Waratahs give the Melbourne Rebels an early wake-up call
Another busy weekend has come to an end so while we try to bring you the best clips from around the world of rugby, here’s a start with short highlights from the Melbourne Rebels’ first ever game in Super Rugby, a heavy 43-0 loss to the New South Wales Waratahs.
In their first season, the Melbourne Rebels were given a harsh wake up call as the scratch side will now realise what they’re up against. While they started well early on, things soon went downhill as the Waratahs, who by all accounts look the strongest Australian team, showed their class with top performances from their Wallabies.
The likes of Kurtley Beale, Drew Mitchell, and Berrick Barnes were simply too much for the tournament newcomers, who had former England flyhalf Danny Cirpriani make an early appearance off the bench that was forced through injury.
Starting flyhalf James Hildendorf is out for six weeks with a shoulder injury, center Cooper Vuna injured his shoulder, while flanker Hoani Macdonald broke bones in his hand.
Despite the seven try drubbing, coach Rod Macqueen has tried to remain positive after seeing some signs during the game that he can work with in the next few weeks.
"I've got a fair bit of faith in a lot of the good things they did there to say that we will be competitive this year," he said.
"You can't go away from the fact you're going to be judged on the scoreboard. But as coaches we can see some light at the end of the tunnel there."
Please note that Rugbydump is not a paid for highlights channel, so every match will not be shown. Where possible though, certain games will be featured, but the focus will always be to bring you the best incidents and moments from around the rugby world.

who did people from victoria support before the rebels arrived? must be hard to change allegiances if they supported an aussie team from one of the other states
By Anonymous, at February 20, 2011 9:25 pm
1st!!!

What a damn good player Drew Mitchell has becomed, he must be the on form winger in world rugby right now. Also very good to see old Stirling back on the pitch.
Also, I was thinking the 9-10-12 of Genia, Cooper and Barnes works perfectly well, maybe Giteau will have to sweat it to get a gold shirt!
And magnificent crowd. Except for the 'Canes-Highlanders game, every match in this first round drew good crowds. Let's keep the support going!
Cheers

These guys are almost as clinical as Leinster
By TheRealist, at February 20, 2011 10:22 pm
^^^^^ ok get lost pal.
By VictorSoCalRuggger, at February 20, 2011 10:31 pm
@ TheRealist, Leinster are shit.
Tahs,Bulls,Stormers,Crusaders,Blues would destroy them... No contest.
By Anonymous, at February 20, 2011 11:08 pm
@Juggernaute: 1 super rugby game and Mitchel is the best winger in the world? Wow, you sound like an Australian sports journalist.
That's a comment straight from the Greg Martin school of muppetry.

i watched some of the games this weekend, lots of errors. Is it usually like that or just because it was the first round?
By Nathan, at February 20, 2011 11:12 pm
Hahahahaha Cipriani is gonna get smashed week in week out now.
By JerrysBiceps, at February 20, 2011 11:26 pm
I agree leinster would run the S15 teams off the park.
By Anonymous, at February 20, 2011 11:27 pm
1. RD thanks for everything you do, but why would you prefer to put up one-off incidents than highlights?
2. Anyone who says 'X from SH would destroy Y from NH', or vice versa, is a fucking fool. You're spouting nothing but an opinion because club sides from the S15 don't play sides from the HC, and no one knows what would happen.
By Anonymous, at February 20, 2011 11:42 pm
Bloody hell we couldn't even make 10comments with people feeling the need to argue.
By Anonymous, at February 20, 2011 11:59 pm
Hcup champion VS S15 champion, this is what would give an end to this debate.
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 12:14 am
I thought the Rebels played pretty well the first 30 or so minutes.
Even though they lost 43-0 I'm keen to see the Rebels do well. Hope they take this game as a lesson and improve in the future.
Great to see Mortlock back in the game after being out for so long.
Some of the games were a bit scrappy, like the Force vs Reds game. I'd put it down to first round nerves lol
Go the Tahs!! :P

Lots of anonymous posts here tonight, ladies.

Sorry, forgot to mention:
Thanks for the post, RD!
43-0 is quite the spanking, but Waratahs are a pretty quality side, so the Rebels shouldn't take it too hard.
By alf, at February 21, 2011 1:03 am
I love the competitiveness of Super Rugby
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 1:34 am
whats with all these card happy SH refs? I mean 2 cards in 6 minutes for a tiny bit of push and shove...
...geez, what is with this soccer attitude you guys have adopted..
on a side note, I do look forward to Danny Cipriani getting destroyed week in week out...
Kurtley Beale...yeup, we know he is great...but how f*cking great was he that game...
I know its always a temptation to take club performances into internationals....and ofcourse this being an opening game I think the rebels were always going to be in for a 'welcome to the real world' sort of game. But Beale's awareness and pace is definately going to be something to watch over the next few years (and the WC)
By Resident Troll, at February 21, 2011 2:29 am
This Wartahs team has one of the deadliest backliens int he game at the moment.
They;ve got several players would petentially make a World XV.
Their back three is Drew Mitchell, Lachlan Turner and Kurtley Beale.
They've got a Wallaby halves combination in Burgess and Barnes and their centres are both junior wallabies.
Tries are gonna eb no problem for them this year.
And please don't compare the Wartahs to Leinster. Mitchell, Beale and Turner are a different class to LEinster's backline.
By Tom, at February 21, 2011 4:00 am
Damn what an embarrassing start to the season!
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 4:01 am
I want to bathe in a bathtub of waratah semen!!!!
By Tom, at February 21, 2011 4:24 am
That's your mum's job isn't it?
By Tom, at February 21, 2011 4:43 am
Yeah Tom, all that "talent" in their backline, yet they couldn't score a single try against the Stormers in either round robbin game or the Semi-final last year.
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 4:44 am
Cipriani can't get in the starting team of a side that's going down by 50?
Definitely not the answer for England (probably ever). I sense Gavin Henson II - lots of hype, little substance........
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 6:48 am
Tough loss, but it's the first game against a really good team. The only way you get better is by playing the good teams. The wins will come.
By Hendrick, at February 21, 2011 8:06 am
To the genius who made the sarcastic "1 super rugby game and Mitchel is the best winger in the world?" comment - actually' he's been consistently good for the past 18 months or so. Watch the game and then form an opinion. Otherwise you end up sounding pretty damn silly.

