Kurtley Beale back from the dead, then commentator swears

Possibly the most naturally gifted fullback in world rugby today, Wallaby Kurtley Beale showed how lethal he is with ball in hand again on the weekend. He also did a BOD. Oh, and a commentator swore on air right after that.

What does Kurtley Beale have in common with Brian O'Driscoll? Not a helluva lot probably. Those of you who watched Saturday's Tri Nations game, and watched the Magners League Grand Final two months ago, will probably have made the connection though.

O'Driscoll showed his typical never say die attitude in that match, as he was getting treatment for an injury when he popped up to make a tackle. Beale did the same thing against South Africa, which immediately brought back memories of that great BOD moment.

In this case, Beale almost set up a great try after rejoining the action, but it was called back as the Wallabies got close to the tryline. Gio Aplon's collision with Beale didn't look too bad at first, especially when you saw him hop up and streak down field, but the fullback was actually cut quite badly, so got strapped up after.

In fact of all the Wallaby players, Beale is in the worst shape following the match, having had four stitches and a twisted ankle. On top of that, he now has his arm in a sling too. The game-breaker will apparently be fine to play against the All Blacks in two weeks time though.

It was a classic moment in the match, and if that wasn't enough to entertain you, commentator Greg Martin then slipped up by swearing on air. Great stuff.

  • Ah, you got to it before me anonymous. Shit!

    Nah I'm only messing, you're a loser.

  • yeup, not magic when bod does it, only when beale does it.

Also with a wild pass like that beale is lucky he didnt get horwill massively smashed!

  • Beale only sustained a cut to the eye. Watch the match and you can see fine well that his eye was practically ok. Although, in all fairness, I can see why many thought it could be a typical footballer response. It took me and some friends a while to notice the truth behind it, whilst complaining!

  • Hey anon, what the hell are you whining about? Not magic when BOD does it? What?
No one said that, it's just in your head.
And Horwill should have caught the ball, he would not have got smashed, he would have offloaded for the try. The skills level has got to lift more for the Wallabies.

  • where is the swear? i didnt here it anyway.. what time please ?

By Anonymous Munster, at July 26, 2011 3:35 am

  • Which part, the part where Martin says,

"I swear I was watching Kurley Beale when the breakdown occurred - he pushed the trainer and jumped to his feet..."

or the part where it sounded like he said,

    "Ohhhh, shiiit...did that go backwards?"

Either way, I thought the best was when they put the Kearns mentioned up the magic tape being put on Beale: "just in case Kepu gets injured; Beale will be able to step up to the front row."

As a back, I can attest to the fact that the only difference between us and the front row is a bit of gauze and some electrical tape. Hell, even Aplon has already got a scrumcap on, just in case.

  • whoops, that was meant to have it as
    "I swear..."

By Anonymous i love bacon, at July 26, 2011 3:48 am

  • JH93, if you saw his face the next day he got a pretty solid knock. Nthing too bad, but he had a bad cut and his whole left side of his face swelled up the next day.
So he wasn't being a too much of a girl by getting a bit of medical attention. Just a bit of a girl. A forward would have just laughed it off!

  • This is a great companion video to the Kurtley Beale Falcon :)

@ i love bacon yeah I heard that one too and I chuckled. Love them Aussie commentators.

  • No arguments about Kurtley's ability with the ball in hand, but I've yet to meet an Aussie who feels okay having him as the last line of defence.

Right here, he'd probably have caused more problems playing dead by the touchline rather than pretending that he wanted to make a tackle.

  • I love watching the Aussie backs running at defences - O'Connor and Beale have great instincts.

Not looking forward to them running at us at the World Cup, of course...

  • Obviously anonymous in fourth there wasn't around for the BOD love-in a few weeks back.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 26, 2011 7:42 pm

  • greg martin should be fired-not because of the slight swearword but because he is shiite himself. most one eyed and biast commentator there is and along with phil kearns conspires to know nothing at all about the opposition players!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 27, 2011 2:41 am

  • I once did something similar in a game, albeit at a significantly lower level.

I got late hit and dislocated a rib and was writhing in pain on the ground and the ball was kicked in my direction... I tried to get up but collapsed in pain, quite a different result.

I think the guy and his dog on the sideline were impressed though!

On another more interesting point, I don't see how BOD and Beale are that different, they are both talented rugby players who have been considered close to the best at their position in the world... Other than nationality, what's the major difference?

By Anonymous Canadian Content, at July 27, 2011 5:53 am

  • Edbok, Beale has actually really improved his defence and has made quite f ew try savers in the last couple seasons.
Also, he is not defending at fullback anymore, he now defends on the wing.

  • Munster, the swear is right at the end 1.23

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 27, 2011 9:01 am

  • Or 1.20

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 27, 2011 9:01 am

  • canadian, considering ribs are not attached by joints i find it hard to believe you "dislocated" one of them.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 27, 2011 12:15 pm

  • There's O'Driscoll, Beale ... and Os du Randt for Cheetahs v Waratahs. He was down receiving treatment when Mat Burke got clear. Or so he thought before Os got up. Then it was Burke down receiving treatment.

  • Is Beale better than Nascewa at the mo, or is it just impossible to tell without Nascewa playing international?

By Anonymous mise, at July 27, 2011 7:42 pm

  • Beale is a much better player.
He's one of the most talented players in rugby at the moment, can play at five eight, fullback or wing equally well.
And he's only 22, getting better.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 28, 2011 1:29 am

  • Anonymous: I'm thinking of full back specifically thou.

Also Nascewa wasn't really getting his game at the start of the season, and ended it as Leinster player of the year. So he's really blossomed beyond any typical improvement (ie from replacement to best player). And that's in a team with Heaslip and Sean O Brien in it, one that won the HC.

Has anyone seem _both_ of them this year a reasonable amount?

By Anonymous mise, at July 28, 2011 1:49 am

  • Yeah, I have, and Beale is a much better player.
Nascewa wasn't anything too special when he played down south, and he's never been tested at the highest level.
He's a good player, but doesn't offer anywhere near the rugby brain, passing game or development potential of Beale.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 28, 2011 9:23 am

  • @Anonymous answering Canadian. You're a fucking idiot. Your ribs are connected to your spine and to your sternum by the costal cartilage, all together they form the ribcage. Of course it's possible to dislocate a rib, try learning some basic fucking anatomy before calling someone a liar. Do you think your ribs just float around your body? Moron.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 29, 2011 3:38 pm

  • BOD is a dirty fenian.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 29, 2011 3:40 pm

  • anonymous:
i don't doubt that beale is better than nascewa was 3 years ago in NZ, my query is directed towards ppl who might have seen a reasonable amount of _both_ SH and NH rugby _this_ year, and who might be able to make some kind of a call on their relative merits.

By Anonymous mise, at July 29, 2011 4:10 pm

  • Cooper Absolutely decks basson after the pass gets knocked on... not to difficult though..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 30, 2011 1:10 am

  • Mise, I watched all of Leinsters HC matches. I watched a lot of highlights. I watched most of the Tahs matches and all the wallabies matches last year.
Beale has a much better all round game.
    He's in a different class.
He is a world class five eight, and a world class fullback.
He is arguably the best fullback in the world, and he does it at the highest level.
Nascewa hasn't even played at the highest level.
    There is no comparison.
