The Barbarians come up trumps against England at Twickenham

Second-half fight backs appear to be the flavour of the month, and the scriptwriters pulled out another cracker this weekend as a last minute Tim Visser try sealed a 38-32 win for the Barbarians over England at Twickenham.

It may have taken them a while to get going, but a Baa-Baas team that boasting over 500 caps had too much all-round class for an inexperienced England side who could not handle the confrontational visitors.

A try in the first 5 minutes for Henry Trinder following good work from Charlie Hodgson and Captain Luke Narraway got England off to a dream start; but the men in black and white hoops quickly responded through Frenchman Benoit Baby who danced through a defensive hole to cross for a converted score.

Ugo Money grabbed an opportunistic try for the hosts before James Simpson-Daniel scored England’s third score. There were shades of 2002 for Simpson-Daniel, who ran round Jonah Lomu in the same fixture nine years ago, when he stepped inside Ruan Pienaar to finish a spectacular score.

But just as England looked to be pulling away with the lead, Frederick Michalak intercepted Paul Hodgson's sloppy pass and raced away for an easy 5 points.

The second-half saw the Barbarians assert their dominance at the scrum and at the breakdown. Unable to hold on to the ball, England conceded a try to flying-Dutchman Tim Visser who collected Michalak's cross-kick to score. The Baa-Baas drew level when good hands put George Smith and Joe Van Niekerk over for further Barbarian scores.

England regained the lead when Exeter flanker Tom Johnson crossed for a try. But it was the Barbarians who had the last word as a great break from Joe Tekori and a deft offload from Van Niekerk allowed Visser to add a dramatic finish to an fascinating match.

  • That was a great game!

I reckon Johnson, Narraway and Bastareaud had good enough games to be in contention for their RWC squads.

I'm a big Simpson Daniel fan but his defence looked a bit questionable there and Hodgson gave a handful of reasons why he shouldn't go. To be honest I reckon the 10 options should be Flood, Wilkinson and maybe take Farrell.

  • Classic game from the baabaas, against a "B" english side
Good to see guys like bastareaud, sackey, visser and michalak at their best level.
Sad about michalak choice to leave in the SH, because he could still bring some fantasy to the NH game. His constant injuries haven't allowed him to show more of it (Wilkinson syndrom?)

Wish him all the best with the Sharks

  • So please tell me what club sox is George Smith wearing?? They are not Manly, Brumbies, Wallabies or Toulon, does anyone know what they are??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 11:30 am

  • George Smith might b wearing the socks of the japanese team he'll be playing for after the world cup

some real good tries from the BaaBaas, such a shame i couldn't go (fcking exams)

  • Who's the viking in the giant beard seen at 0.16 sec!?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 11:37 am

  • @ Luxi, I thought that about the sox too but of the clubs he has been linked with (i.e Suntory or Wild knights (depending on what you read/believe) none of them wear sox look like the ones George was wearing. Be interested if anyone has any other ideas.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 11:48 am

  • The viking is Erik Lung (norvegian playing with Biarritz)
I'm impressed by tim visser, from netherland

Allways good to see matches with baabaas!!!

  • Pink socks are for Stade francais... bastareaud has one but the other one is for Toulon, his futur club!
I don't know why sackey has a pink one!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 11:50 am

  • Sackey has a pink one because e is going to Stade francais.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:00 pm

  • That's Lund, lock for Biarritz.. Norvegian guy, you're not that far when talking about a viking :D

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:02 pm

  • I agree... Good match!

Any opinion about England's try by Ugo Money?

Well played but at first Ugo Money prevents the ball carrier to get up.
    It's all very quick though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:21 pm

  • Was that fijian guy in the last try a lock?! completely outstripped the english back line.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:34 pm

  • Looked an entertaining game, not that you'd know from the highlights. Complete amature hour for the broadcaster, how many times did they switch camera angle just before an interesting hit? What a load of toss from Sky.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:34 pm

  • @ Anonymous

I'm pretty sure that there is no rule in rugby that says you have to let a player back up to his feet, and I've been told that it's one of the biggest misconceptions in rugby. You might want to check up on that though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:36 pm

  • Yeah. Hammered off the field by the Irish and beaten by the BaaBaa's. Looking good for the World Cup, all right. BRRRRRPPP. LOL

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 12:50 pm

  • What else can Monye do? the guy dived on the ball and didnt make an attempt to get to his feet

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 1:35 pm

  • 'Was that fijian guy in the last try a lock?! completely outstripped the english back line.'

You took the time to write a comment and wait for a reply, but if you'd just read a bit, you'll find the answer is in the write-up.

    Good game.

By Anonymous James, at June 01, 2011 2:12 pm

  • ^ Eh, actually the answer isn't in the write-up. In his comment he asked if the guy was a lock. It only mentions the guy's name in the write-up though, not his position.

