Interviews after Wales turn England over in their own patch

Perhaps not as spectacular as past Welsh/English encounters in terms of plentiful tries and bruising defense, this weekend's match between these two fierce rivals was dramatic nonetheless.

A game of two halves, if there ever was one. England 10 ahead at the break before letting Wales rush back in second forty with two quick fire tries. Despite holding out for the win, Warren Gaitlands men still have plenty to work on before next weekend's clash with the Scots. England too will need to sort themselves out if they wish to avoid embarrassment against Italy in their next match in Rome. A string of injuries will surely set them back though unfortunately.

A historic victory for the Welsh, as 1988 was the last time they'd won at Twickenham.
Refreshing attitudes shown by both captain Ryan Jones and Man of the Match James Hook. Both staying focussed and grounded. After all, the Six Nations isn't won in February.

Stay tuned for the Pick of the Week which will feature all the tries from the weekends action.

  • Fantastic result and not enough credit to Wales, England werent great in the first half if they were they would have gone in 25 points to the good. No one in the england set up has a instinctive rugby brain. Very happy valley boy here.

  • The better team lost, unfortunately.

Ashton pretty much backed up what the majority of English rugby fans were saying before hand.

Give him the boot. It's disgraceful that he managed(that'd be the day!) to field such shite and over rated players, and have us lose to what can only be described as a mediocre rugby team.

Lets hope the next few matches end up with similar losses... Because we don't want a repeat of the World Cup comeback; We need a proper wake up call.

  • The better team lost????? losing with dignity and humility again I see. Why do you think you have a god given right to win? How are you blaming Ashton??? How is it his fault if the boys on the field suffered some kind of break down. Get you life sorted you are making a fool of yourself.

  • Absoultly shocking how we let this one slip. could of won it easy enuf ifwe didnt take our foot off the gas, but typical england we did! so annoyed!

  • Typical english, always graceful in defeat. "Mediocre rugby team", well in that case what does that make you?

Yes we've been poor for a long time but Gatland and Edwards have brought a lot of confidence back to wales and that showed in the second half.

Also, what kind of supporter are you if you want your team to lose the next few games. Complete over reaction. You can't win them all, it's about time the English realised that.

Brilliant win for us, good luck to the boys against Scotland.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 11:04 am

  • Wales deserved to win absolutely - they put pressure on inexperienced combinations and reaped the result and well done to them. I'd like to think that here there's at least one England supporter who can lose well.

Having said all that, is anybody else concerned by the quality of the rugby we saw in all of the games this weekend? I didn't think any of the six played very well. England played ok for about 20 minutes, Wales played well for about 10 (Mr Henson's words, not mine) France got some lucky bounces, and Scotland, Ireland and Italy were all dreadful.

In fact, now that I think about it, the last time I felt there was a really outstanding team in the competition was 2005 when Wales won the Grandslam. Since then there's been a lot of mediocrity...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 1:00 pm

  • well fought by the welsh side, i was really pleased to see that win because we often loose 20:10 even though we know we could win but we lack the belief

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 1:37 pm

  • LOL at all the angry Welsh people.

Lets be serious with ourselfs. There's nothing grace lacking about having enough knowledge on the game of rugby to realise that the better team was beaten.

It's nothing to do with England losing, and everything to do with who we lost to.

A loss to Ireland, France or Scotland is totally fine; they're good and worthy opponents. A loss to a team as poor in comparison as the Welsh isn't acceptable.

Truth is Welsh are mediocre, even on the day you played shite in comparison to an average English performance. 15 minutes of dominance off the back of English mistakes from 2-3 players who shouldn't of been on the field in the first place does not make your victory merit worthy.

Better teams losing games, and teams that deserve the win losing games does happen, you know? I think Saturday is evidence enough of that.

Down with Ashton, Balshaw, Gomersall and Wilko.

  • You english are pathetic, you think you have "a right" to win every game against us. Well out of the last 4 six nations, we've beaten you 3 times. So maybe it's you that are shite and not us.

Also, if you replace all those players then who's going to come in for you? So after one poor game you think Wilkinson isn't up to international standard do you? You're an idiot.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 3:56 pm

  • Geraint, I can't blame you for being annoyed with some of the comments here - there's a lot of immature posturing going on. But if we focus purely on the rugby I think it's reasonable for England fans to be disappointed with the result. Given that we reached the World Cup final and Wales were knocked out by Fiji, given that we were the dominant team in the first half and given that we were leading for the majority of the game, to have lost was very disappointing.

That's not to say we think we have a god-given right to win. There's not a true Enlgand rugby fan in the country that will ever do that given England's dreadful record since 2003.

I would say again, congratulations to Wales for hanging in there and taking their opportunities when they arrived. The superior Welsh composure was the deciding factor in my opinion.

Geraint - hope your lot have a good tournament.

  • Thank you Will, my comments were aimed at anonymous and toby just so that you know. They're both clearly idiots. I can understand why you're all dissappointed because the game should have been over by half time.

Past games against you in Twickenham we've been thrashed nearly every time and we deserve a bit of praise at least for managing to stop that and actualy win for the first time in 20 years. I thank you though Will as you seem like a decent bloke and know a lot more about the game than those 2 other prats.