'Hahahahaha Cipriani is gonna get smashed week in week out now'
Beat me to it. I've give it 3 weeks and he crying his way to the airport and getting the early flight back to the UK. Although with Hanks gone at Wasps no one will employ him.
By Nick, at February 21, 2011 11:23 am
'Cipriani racing out of the line' or as it's also known avoiding the contact at all costs.
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 11:44 am
I hope Cipriani gets smashed week in week out, it'll toughen him up and do him some good
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 11:55 am
Its great to see even wingers maul like that!
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 12:39 pm
'I hope Cipriani gets smashed week in week out, it'll toughen him up and do him some good.'
I know what you mean I'm just not convinced he's got it in him to stick with it. When he knew he was off to the rebels his form ran hot and cold for Wasps and it seems like he's been up to his usual games in Melbourne. It wouldn't suprise me if he has a few stinkers at 10 then calls it quits.
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 1:23 pm
This is true, but you would think after all his talk of 'a new start' he'll ride it out
By Anonymous, at February 21, 2011 1:56 pm
Leinsters class isnt their back 3, its their centres, half backs and mobile backrow that give them the offloading game.
We could have pensioners for our back three to run onto our offloads. (Nacewa would walk into almost any team in the world on current form on a side note)
By AnEyeForTheGame, at February 21, 2011 2:30 pm
Card happy SH refs....
By Jonno, at February 21, 2011 3:17 pm
Last try was the best!
Do you guys think there might be a Champions League with rugby with the best clubs playing? Problems with calendar? I'd like to watch it.
By tb, at February 21, 2011 3:37 pm
Yeah Anon, I guess you've been on the moon for the last year or so, or you'd understand that Mitchell's form has been carrying and developing constantly. And, btw, I'm not austalian, a Saffer or a Kiwi.
On a side note, Genia, Cooper, Barnes, Horne, O'Connor, Beale, Mitchell... Now that's a WC champion's backline
By Juggernauter, at February 21, 2011 5:16 pm
The SH never gets beaten by the NH. whether it's international matches or if it was club!
The only time the NH has beaten the SH is when we just test out new young players!

Yeh except the teams were depleted through injuries!!!! And filled with second or third choice players!!!
By Tom, at February 21, 2011 10:21 pm
"Yeah Tom, all that "talent" in their backline, yet they couldn't score a single try against the Stormers in either round robbin game or the Semi-final last year"
Valid point, the Stormers won the forward battle and didn't give the Waratahs a chance to get the ball to their backline.
By Tom (the real one, not that c*nt above^), at February 21, 2011 10:47 pm
@ Juggernauter I agree and would have said Hosea Gear Or Drew Mitchell are the form wingers atm.
I'm a saffer and happy to admit those 2 have come on leaps and bounds past Habana and JP.
Mitchell seems to have this ability to brush off tacklers with alot of ease.
Great player to watch
By Chudnofski, at February 22, 2011 5:35 am
Add Rene Ranger to that list of form wingers.
Hopefully, from a Saffa point of view, we'll say the same thing for Lwasi Mvovo soon.
By katman, at February 22, 2011 10:19 am
Tbh, I just can't appreciate anything with talent that Isn't from the SH. I suppose it's because of my swollen pride. I know it makes me look like a cock. I wish it didn't because I am a really nice guy and I just want to be liked by everyone on here. It's just hard when you know how players gel with their surrounding players! I know johnny wilkinson and BOD back in their day were amazing players but because they aren't from the SH it means they aren't as good, so I couldn't 'pick' them for my fantasy XV..
By Tom, at February 22, 2011 2:03 pm
19 points during that yellow card spell in the second period. Watch and learn Scotland!
By Guy, at February 22, 2011 4:08 pm
Haha, I'm a bitter NH fan who constantly impersonates other people on this site.
Instead of offering opinions or arguments of my own, it's easier to impersonate other people.
It makes me feel good about myself.
By The guy who always uses other people's names and pretends to be them., at February 22, 2011 11:09 pm
^^good for you..
By Anonymous, at February 23, 2011 2:44 am
10, 11, 12, 14 tries a year.
Good old Aussie counting
