Christian Cullen try vs the Waratahs - Best solo try ever?

There's been much debate on here and elsewhere as to which is the best solo try ever. We compared the Habana solo effort against the Blues to this one.

Obviously everyone has their own opinion, but this Cullen effort is right up there as one of the best we've seen. In his prime, Cullen was unstoppable.

  • I've got a 'Greatest Moments in All Black History" DVD and there is a huge section devoted to a few players, Christian Cullen being one of them. A great watch :)

  • for me, much better than habanas solo try!

  • No comparison. Cullen was a god. Till he did his knees in. Now hes just a legend. Habana is overrated. Brent Russel so much beta.

  • in mi opinion this try was a lot due to a lack of defense, half of the players who tried to tackle cullen went for a french tackle when they could just have grabed him

  • you got to be joking - lack of defense? did you watch the video! he was going for it! the guys just couldn't get close enough and the dummy too...brilliant! ANYONE who can go the length of the field has speed and skill...nuff said...

  • Habana rules. His try is the best.Defence is much better these days rather than in days when cullen and lomu played.

  • Whilst defensive patterns have indeed improved ... tackling in looser game situations have not.

Cullen and Lomu were as amazing as they appear in these vid's.

  • this has got to be one of the greatest individual tries!! since when has habana even weaved thru traffic making his own space?? he's jus got pace to burn.. aint seen him break that many tackles??! not hating on the guy.. jus my opnion hehehe

  • I'm an avid Cullen fan of old and there are a few vids of Cullen on Youtube worth their weight in peanuts along with that one above.
The 'Cullen Tears Scotland a new one'
Only his second test in an AB Jersey (though in that match it was white) and he scores 4 tries. He'd scored 3 vs Samoa in his previous AB callup.
The first of these is quite a classic.
Pity he did his knees in, that guy was the dog's bollocks.
Saw him play 7s in HK a while back where he caught the Fijians napping from his own try area, that's on Youtube too.
To the guys who host this website, you guys are absolute legends: they do liven up boring days at work.

  • Habana not looking too bad right now. This is one awesome run though and Cullen was certainly a legend.

  • Certainly Habana is worthy of comparison with Cullen or Caucau. It was such a blow for rugby Cullen's knee injury and Lomu's kidney problem. The youtube clips don't do full justice though to Cullen. There were so many runs that never led to tries, indeed often he'd lose is own players and end up stranded. The strict enforcement of the holding on rule as well really didn't help flair players like him; distribution became far more telling - he never flourished at centre because his off-loading ability was below average. No question if Lomu and Cullen were around today, and they should expect to be, they would be in another class to Roks or Siti, supposedley the big flair players in the side.

  • no doubt Cullen is amazing, but i'd have to agree with what some have said..it was good but not "up there" i think dummy was probs the best moment.

  • stupid comments:
1)the defense was exactly the same
2)They are different type of players on different roles and different styles
    3) Habana is an extraordinary player but he still needs to show till to attain the legend status

  • Hosea Gear scored a try like that without running! you should see it: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VcFAtxvh4ts&feature=related

  • How can u say the tackling was poor, most of them didnt get near enuf to lay a finger on him

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 30, 2007 8:11 pm

  • Comparing this try to Habana's, there is simply no contest. Firstly, Cullen's break comes off a set piece - ie a set defence - and requires not just pace but strength. Secondly, once through, he has o beat three defenders. Two he leaves for dead by changing his line of running, and the third he fools with a textbook dummy (while swerving out if the reach of the second defender). That's class. Habana just picks a line and runs straight. He does well to get past the first defender, but after that it's all about pace rather than skill as neither covering defender has the angle to get him or do anything but stick a forlorn hand out. As for the chip... well, any kick ahead that bounces three times is more about luck than skill. Once again, it works only because Habana is so quick, and even then he only just gets to it. Don't get me wrong, Habana is a great player with a better all-round game than he is given credit for but in terms of skill displayed this try leaves his in the dust.

  • Amen Big D, Amen.

    Cannot argue with that.

  • Cullen is a Machine! that is an awesome try,
I'm a saffa and love habana, but habana would never/has never pulled off a dummy like Cullen did to get past that last nsw player!

By Blogger JaySA, at July 31, 2008 2:53 am

  • Cullens was better than Habana. Beating players is no match for running down a sideline. I agree Habana is overrated

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 26, 2008 11:37 pm

  • Basically this is an amazing try!to go the length of the pitch in such a high standard game is a great feat and those that put him down are chattin bare!I would love to see those people go bak in time, take cullens place and score that try!somehow I feel that wouldn't happen!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2009 2:57 am

  • I definitely find this try better than the Habana one. For that, he was given he ball wide while there was open space, whereas Cullen had to run right through the defending team

By Anonymous Reid, at October 21, 2009 12:59 am

  • Let's take into consideration that Habana had just scored a try when he received the ball from that kick off. So he basically scored two great tries within seconds. Also, he was right up against the touchline... the touchline is a defenders biggest friend and they still couldn't get Habana.

Habana wins this one for me.
