always good for a laugh. I'm not sure what it is you're after 'Anonymous'.

And yes, you insulted the website, randomly. A free website. Maybe you should consider contributing like others do, rather than just complain?

  • The modern game could learn something from how quickly the scrums are formed.
Also, some of the tries in the '60s show how far the game has come - It's just hacking around in some of them..

    Really?

This site has gotten so boring over the last year.

Sounds pretty insulting to me, especially when it's mostly one guy (with contributers helping out time to time) presenting you all these clips and stories for free. Sounds to me like grounds enough to call you an ungrateful child.

I just see a Midweek Madness. Perhaps you are looking at the "Friday Funnies & Midweek Madness" tab. Those vids are pretty old (e.g. the first one listed at this time was posted in March) and there's been plenty of rugby since then. What I'm after is more of these vids, as I said originally.

I view it as constructive criticism (assuming you are referring to me calling the site boring, can't see what else in can be seen as an insult). I was hoping the accompanying comments might have made that more obvious. Perhaps you view it as an insult. I was hoping people wouldn't but just in case, I said that I didn't insult anyone.

"The Top 14 and Super 14 finals were on May 29th."

RD has posted clips from both of those games, what's your point? (And the summer tours).

My point was in response to another user saying that the main seasons were over. I was saying how much rugby had been going on this summer despite it not being the "main season". I thought saying "that's one hell of a packed off season" as well as listing the following matches / tournaments would make that obvious.

Sounds pretty insulting to me, especially when it's mostly one guy (with contributers helping out time to time) presenting you all these clips and stories for free. Sounds to me like grounds enough to call you an ungrateful child.

I hadn't insulted anybody until I was insulted (these posts are listed in chronological order, look at the times under each post). My response was hardly an insult anyway. Not that it really matters.

It's an opinion. As said above, it was not meant as an insult. I feel the site has gotten boring. I guess I could have said that the site is not as entertaining as it used to be. Either way, same message and the original phrase is hardly insulting (perhaps to a particularly sensitive individual it might be).

Also, most of these clips are available on Youtube. Many are taken from the Youtube accounts of other people / groups (e.g. irb, curriecup2010) so they can be viewed off RD. What made this site attractive (for me anyway) was the funny vids and the big hits, particularly the compilations. If vids like these aren't being posted then I don't see why people wouldn't just go to Youtube. Once again, this isn't an insult.

  • If you want more of what you consider entertaining, then you have a few options. You could:

1)Request it in the requests section so that it's "moved to the front of the line", if you will.

2)Contribute to this site yourself by making such clips. As it's been stated, it's mostly just the site owner having to sift through the many hours of rugby each week while trying to think of new ideas for the site and get the interviews with world-class stars that appear here. Like you pointed out, the videos are embedded from Youtube, so it wouldn't be hard for you to get the software to edit clips and make one of your own, then post it online for us all to enjoy.

I get that you're trying to "offer constructive criticism", but demanding that the site post some better videos because it has gotten so boring is not a great way to get what you want.

I will make a post in the request section.

As for contributing, unfortunately I'm in full time education and work part time. Barely have time to watch matches these days let alone review them or clips of them and edit them. Regardless, these types of clips used to be posted on a regular basis. I don't see the problem with posting them once again. There have been plenty of new additions this year so hopefully RD might consider posting these vids regularly again.

Maybe the original statements were too blunt, but they were hardly aggressive. I'll be sure to use more impassive wording to avoid hurting peoples' feelings in the future.

  • @ James K, let me get in on this discussion.

I understand your point, but what another user said earlier is valid - the website is updated far more regularly now than it was in the past. Most days, for almost two years now, there's been at least a post a day. As someone else said, that's pretty challenging, and unfortunately I myself don't get out there on the field to make the magic happen. If nothing funny or entertaining takes place, it's pretty bloody difficult to pull it out my thumb.

Your opinion with 'post some better videos' is pretty insulting considering the time and effort that went into sourcing, editing, and writing about this history of rugby series. But no biggie, we all enjoy different things.