    Also, Tim Visser is deadly.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 2:17 pm

  • I think the lead up to the last try saw the lock outpace the no 6 rather than a back. Still quick though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 2:30 pm

  • Joe Tekori is Samoan not Fijian stupid British commentator..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 2:33 pm

  • Great game! Poor defence from the English! Baabaas took advantage of it, especially Visser and Michalak.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 3:14 pm

  • Right you are. My bad. Read it too fast.. about as fast as big Joe Tekori, the Samoan lock! :)

By Anonymous James, at June 01, 2011 3:16 pm

  • About the Monye try:
There is no law that the ball becomes unplayable because someone on the ground has it. The law states that as long as the attacker stays on his feet, he can compete for the ball.
Going in for a tackle when someone fields the ball on the floor would probably be against the law and concede a penalty.

By Anonymous LG, at June 01, 2011 3:19 pm

  • Just to clarify:
By tackle, I mean falling on to the player.

By Anonymous LG, at June 01, 2011 3:22 pm

  • To Anonymous June 01, 2011 12:36 PM

You're right ... there is no law or rule that says "have to let the player back up to his feet. "

    What exists is:
    14.1 a)
A player on the ground with the ball must immediately do one of three things:
    Get up with the ball
    Pass the ball
    Release the ball.

He wasn't tackled or even showed intention to get up, if you add to this the speed of the play, the try is good.

If Monye had made a tackled interpretation would be different, but in this case he just went for the ball...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 3:36 pm

  • God I love the Barbarians.I hope it goes on forever! The spirit is what matters.

By Anonymous Amateurdayswerebetter, at June 01, 2011 3:43 pm

  • HA HA Stuart Barnes what an idiot, Joe Tekori Fijiian!!! He's Samoan you poor excuse for a rugby commentator!!!! You commentated on him during the last RWC!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 3:44 pm

  • on monye's try should of been a penalty against him if a defending player slides on a ball on the ground he has to be let get on his feet this wasn't done so no try should of been given!

By Anonymous rick, at June 01, 2011 4:38 pm

  • Amazing game. The Baa baas always provide the most amazing running rugby. Before the match in their practice drills all they practiced was offloads! I love it!

How long til Visser qualifies to play for scotland? With Lamont in the centre and Visser running support lines like he did today, we could see some MEAN Scottish tries!

By Blogger SmellyNerfherder, at June 01, 2011 4:45 pm

  • @ Rick;
read three posts up mate. Learn the rules before quoting them. Ugo didn't attempt to tackle the player on the floor or stop him getting up, he played the ball. The player on the floor wasn't even attempting to get up otherwise he would have been on his knees attempting an illegal squeeze ball, making is harder for Ugo to get the ball and thus giving his team time to scramble defence. Try stands. Great game though, love the BaaBaas :)

    By Anonymous Jimbo1, at June 01, 2011 5:43 pm

  • looks great but i dont understand how Van Niekerk's try stood, surely there were at least two baabaas knock ons before it? attempted interception went forward and then michalak failed to gather an offload?

    commentators are awful as well...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 6:15 pm

  • visser is playing very well this season!!

By Anonymous Cheis, at June 01, 2011 6:20 pm

  • Iosefa Tekori is a samoan and a lock playing for Castres Olympique in Top 14, AMAZING player, all the season he did great run, faster than some back..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 6:33 pm

  • Awful, awful commentary. Those two should NOT be commentating (at least together, Barnes shouldn't be allowed near a mic in NZ at all imo) at thw RWC this fall. How embarassing. Imagine if he called a Scot an Irishman or a Welshman an Englishman, or an Englishman a Frenchman? And said "that is pure French genius at it's best"? That is woefully embarassing.

Great tries though, love seeing Smith and Visser playing well. JVN try was pretty horrible job by England though. Love all BaaBaas games though, and love seeing England get whipped, so great stuff RD!

By Anonymous Wooohooo, at June 01, 2011 7:05 pm

  • ''Tim Visser, tracking off his left wing...a la Ashton''

    Exsqueeze me?

I did not know Ashton was the first one ever doing that and that therefore his name is forever attached to the tracking of the ball by any wing ( I do like Ashton, just don't understand that comment).

Nevertheless, looked like a stunning game, some good attack, some dubious defence. Sad to see the stadium is not filled up but great advert for rugby anyway.

By Anonymous Guy, at June 01, 2011 7:17 pm

  • r.e. Monye Try,

The defender should have tried to get to his feet, even if then tackled, he would have bought some time for some supporting defence to get in place and would be allowed to handle the ball a bit longer.

    Is this right?

By Anonymous Krang, at June 01, 2011 7:55 pm

  • ^ yes

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 8:14 pm

  • that is a massive team

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 8:36 pm

  • Not only is Visser the only Dutch player to ever play for the BaaBaas but hes also hung like a race horse. so much respect

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 01, 2011 8:51 pm

  • Hop Visser Hop!!!!!
Is he actually playing for the Dutch team or not?

Great open games from both team and very happy to see Freddie heading back to the Sharks.....funny too see this link between the Sharks and some Frenchies (Lacroix, Roumat and Michalack).

