Brett Sheehan's big hit on Quade Cooper, & Berrick Barnes update

The good news is it's Friday. The bad news? There isn't any, it's Friday. For most of you that will mean knocking off work early (if you haven't already), hooking up with mates, and watching rugby all weekend. Here's two clips to start it.

The first comes from last weekend's Super Rugby game between the Reds and the Force, a game that the Reds won in the dying moments thanks to a long pass from flyhalf Quade Cooper.

Earlier in the match Cooper took a big hit though from fiery scrumhalf Brett Sheehan as he passed infield. Sheehan, despite being short in stature, punches well above his weight and pretty much resembles an angry pitbull. Of course Cooper was there for the taking and probably off balance, but it was a big impact, so well worth sharing with those big hit lovers out there.

The second clip here is a lot more tragic in nature, although somehow the Aussie sense of humour manages to make light of a serious situation, and not necessarily in a bad way.

You might have heard about Waratahs and Wallabies back Berrick Barnes having experienced a few big knocks of late, and complaining of experiencing bad headaches. It's now got to the point that he's made the decision to hang up his boots, until things improve.

It's a big call so close to a Rugby World Cup that he would no doubt be a big part of, but it sounds like his hands were tied in terms of what he can and can't do on the field and in training, so we wish him all the best for the near future, and hope to see him out there playing for the Wallabies at the world cup in New Zealand later this year.

Below are both clips, the first being the hit on Cooper, and the second being a discussion on The Rugby Club about the Barnes situation.

On a sidenote, there have already been two games of Super Rugby this weekend, but tomorrow will be what decides the positioning on the final table. To find out how that all works, we've got a handy explanation that outlines who will finish where, who plays who, etc. View that here.

  • Shame, guy gives his all every game. Will be missed. Sensible decision on his part though. Lets hope its not permanent!

  • Good on him, too many stories of rugby and American football players and boxers going on too long and being left with permanent damage

  • I like seeing QC getting hit. He's an outstanding player but I somehow don't like him I don't know why. It irrational.
Good to See Barnes made the right choice. Will be missed in the world cup. Wallabies looking bad without him and Drew Mitchell. Let's what they do in the Tri Nations.

  • At least he won't remember the Cheetahs game. HaHa, brilliant!

  • Cracking hit!!

On barnes... Well I must admit I'm NOT a fan of barnes, he seemed very whiny in a few games I saw him in, HOWEVER he has a lot of guts to make that call and as a rugby fan I wish him all the best! I'd much rather see barnes on the pitch and have a moan about how he seems whiny than have him not play again!

    Get well soon

    From an England fan!

  • Nice hit. Great line up and caught QC unaware.

Sensible decision by Barnes. "Footballer's Migraine" as they call it can develop into much worse. There are numerous accounts of people developing CTE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy). I believe an American even committed suicide because of it. Sad sad story and if Barnes only saves himself, then its one person saved. What I hope is that his show of courage will encourage other players to take the necessary time outs.
I know people complain about concussion and see it a sign of weakness, but I am firmly behind the IRB's new concussion guidelines.

Well done Mr Barnes for taking this courageous step.

  • The term "Footballer's Migraine" is terrible. It totally undersells the risks, especially for the amateurs and young'uns.

In the USA, some parents are having second thoughts about letting their kids play american football (with its constant hits).

I hope Barnes gets better, and the commentator's right -- rugby is a small part of life.

  • odd that the ref didnt call 'crossing' on that first vid, there's no way cooper could have got round if it wasnt.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2011 6:54 pm

  • 2:23 -- Richie McCaw probably does get concussed alot...

considering how much he bridges over the ball to slow it down.

And Since the referees don't see anything wrong with it, the only solution for opponents is to remove him yourself - I am sure opponents give him a thigh or shoulder in the noggin.

  • Concussions are serious stuff, brave decision!

Of topic, is there any way to be able to watch this show online or whatever outside oz?

  • Barnes is such a pussy

  • QC does make the pass thou, despite the oncoming hit - fair play

By Anonymous mise, at June 18, 2011 12:16 am

  • Sorry I'm just in a bad mood because my boyfriend didn't fuck me.

  • i am a huge fan of barnes. creative and skillful player. he is better than giteau. i really hope its not permanent.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 3:11 am

  • Um, what has my boyfriend got to do with this?!?

Im allowed an opinion am I not?!?

By Anonymous ElTigre, at June 18, 2011 4:19 am

  • El Tigre, that is the stupidest opinion.
He's a pussy? For not wanting permanent brain damage?
    Your opinion is worthless.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 4:55 am

  • Cooper was concentrating on getting his pass away, not on bracing himself. He was off balance and willing to take the hit, just to make sure he gets a good pass off; it's why QC is such a good player.

As for Barnes, he should've taken the time out a while ago. Shame to see him now with the world cup just around the corner

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 7:58 am

  • Barnes is physically weak. Not something Rugby or anyone else can fix for him, just bad luck.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 3:49 pm

  • ^ Immature troll.

    Go elsewhere please.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 4:13 pm

  • It's nothing to do with being an immature troll, some people aren't built like others.

Some guys have glass jaws, others have glass bodies, others have both - Barnes, unfortunately for him, being one of them.

There's a reason he goes down concussed every game and 99.9% of other players don't. To expect the game to be changed to suit his fragile body is preposterous.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2011 11:25 pm

  • Brave decision by Barnes and good luck to him.

By Anonymous It's not the critic who counts., at June 19, 2011 12:26 am

Couldn't agree more, mate. (and don't steal my thoughts again!)

No, the reason is that he had a series of concussions. That can happen to anyone. It doesn't make him fragile! How ignorant of you.

Who said anything about expecting the game to be changed because of him anyway?

By Anonymous James, at June 19, 2011 10:58 am

  • Well looks like the majority of people are actually decent folk only eltigre and an idiot anonymous that feel the need to be complete cocks...

By Anonymous BDFG, at June 19, 2011 1:58 pm

  • Concussion is not something to take lightly and repeated head injuries can lead to serious health problems later in life.
The NFL are only now getting a clear idea about how collisions (even low speed impacts) are effecting brain function in ex-players down the line.
These impacts can lead to depression at least and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's at worst.
Rugby lags behind other sports in this respect partly because it has only been a pro sport since '95. This and the fact that the players are so much bigger, thanks to improvements in nutrition and sports science, suggests that this type of problem will increase in frequency.

  • 'The NFL are only now getting a clear idea about how collisions (even low speed impacts) are effecting brain function in ex-players down the line.'

lol, thats not the collisions doing that....they were already like that...

  • Wtf is wrong with you? If the whole of Wales can still back gareth Thomas even though he is gay then surely you guys can accept that some gay people will come to the website and comment! There is no need to be so homophobic!!!!

By Anonymous El Tigre, at June 22, 2011 10:05 am

  • My original comment was Barnes is a pussy. I don't like pussy and therefore I don't like Barnes.

Quade Cooper is a dick though and I love him.