I haven't checked recent months, but in November I posted 51 posts. That's close to two posts a day. There's a helluva lot of work and time that goes into making that happen.

If you'd prefer having 8 posts in a month, with just your Friday Funnies and Midweek Madness clips, then I can try that out and spend all my time on making compilations etc. I dont see it as a recipe for success though.

And fyi, curriecup2010 on youtube - thats one of many RD accounts. You're welcome to head on over to youtube though to see what you can find. I can assure you, spending your time here will be a lot less painful.

Having said all that, I'll take your comments as constructive criticism and work on getting more lighthearted, simple clips on here for you to enjoy.

    1) Who's forcing you to view the site everyday?

    2) How much content have you submitted?

    3) It is the off season in Europe, there is far less rugby currently being played. Yes everyone knows about the ITM/Currie Cups and the Tri Nations (1 game a week) but the fact of the matter is there is no Super 14, no Top 14, no Celtic League, no English Premiership, no Amlin, no HEC and the next IRB sevens event is in December.

Get a grip and quit your whining.

I'm not complaining about the frequency of your posts in general. The vids I mentioned used to be posted more often (once or twice a week perhaps) and I'm not sure why that changed. And entertaining things do happen e.g. numerous of big hits in the first Tri Nations match, legal tackles which didn't result in bans which are just great to watch.

I've already explained that. As I said, I could have worded it better but no need to get insulted.

I have already began to spend more time watching the videos at Youtube than RD. I prefer the way this site used to be which is why I decided to say what I said.

Thank you and I am sorry if I insulted you. It was not meant as that.

Nobody. I wouldn't want to be forced to view any site. I would prefer to view a site because I enjoy it's content. I used to enjoy the content of RD much more because nobody else made vids like RD and I was hoping that might change.

None. As said, full time student with par time job. Besides, I don't own the site. I don't see messages encouraging users to generate content. Perhaps that might be a good idea. I am merely criticising the site in the hope that it will bring good.

I acknowledged earlier that it is the off season, but there is still much rugby going on.

I have got a grip thank you. If you don't ever complain, nothing ever happens. I'm sure in one way or another the comments were appreciated even if the original statements were too blunt.

As I said, I can update the site less frequently and focus on compilations, or I can provide a place for rugby fans to visit daily with fresh content.

In an ideal world, I would have employees so that both bases are covered. I'm working on that side of things too though - as this is a business after all - hence less time for the type of clips that you're obviously after.

  • You obviously need a trip to see the optician as RD regularly asks for contributions and requests.

I don't see anything asking visitors to generate content and send it to RD to post. I do see something about posting requests which I already said that I would do (perhaps you should read what I say more carefully), however, that is not generating content. Maybe I'm missing something, if so point it out.

What I come for (well I don't come so often anymore) is those clips. They aren't here as often any longer so I now prefer to use other sites and Youtube as what is being done now is not unique to this site. I personally am not getting more value than ever I'm sorry to say. I would very much appreciate it if this could change in the future. Maybe it won't. Maybe it will.

There may be a balance to be struck between posting the informative / highlights videos and purely entertaining videos / compilations. Perhaps you should spend more time focusing on other videos. But this is your site, it's up to you of course and you know more about the time needed do do such things than I do. I'm just offering a visitors perspective.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 22, 2010 5:55 pm

  • As I said, these clips still do get posted when possible, it's just that nowadays there are loads more clips being posted in general, so they tend to drown out the ones that I think you're referring to. Regardless though, do you have any idea how difficult it is to come up with a Friday Funny of high standard EACH and every week?

In fact, if you think that these so called amazing and entertaining clips exist but deliberately aren't being posted on RD, then sign up on the forum and post the links whenever you find them on youtube. Problem solved?

By Anonymous Greiffel, at July 22, 2010 6:31 pm

  • PS: This has turned into a discussion on the History of RD instead of the History of Rugby. I personally think these historical clips are great and can't really understand why some don't enjoy learning more about where the game came from.