Knowing how the French are not so keen on expatriation...should say enough about the Sharks and their environment :-)

By Anonymous Flipjeh, at June 01, 2011 10:36 pm

  • Guy, It's Barnes commentating, just ignore everything he says, he is truly terrible. We really do have a terrible choice here, it's either Barnes and his massive ego or Guscott boring everyone to death. It may come as a suprise but Brian Moore isn't the worst commentator by far!

By Anonymous Nick, at June 01, 2011 11:03 pm

  • Joe is Samoan not Fijian

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 2:13 am

  • Did Big Willie Mason ever had a run on debut on this match?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 2:15 am

  • Well as our moron brethren from down south often take advantage of these situations I think I'll jump on the band wagon:

"this match doesn't matter to us. It was only our b team. It wasn't worth anything. We don't care about these games. Blah blah, dee fucking blah blah!"

By Anonymous Sam, at June 02, 2011 2:17 am

  • Great game played in true tradition of the Barbarians.

Really not sure how good England are at the moment, think its fair to say we are improving, but then for a while we were rubbish and hard/boring to watch so not difficult. Just hope we stick with MJ for a while.

He has an approach that has been missed, to field the squad he did for this game shows that he is interested in bringing in new players that can only be good and make players in the squad work harder to keep their place, hopefully this will lead to better match performances

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 2:34 am

Well my moron brother, you're actually right. It was an Egnlish b team and anyone with any sense wouldn't read anything into it.

  • Cant believe Willie Mason signed for Toulon... Better off taking that 1million per year to the local casino.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 6:07 am

  • LOL Mason is all but not paid a million... U'r crazy. :-D

On the other hand, he just trained 1 hour or 2 at XV before that game. Give him more time...

Even if in Toulon we got a lot of doubts about his adaptation.

  • :S why on earth would you let someone you just tackled get back to his feet with the ball ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 1:30 pm

  • I would have liked a little talk of the controversial inclusion of Willie Mason in the barbarian side. It's a bit of a talking point down here in Aus.

By Anonymous JBristow, at June 02, 2011 2:24 pm

  • I don't see how including anyone to the INVITATIONAL SIDE that is the BaaBaas can be controversial?

By Anonymous eh eh, at June 02, 2011 6:42 pm

  • Looked like a good game, will visser be scottish qualified or did he play for holland already? I haven't seen Bastareaud for a while, I can see why lievremont wasnt happy with him ho looks very over weight, Aaah james simpson-daniel the neverman of english rugby lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2011 6:54 pm

  • mate what's with Simspon-Daniel? He's a try scoring, side-stepping machine in every shirt bar the England one. Cold chest syndrome?

Tim Visser- just amazing. "The Flying Dutchman" is the most spot on nickname in years.

Regarding of the comments of Stuart Lancaster defending the selection of Mouritz Botha to the Saxons -the guy's name is Mouritz Botha for God's sake, how can you ever be more saffer than that?- I think the RFU have to stop doing such things. Think of Hartley, Flutey, Botha, Catt, Ward-Smith, Fourie, Stevens, Hape...

Invest in some bloody home-grown talent goddamit!

    Cheers

By Anonymous Juggernauter, at June 02, 2011 10:27 pm

  • @Juggernauter: Spot on! They play here for three years and think they deserve an England shirt - it's a joke. The latest one which TRULY terrifies me is Martin Johnson making doe eyes at Thomas Waldron!! If that fat Tiger bastard ever plays in an England shirt I'll cheer for Wales.

By Blogger SmellyNerfherder, at June 03, 2011 12:42 pm

  • "They play here for three years and think they deserve an England shirt - it's a joke."

No, they don't think it. The England management and coaching staff do. That's where the wooing comes from.

By Anonymous katman, at June 03, 2011 1:56 pm

  • Just to show how ridicoulous that law is, imagine th stint Flutey had with Brive.

On that time, he was a Kiwi, who had graudated from the age group ranks of NZ rugby and played for the Maori, playing in France. Still he was wearing the England jersey!

And SmellyNerfherder, I agree fully on the Waldrom comment, I think it's a disredpect for guys like Luke Narraway, Jordan Crane, James Haskell, Tom Guest and many more who have been training their asses off to get a spot in the England team. One of his grannies is english born and that erases all his links with New Zealand?

That's bonkers. He's as much of a kiwi than the Haka.

And regarding the case of Hape... it's really embarrasing that an old, league convert, who can't spark a single attack to be given the no.12 jersey.

    Look onto the future, Jonno!

    Cheers

By Anonymous Juggernauter, at June 03, 2011 3:31 pm

  • In terms of players like Waldrom and Flutey, with a World Cup coming up i would much rather have 1st rate players who are obviously playing better than their competition playing for me than 2nd rate players who have simply lived in the country longer. However when it comes to players like Hape, no matter what nationality he is he should never play in an england shirt

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 6:50 pm

  • And I'm pretty sure that Tim Visser doesn't actually play for Holland, however his father was the highest capped dutch player of all time

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 6:51 pm

  • I thought Joe is Samoan? Is he Fijian?
