Three skilful tries from Rugby World Cup 2003

There's 335 days left till the 2011 World Cup kicks off in New Zealand so over the course of the next year, Rugbydump will be featuring random matches, incidents, and other clips that aren't already in the archive as a lead up to the tournament.

Today we've got this video that's been put together by the official Rugby World Cup website as it features three of the best tries from the 2003 tournament in Australia.

The first of the three tries featured is a personal favourite as Norman Ligairi of Fiji, now with La Rochelle in France, who pulled off an incredible pick up at high speed on the way to the tryline against Japan.

The next is Joe Rokocoko crossing against the Springboks after King Carlos Spencer - currently doing a great job as assistant coach at the Lions in the Currie Cup - worked his magic with the through-the-legs ball close to the line.

One of the best tries scored in World Cup rugby is saved for last as Shane Williams set up Stephen Jones for a try out of the top drawer against England. Three classic tries ahead of the weekend. Enjoy.

  • well technically destiny, u are second, and im afraid to say that second is not first, in fact in this case it is the first looser so you can have your first but in a different context

  • I'm convinced that one day I'll be interviewing someone for a job and they'll have listed among their achievements 'commenting first on a RD video'. Sad. Bet we've all done it once though.

  • Outstanding try from wales. Easily the most exciting UK (& Ireland) team when they put it together.

  • Who wrote the text for this? Not that it matters because the tries truly are superb but they are all from the 1999 RWC in Australia, not the 2003 tournament which was actually in France.

  • ^ are you joking??

99 was in Wales/UK. Aus in 2003, and France in 2007.

  • The Stephen Jones try is fantastic. And i'm English. What a try to score in a world cup game. One of the best world cup tries ever?

By Anonymous Easy, at October 09, 2010 3:24 am

  • But Phil, would you take it into consideration? It does involve dedication, very fast typing skills and certain degree of computer literacy.

By Anonymous Bosh, at October 09, 2010 3:28 am

  • Bosh - it also requires commitment...lots of time refreshing the website, hoping for a new post.

I would have liked to have seen Robinson and Williams play together - that would have been good to watch.

The Fijians can score magical tries - that one against France by Caucau in 1999 was amazing.

  • King Carlos. That is all.

  • As an Englishman, i am sad to agree that the Stephen Jones try is indeed one of the best world cup tries ever!

By Anonymous David, at October 09, 2010 3:43 pm

  • Gotta love that stephen jones try

  • T'was a great try by the Welsh - they always seem to be able to pull things out the bag like that.

    It's a shame they're not more consistant.

  • King Carlos, the jackal, the playmaker.

  • Phil said... I'm convinced that one day I'll be interviewing someone for a job and they'll have listed among their achievements 'commenting first on a RD video'. Sad. Bet we've all done it once though.

    Nope.

  • Jones try was a magic one - although painful as an England supporter...Can't wait for the next world-cup..

I think one of the best tries scored in a WC was the 2007 one when Tonga were at least 1 man down against South Africa and went the length of the field in short, fast phases to score! That might be because I have Tongan family though!

  • Spencer you are the KING.
