South Africa win the London Sevens as NZ are crowned series champions

Record crowds turned out for the penultimate leg of the HSBC IRB Sevens World Series in London, with Twickenham bathed in sunshine for a fantastic weekend of top quality rugby action.

The first day of the event brought in a crowd of 54,357, a record in the 12 year history of the series. Fancy dress, beer, and the occasional streaker were the order of the day.

New Zealand did enough to be crowned outright series champions after hosts England failed to get out of their group, winning just one of their Pool games. New Zealand themselves were disappointing, being knocked out in a heavy defeat by Fiji, but their ninth series win reasserts their overall dominance since the series' inception.

Fiji impressed throughout, but coming up against South Africa in the final, they blew a 14 point lead as the men in green and gold fought back to outwit the larger opposition, and take a 24-14 win, their first in London since 2005.

Cecil Afrika was as inspirational as ever, and continues to lead the try scoring records for the season. It was the relatively unknown Stephen Hunt though who proved invaluable as he pulled off a brilliant try saving tackle late in the game, then scored the winner.

South Africa are now up to third on the overall standings with one leg to go, the 100th event in World Series history, which takes place in Edinburgh this coming weekend.

The following three videos give you a nice general view of the tournament, including what led up to the final, the final itself, Seven of the Best tries from the tournament, and a video that shows some of the record breaking crowd on day one.

  • just did that to deny the usual moronic "First"

  • A smiley face is on the same level as writing "first". It's still a pointless comment and still quite annoying.

Dissappointed with England's performance! Hopefully we can have a decennt tournament in Scotland to make sure we finish the series 2nd!

Stefan Armitage gave it a good go haha. We can build on what's been a very good season for next year and hopefully win more of the finals we're reaching.

NZ do seem unbeatable though when they're on top form but who knows, some of our new guys will have more experience and we might get a few new guys again.

  • "It's still a pointless comment and still quite annoying."

Pointless and annoying, just like 7s Rugby.

  • Trolls out in force!
Great Vids RD, always good to see what's going on in the world of 7's (after all, it is the vehicle that is being used to promote our beloved game to the rest of the world).

  • Great to see sevens get some more coverage and a bigger crowd.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 24, 2011 8:50 pm

  • Excellent highlights, thanks very much.

I'm English, however, and this sort of commentary makes me ashamed. They should be judging a knitting contest if they want to carry on like that.

  • Wow!

This is definitely going to be the best event in the Olympics.

And the good thing is: there is no designated winner!

    Thanks RD!!!!!

  • Clearly a lot of forwards on this site having a go at sevens as it requires a bit of fitness training...

Sevens is amazing good fun to watch and play, how could anyone not like it!

  • No highlights of the South African 7 man rolling maul in the final?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2011 12:30 am

  • The 7 man rolling maul was a stroke of sheer genius by Treu.

I can only hope that more coaches out there will start crafting more "Mad Scientist" type strategies. That Final was one of the best matches I have watched in many years.

Now, those of you saying they don't like 7s sound like the School yard dimwit saying he does not like quizzes.

The amount of fitness, speed, reaction and skill needed to play sevens makes for a very exciting spectacle.

  • we need full highlight of fiji destroying NZ even tho they won the championship

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2011 9:34 am

  • What a 7 man maul in 7's that not the ball game... THATS NOT 7's 'running' rugby, stupid south africa

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2011 9:37 am

  • seemed like once new zealand won the championship they couldnt be bothered with playing the rest of the tournament

I was actually at the tournament and was very impressed with the SA change of tactics to seal the win. Fiji were much bigger, but were stunned and unable to cope with the bokke close quarter tactics, well played by the green and gold.

That being said, the Fijians were magnificient and a joy to watch, this has to be the best rugby event I have ever been to. Multinational, all ages, lots of beautiful girls. Yes definitely doesn't compare to a scrum collapsing, grind it out international affair with the diverse crowd of males 34-64.

Agree NZ just looked like they gave up.

    Anyone see Canada play?

Too bad the Twick. PA system sucks so bad.

  • Wow that Fijian team looked like a real throw-back to the great Fijian sevens teams of yesteryear; tall, rangy, powerful, fast, very skillful and very instinctive. Haven't seen NZ blown away like that in quite a while......

  • I wanna see this 7 man rolling maul, any links?
