Argentina narrowly beat the French Barbarians at home

Argentina played the first of their two World Cup warm up games on Saturday against the French Barbarians, a team that is made up of some top French talent as well as a few players that play there, but are foreigners. The hosts won the first game 23-19.

The narrow victory came in part thanks to Captain Felipe Contepomi, who scored a try and kicked eight points as Argentina look to get their Rugby World Cup campaign on track, with a fair amount of fringe players looking to earn a ticket to New Zealand.

There were a number of Pampas players playing, which was good to see. If you don’t know Pampas are a team that took part in – and won – the Vodacom Cup tournament in South Africa last month.

The Barbarians side scored tries through Guillaume Bousses, Adrien Plante, and Gerhard Vosloo, while Argentina’s came through Genaro Fessia, Agustin Figuerola, and flyhalf Felipe Contepomi.

The two teams will meet again this coming weekend in the northern city of Resistencia, where the Pumas will apparently field an almost entirely different lineup.

Can someone explain me the difference between French Barbarians and "British" Barbarians? Are French Barbarians exclusively players from Top 14. And what about British Barbarians? Players from all over the world?

It's normally just Barbarians which is basically rest of the world against whatever team it is they play against. To be honest I hadn't seen 'French Barbarians' before and have never heard of British Barbarians, they have the British and Irish Lions which goes on tour every now and then.

Barbarians is an international team, anyone can be invited to play.
The french barbarians are either french playing abroad or international players playing in france.
south african and new-zelander barbarians also exist.

Yes, and the other difference is that french Barbarians still work as an amateur association.
Players are invited but not paid, so their games and the oppositions teams are not counted as caps.
As "British" Barbarians before, now got a piecework pay and counted as capes by the IRB.

I saw this game and got to say that the argentinean commentators are sickly in love with their team, but I'm afraid Argentina will lose heavily to England, tightly to Scotland and will be carried all the way by Romania and Georgia in the WC.

They haven't got any strenght in depth in key positions -like openside, fly half, centres, tight head and fullback- and there's absolutely no way they'll make as big an impact as in France in 2007.

Also, I don't want to sound gloomy but the Pampas team was formed with the best players from the local URBA competition and a couple internationals and professionals, and played against third south african teams all the competition, in a cup that's literally the third division in South Africa; you just had to see the final against the so called Blue Bulls to realize that all that squad were under 21s saffers and that the stands were almost empty, this in a country where school boys matches get atendances of 10,000.

I fear I sound pessimistic but boy, if you understood all the buzz and hype the argentinians have build around this team and what they have achieved you'd understand me.
