Ita Vaea suspended for a week for knocking out Digby Ioane

Brumbies number eight Ita Vaea has been suspended for a week following the tackle that left Reds winger Digby Ioane knocked out cold at Suncorp Stadium on the weekend.

The Reds were on the wrong end of a shock upset to the Brumbies, who showed the type of passion and commitment that has been mysteriously absent throughout the season. A last minute penalty by Matt Giteau - who refused to kick the ball out and gift the Reds a losing bonus point - meant the 13th place Brumbies came out 22-14 winners.

The home side suffered a bad blow earlier in the match when star winger Ioane copped a stiffarm tackle from young Ita Vaea, knocking him out before he hit the turf with a thud.

The tackle was missed at the time, much to the annoyance of the home crowd (as you'll hear at the end of this clip), but the Brumbies loose forward was later cited and found guilty at a SANZAR judicial hearing in Brisbane. He will be out of rugby for a week.

Ioane suffered concussion but there was reportedly no further damage. He will however miss next week's meeting with the Western Force in Perth, and is just another injury worry for the table topping side. Anthony Faingaa and Ben Lucas are other injury concerns.

"It's a contact sport and you're going to get damage. Unfortunately all our damage is in the backs," said Reds coach Ewen McKenzie.

  • It's a very average tackle, we see tens of these every match. No malice whatsoever involved.

If nothing had happened to Digby after this nobody would be complaining, but it is true that we judge by consequences....

Anyway, tough sport rugby, eh? Chicks dig it.

  • i thought that chisholm was tackling Ioane as Vaea makes the hit pulling him down which made it a forearm on jaw hit. There was no intent and I thought a ban was a bit harsh but that seems to be the way it is judged - by results not intentions.

  • Accidental, and also flukey. Although getting direct knocks to the chin or nose can send you out flat, this sort of tackle happens all the time in games, Ioani just unlucky to get it get a direct, direct hit.

Was he still fully out on the stretcher or what? Suppose you can't have a person in that state walking off in fairness

I think the comment referred to the ref!

  • Shame for Ioane but I gotta admit I laughed twice while watching this video.
"A bit of involuntary planking from Digby Ioane"
and of course the kid at the end

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 06, 2011 6:28 pm

  • I think the citing was a bit harsh given the fact that he made the tackle while the player was already on the way down and clearly he committed long time before he started to go down. It was merely an unfortunate event but I don't see any malicious behavior about this tackle at all.

By Blogger Life in the veiw of Real talk, at June 06, 2011 6:42 pm

  • i think it is a bit harsh as well.you can see he lines digby up for the hit, then ducks his head to make the tackle,so he can't see digby falling

    By Anonymous Leeners93, at June 06, 2011 6:47 pm

  • uhhhh if after a concussion IRB says 3 weeks out, surely the ban for the cheap shot, should be more?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 06, 2011 6:47 pm

  • well, turns his head to the side anyway :)

    By Anonymous Leeners93, at June 06, 2011 6:49 pm

  • A wild Ioane appeared. Vaea used forearm. It's super effective. The wild Ioane fainted.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 06, 2011 7:47 pm

  • I think this was a bit of an unlucky KO. I don't think there was any malice (as the commentators appear to accuse). I think it was just that Ioane was pulled down as the tackle was lined up. That being said, I can understand why Vaea was cited, but I think it was definitely not intentional and probably why the ban is so small.

By Blogger medicaluke, at June 06, 2011 8:00 pm

  • The involuntary planking comment was way out of order considering the nature of the injury.

Also where the hell was the parent of the kid at the end? if that was my boy i would have punched him square in the face.

  • This move was patented by the Bulls' JP Nel. He even wore a solid forearm cast for the occasion.

  • What exactly is 'involuntary planking'?

Hope Ioane is none the worse for the tackle. As people who read these commments regularly know, I hate spear tackles and actions that risk the health of players, but I agree with the folks here saying that this looks mostly accidental.

  • ANON wrote; "uhhhh if after a concussion IRB says 3 weeks out, surely the ban for the cheap shot, should be more?"