As for you're other post. Yes the games have been very poor. As a welshman obviously there was a lot of excitement for me and the rest of us during that game, but still wasn't the best of quality. Ireland and Scotland games were extremely poor, i think the main reason for this is the teams have only been together for a week or 2 and maybe that's why everybody was a bit rusty.

Round 2 and 3 i expect will be better.

  • look all u english people we won and thats that it doesnt matter if the better lost the fact is they lost and theres nothing u can do about it
and the person who sed england have beat wales in the last 4 6 nations is a tit england only beat us in 2004 and 2006
we beat u in 2005, 2007 and 2008 so get your facts right next time butt
    wales !!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 5:47 pm

  • the reason you say the standard has been poor isbecause they have not beem with each other for a long time. the other is because all the teams, except for wales france and sometimes ireland, rely on foward dominance.
its funny how the welsh fowards were dominating for only 15 mins and they got 20 points where as the english were dominating for the whole game and got 19!!!
I guess the welsh backs are just better and can handle the pressure of passing and catching the ball:p:p

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 6:08 pm

  • toby mate u make english people or whatever country you 'support' sound like twats, so piss off you reject

england should have had it in the bag in the first half, though, mistakes from Balshaw handed the game to wales. Wilkinson kicking was fine but his tackling and passing were awful.

  • England fans have every right to be disappointed however, I wouldn't go as far as to say that the better team lost. England were favourites to win but in the second half Wales got their heads into the game and deployed the tactics Gatland had emphasised the week before the game (e.g. high balls aimed at Balshaw). This clearly payed off for Wales and they deserved the win. In the grand scheme of things its fair to say England are the better side, on the night however, Wales showed they can compete and win. As admin said it was the definition of a game of 2 halves however Wales capitalised on Englands mistakes in the second half, something England failed dismally at doing before the break.

  • geraint

shut up we beat you when it mattered, the wc in '03 also does 62-5 ring a bell???

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 10:37 pm

  • Yes well done for hammering our third team.

The reason i said that is because people like toby who were calling us mediocre etc. which might be true but considering in the past couple of years (pre world cup warm up not included) we have had a good record against England and i think people need to realise the facts before they say comments like that.

It's fair enough to be annoyed that you lost as the game should have been over before half time. But it wasn't and we won. There's no need to go slagging us off. It's our first win there for 20 years, it was going to happen sooner or later.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 1:53 am

  • Also, since when did the Six Nations not matter then?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 1:57 am

  • excuses excuses

    wc03

also at what point did i say that the 6n not matter?

    get YOUR facts right first

if every1made excuses an English one could be this:
injuries to strettle tindall and moody who were having a great game before they were injured

but not many people have mentioned that

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 6:48 pm

  • Ok Wales played well for 15 minutes. But in that 15 we out scored England and won the game. So surley Wales where the better side. We gave you a 65 minute head start at your home ground in front of your own fans and you still lost. mmmm God help you away in Italy ;-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 11:38 pm

  • You said you beat us when it matters like in the world cup, so you're trying to say the six nations don't matter then? How am i making excuses, looks like you are ("injuries" etc.). We won the game so i don't need an excuse for anything.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 1:00 am

  • by saying 'i could say' doesn't that imply something???

once again, at what point did i say the 6N doesnt matter

also you didnt out score us in 15 mins because you already had 12 points by the 60 min mark

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 5:44 pm

  • Jimmy,

Before you act like a pedant read your own posts first. You said "shut up we beat you when it mattered" (very mature) and mentioned the WC03 and the warm up game. As you seem to be referring to the 6N loss on Saturday you imply that the 6N doesn't matter - I think that is a reasonable assumption to make from your comment.

Sadly many of the depressing and immature comments from English fans here (with the honourable exception of Will) demonstrate why many rugby fans are irritated by you.

The fact is that England lost despite having the game in the bag after an excellent 40 minutes. Wales weren't a fluid side but calling them mediocre after you've lost to them just sounds like sour grapes.

Oh, and it sounds from your 'WC03' comments as if you are the sort of neanderthal who shouts "two world wars and one world cup" at Germans. Grow up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 2:19 pm

  • yer jimmy stop being an idiot and accept when we have lost, at the end of the days our mistakes and the finishing of wales cost us the game

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 5:16 pm

  • The team that won deserved to win, made me sad to watch that video - being very english - but god damnit i love their accents!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 5:47 pm

  • The performance in the second half was pretty dire where were the leaders. they should have been out from half time and bang bang but cant take nothing away from wales! they did wel to turn it around.
And geraint i think the part of the part of the comment you made on the 4th of febuary where you said You english are pathetic is very stupid! do you think every person in enggland is like that person? most of us accept we lost so that comment was wrong.

apart frm that hopefully a good result for england against italy. good luck to wales too

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 10:09 pm

  • that last comment was from me haz

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 10:15 pm

  • So.. Grand Slam anyone? Who's the mediocre team now?

By Blogger .......Luke, at March 15, 2008 11:55 pm

  • Wales kick ass. You can see what wales can do with a reliable set-piece and defence.

p.s English rugby supporters are less rugby educated.
England have only beaten wales more than wales have beaten them by 1 game in the history of rugby.
