Ronan O'Gara and Munster snatch victory from Leinster at Thomond Park

Points machine Ronan O’Gara kicked Munster to a 24-23 victory over Leinster in their Magners League meeting at Thomond Park. They remain top of the table after the rivals battled it out for eighty minutes in a closely fought affair.

A last gasp penalty by O’Gara denied Leinster of a famous victory in Limerick, despite them scoring the only try of the match, a top quality team try that was finished well by wing Shane Horgan.

Munster had been 20-9 down at half time but managed to get back into the game with O’Gara taking his opportunities and remaining ice cool when the big moment arose.

The win for Munster leaves them 12 points clear of second place Ulster.

O’Gara had a bad black eye after the game from a knock, but will be fit for Munster’s Amlin Challenge Cup quarter final against Brive this coming weekend.

"You only have to look at their home record, some of the teams they've beaten - Stade Francais, Clermont, Perpignan, Toulon - to see its going to be a tough assignment for us," said O’Gara.

"They're a typical French side, they take pride in their home performance, their supporters expect that, so it's going to be massive task for us to win there."

Below are short highlights from the match. You can also view the kick and an interview with O'Gara from after the match here.

  • We were overwhelmed in the 1st half, we didn't seem to know what game we wanted to play. Also, Leinster were really sharp. But physicality, and Pauly's favourite phrase, Manic Aggression put Leinster under the cosh after the break, and there's no better man to kick those pressure penalties. Top man is ROG.

  • Highlights don't really show what great match it was. Whatever other problems Ireland have going into the world cup (potentially one more with O'Connell's ankle) they can heart in the fact that they've two world class out half both playing out of their skin at the moment.

  • why doesnt BBC show the time during the match?

  • Congrats Munster. Great, great comeback. We should have known what Munster were capable of. Out of all the teams in the world who could do that, it's Munster.

It's good to know Munster aren't as stranded as they were made out to be and can still beat the best club teams! You have some quality youths on the way and already there. Felix Jones, Duncan Williams, Murray (the scrum half). The current state of Irish rugby is great but its future looks even better. Perhaps we might be able to finally beat the ABs in the next 5 years.

  • Should have gotten highlights from RTE.... Commentator in those BBC highlights is just awful!

Good win for Munster. Thought we had it in the bag but I suppose there's only so many games you can win against Munster! O'Gara and Sexton.....if only Ireland could play two 10's!

  • Considering how good of a game it was, (the intensity and physicality was great to watch) better more in depth highlights would be much appreciated...not complaining just merely a request

  • how on earth was that coming in from the side at the end? he went straight through, not from the side.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 12:08 am

  • If he'd done Darcy for off his feet understandable.. but in the side? Dodgey in my opinion.

  • Is that BOD having another Cry, when does that fat drama queen actualy shut up and play rugby?

So so happy Muster won, what a club.

  • ^ welcome to 2001 mate. since then it's been all rugby from BOD.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 1:13 am

  • Munster haven't scored a try against Leinster in over eight hrs of playing time... just saying ;)

  • Ronan O'Gara kicking all the points with a black eye....sounds about right

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 1:29 am

  • darcy was in the side at the end. i think to have come through the middle he would have had to go through warrick it looks like (no.22), but he went straight into tuitupu

  • "hes been there, hes got the t-shirt" interesting commentary

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 1:43 am

  • I'm a massive BOD fan, I think the guy is a great player/captain etc, but LOL that he got a yellow.... Still wonder if the ref will ever yellow Sir Richie...?

It's quite a shock and shows the severe indiscipline that Ireland will have to cut out when we see a team score over 20 points from kicks.... I didn't see the game were they all penalties or some drop goals? We all see close games where the score is like 9 - 12 or something but that amount of kickable penalties will ruin Ireland against the big teams! As it did in the 6N!!

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at April 07, 2011 2:09 am

  • From the side? I don't think so. He came "through the gate". Have a look where the feet of the players in the ruck are. He went inside them.
Great to see the ref deciding the outcome of a great game with a suspect call, yet again. What a twirp. When will refs realise we pay pay to see the players play not the refs blow their whistles!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 2:33 am

  • Yeah I think the 'from the side' call at the end was questionable. Why O'Gara wasn't lining up fro a drop at goal before that I'll never understand.

Did anyone from Cork watch the interview with Rog? His Limerick accent is unbleeble!

  • what a rat can't kick half the year

By Blogger tiernana, at April 07, 2011 10:50 am

  • That was a cracking game, it's bizarre that there was only one try in it. The intensity and physicality was at a level at least on a par with the 6-Nations. Munster looked dead and buried after the first half, and the game was in the balance until the very last play. First rate sports entertainment, that is.

Leinster are the better side right now for sure - Munster's midfield is a mess. Sammy Tuitupou (sp?) is a tank, but he hasn't gelled with the backline the way that we need. I'd be very pleased if the rumours about Conrad Smith were realised and we saw him turning out for Munster next season. I really think he'd fit in with the Munster ethos too.

  • PS - funny to see BOD binned, but that was a 'team' yellow. Leinster had been warned about slowing down the ball and that whoever was next to do it would be in the bin. Cue BOD having a nap over the ball...

That was one of the quietest games I've seen BOD play for ages - I wonder is he saving up something special for Leicester in the Heineken Cup quarters?

By Anonymous Mike, at April 07, 2011 11:30 am

  • They need to get the ball to sean o brien as he's running, he should be 8 (sorry heaslip) Great kick from O'gara at the end. Guess that's why he was votest best player of the Heinecup Cup the last 15 years - nerves of steel!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 2:04 pm

  • I think in fairness to Leinster - they'll go all the way in the HC this year.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 2:06 pm

  • brutal decision from the ref at the end, and throughout....
hope the ref does a good job this saturday,
dont understand why players can be cited for bad decisions and refs get away with it. look at some of the refs calls in the 6nations.....
    Cmon leinster....

By Blogger Ronan, at April 07, 2011 4:51 pm

  • Any chance of the video of the ref getting hit with the ball?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 07, 2011 5:22 pm

  • def in from the side. the gate is between the neck and hips....no doubt about it.

By Anonymous wispa, at April 08, 2011 8:29 pm

  • before the BOD yellow it is leinster players against one munster player, so they have to steal the bloody ball and not concede a penalty and a yellow card.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 12, 2011 11:15 am

  • "3 Leinster players" sorry