Show me where the IRB have that three week law?

Also, was not a cheap shot.

    You look a little silly.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 06, 2011 9:50 pm

  • The IRB changed the laws on friday that anyone who suffers concussion (be they amateur or professional) has a 3 week ban from training and matches.
Professionals can come back quicker when under the close supervision of a doctor who will check them off on their recovery.
They also changed the criteria for concussion, so expect to see more people taken off for concussion.

  • It seems a bit unlucky, almost as if it only happened because digby was falling and the tackle went wrong.

  • A bit idiotic for Vaea to be suspended for that; a suspension will do nothing to prevent it from happening again, nor does it reverse any of the ill-effects of the situation.

Just dumb all around, but what else is new from citing commissions?

By Anonymous orange, at June 06, 2011 10:09 pm

  • Shouldn't be cited for that, just big man on little man.

Get to see Bakkies "cheap shot" Botha do what he does best as well. Nice charge on an unaware opponent from the side. An absolute mile from coming through the gate. Ref and linesmen completely miss / ignore it. Disgraceful.

By Anonymous DJ, at June 07, 2011 12:20 am

  • Tacklers use the forearm like that all the time. Its a bit high and might give the tackled player a bit of a sore chin. Its borderline dirty play but usually does not result in a complete KO. This time it did and Vaea would probably be pretty happy that he only copped one week.
McKenzie had the right attitude. Its a contact sport after all.

  • "Punched him square in the face"..

I literally couldn't stop laughing at that, thats the sort of comment we want to see.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 4:45 am

  • LOL - Good work kid, couldn't agree more "they reds are dickheads"

    By Anonymous Good1kid, at June 07, 2011 4:47 am

  • 0:06 - As soon as Digby catches the ball "Here we go" - Tim Horan you are almost as annoying as Greg Martin.

Please sack these monkies and bring Jeremy Paul into the commentary.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 4:49 am

  • Did not seem to happen with real intention to hurt.

But then again: that is not demanded for a citing.

Definite grey area I guess. Which is reflected in the length of the ban: only one week.

Hope Digby will be ok soon.

By Anonymous Guy, at June 07, 2011 8:02 am

  • LOL - I gotta agree, I'm Aussie and Horan/Marto need to get the sack... It's horrible listening to them commentate. JP is a good choice, very funny guy.

Also Ioane did look to fall into Vaea's arm... So not sure about him getting a week?

By Anonymous Nicko, at June 07, 2011 10:44 am

  • It was unfortunate for Vaea that Digby was falling at the time, there was no malicious intent there at all and why does Greg Martin ALWAYS over react where his precious Reds are concerned. Yes I'm sorry Digby was injured but for Vaea to be banned for it is a bit much!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 11:22 am

  • he ducked into it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2011 11:31 am

  • Not sure how deliberate that was.

It was a swinging arm though, maybe that's why they decided he was guilty of something. He also didn't miss, the suits always seem to take that into account.

By Anonymous edbok, at June 07, 2011 1:28 pm

  • I reckon there was no intent there what so ever...We see these types of tackles all the time as the player is falling...perhaps the ban was handed out to make sure others are more careful which is understandable...

  • That was pathetic, If a rugby player falls into a tackle they should face the consequence of their head being closer to a defending players knee or rising arm. The tackle was fine in my opinion,

  • "If a rugby player falls into a tackle they should face the consequence of their head being closer to a defending players knee or rising arm."

    Interesting concept.

When a player is tackled they generally fall, this being the nature of a rugby tackle and all. Are really saying that any player being tackled should accept that they are 'responsible' for being kneed in the head?

Bollocks to that. It will always be the tackler's responsibility to ensure the don't smack the tackle-ee in the head. Vaea is unlucky to be suspended here - but not nearly as unlucky as Ioane.

There are enough issues with the likes of Bakkies manufacturing situations where they can give a disgraceful head shot(e.g. on Gio Aplon). Don't be telling them that they have now have no responsibility towards players once they have been tackled by someone else. It would be carnage.