I don't. And I'm not asking specifically for a Friday Funny. You managed to post them often enough before. As I said before, "you know more about the time needed to do such things than I do. I'm just offering a visitors perspective. "

I didn't say amazing and entertaining clips existed. I said that RD used to post them and that is what made RD unique and why I came to RD.

As I said before, I am commenting on the lack of entertaining vids, not the quality of the current ones.

People seem to keep missing the point so here it is:

RD used to post purely entertaining videos on a more regular basis (e.g. compilations, Friday Funnies, Midweek Madness, highlights of certain players, etc.). They are no longer posted with such frequency and I was hoping they might be posted with that same frequency in the future if possible.

I've said what I had to say. Do what you want. If you do more vids like that I'm sure more people will come. If you get offended I don't really mind. If you don't do anything different I don't mind as I can get vids elsewhere. If you post entertaining vids, I'll be happy because I can't get them elsewhere. At the end of the day, I don't lose out and you only stand to gain more visitors.

    Yours faithfully
    James K.

  • Okay so we've established that you're not willing to contribute, and seem to think that these great videos you talk about DO actually still exist elsewhere, but RD refuses to post them. Gotcha.

This doesn't really make sense to me. I'm not sure if there's a typo somewhere? If you don't do anything different I don't mind as I can get vids elsewhere. If you post entertaining vids, I'll be happy because I can't get them elsewhere

I tried to explain to you about the numbers earlier - more videos are being posted now than in the past. So if there's 50 videos in a month, there may only be 10 'entertaining' ones, whereas in the past maybe only 30 videos were posted in a month, so the 10 entertaining made it seem like the site had more variety. See my point?

Yeah there was a bit of a typo. I wasn't 100% sure if it was clear. Here's what I meant:

The type of videos currently being posts (e.g. highlights, bans, plays of the week, etc.) are available elsewhere. The videos that are purely for entertainment are not available elsewhere. So no, I'm not saying they are elsewhere and RD refuse to post them: "I didn't say amazing and entertaining clips existed. I said that RD used to post them and that is what made RD unique and why I came to RD."

I see your point, but I'm not sure it's correct. I'm not talking about the ratio of entertaining vids to informative vids. I'm talking about the frequency with which entertaining vids used to be posted. It used to be once or twice a week, sometimes more. Now they're less frequent.

Anyway, I just intended to clear up my confusing comment. You seem to keep missing the point and / or ignoring what I say (where it's clear) so I think I'm going to finish now.

I hope you return the individuality to your site.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the video, RD. Don't waste your time trying to rationalize with people who don't care/keep repeating themselves.

This series adds some variety to the site (much like the behind the scenes of the Lions tour video posted months back, or the preview for the BO movie), so that's great in-of-itself. I also got a kick out of watching these old-time videos and I learned some things about the history of the game.

Like you said, there's no reason to complain about any of that, so thanks again.

Not what I was complaining about. You completely missed the point.

"RD used to post purely entertaining videos on a more regular basis (e.g. compilations, Friday Funnies, Midweek Madness, highlights of certain players, etc.). They are no longer posted with such frequency and I was hoping they might be posted with that same frequency in the future if possible."

Find these clips you speak of and submit them. Until then, put a sock in it please?

    Good reading skills:

"The videos that are purely for entertainment are not available elsewhere."

"If you post entertaining vids, I'll be happy because I can't get them elsewhere."

"I didn't say amazing and entertaining clips existed."

Funny how I make valid points and people ignore them and reply to shit I didn't say because you all know I'm right. RD is now a generic site. Nothing to differentiate it from other rugby blog sites or Youtube. As I said though, it's win win for me.

And all those who feeling calling a site boring is highly offensive, grow some balls. Thought this place was visited mainly by men.

  • Okay 'James K', you've made your point. Please use a nickname in future so that it's easier to identify comments when replying to them.

In future if you'd like to raise a concern or have a complaint, it would be appreciated if it was done in a polite manner. That way you probably won't get such a hostile response.

    Cheers
