Andrew Mehrtens zaps the crowd after a winning dropgoal
Known for being one of the most intimidating stadiums in the world of rugby, Loftus Versfeld has a reputation as being a place you don't want to be in if you're not supporting the Bulls. I know, I went there as a Sharks supporter once and wasn't too popular in my black and white jersey and painted face.
In 1999 the Crusaders took on the Northern Bulls, as they were known back then, in a Super 12 match that went right down to the wire.
The Bulls lead by more than 15 at half time, but let their lead slip thanks to some courageous play by the men from Christchurch.
All Black star flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens was getting hassled by the crowd all match, and when he slotted the winning drop goal in injury time to seal a memorable away win, Mehrtens celebrated by giving the crowd the old one fingered salute and two armed zap.
The game was remembered more for the reaction from Mehrtens than the winning dropgoal.
Mehrts has always had a fabulous sense of humour, so I personally found this quite funny, although it caused quite a stir at the time.
The final score was 30-28 to the Canterbury Crusaders.

Look how empty the stadium is, geez. Was this when the Bulls were rubbish?

gmc, I'm sure they finished at the bottom of the log that year, with one win... or no wins.

Molly, I was agreeing. :)
Just funny to think back to those days when they were bottom of the table.
I'm afraid without Bakkies and Victor this year, they could be in for a similar fate.. despite being champs.

That was one of the proudest days for a Crusaders supporter.
They Bulls may not have been what they are now but regardless any victory by a NZ side on the High Veldt was rarer than Chiefs semifinal appearance.

Given Mehrtens was born in Durban, perhaps the gesture makes Sharks fans happy as well.

To zap the crowd is anti-rugby I´d say.

scrum half is wearing 18.....number eight is wearing 22! i guess they just threw on jerseys back then regardless of the number

I agree that when Merhtens played for the All Black he was the best kicker they had ever had, but I believe if he stays healthy the current incredible kicker DC (Dan Carter) will surpass Mehrtens record.
