Friday Funnies - Richie McCaw is a cheat

In this mornings game between the Sharks and the Crusaders in Christchurch we saw All Blacks and home captain Richie McCaw being yellow carded for a professional foul deep in his half with the Sharks on attack.

It reminded me of this hilarious skit by the New Zealand comedy due of Bill and Ben on Pulp Sport, the low budget sports skit comedy show that has received rave reviews from all who've seen it.

This particular skit plays on the common belief around the world that Richie McCaw plays the line so close that he is in fact cheating. Most of that comes from the fact that McCaw is just so good at what he does. That debate will rage on for years though I'm sure.

As you'll see here, losing the coin toss and dressing up in a Springbok jersey while holding a sign like this in Christchurch is not a good idea.

The kiwis don't come across well in it at all. I'm sure it was only a minority but some of them were acting like football hooligans. A shame they can't just have laugh.

Is he a cheat ? Sure sometimes but thats the position he plays in. He's a good all round player and his illegality at the breakdown takes away from his other parts of the game

Having lived in NZ for over a year it is fair to say Kiwis have no sense of humour about rugby, bigger than religion. When they lost to Australia in the semis of the world cup it was a country in mourning. To be honest I am amazed he didnt get decked.

Oh and Hells Pizza are just fantastic.

Kiwis are so cool. Even the ones flipping him off were laughing about it. You had to figure a couple would get physical, but all they really did was hit/kick the sign.

Yeah to be fair most of the people insulting him were laughing - just enjoying a good bit of friendly banter.
Obviously you're gonna get the odd drunk nutter who wants to get physical but most of them seemed to take it well.

In fairness at the start it was all taken as a laugh but as it went on it got ridiculous. My mates were over for the Lions and Ireland tour there ans said kiwis were the nicest people until the day before the match and they just completely changed and became real aggressive and arrogant.

I really hope its not completely true as the ones i've met have been really cool

I a french rugby fan, and i must admit :
1st) brazil football team supporter have more sense of humour than All blacks fans
2nd) for having watched 3 times Mc Caw game live (Lyon, Paris and Cardif), he is obviously a cheater

Quite frankly anybody who gives away a penalty is technically a cheater. I have no doubts that McCaw has 'various methods' to turn the ball over, but he gets away with it most of the time and that's why I respect him.

He cheats and we all know that but he is good enough to get away with it about 85% of the time. A great openside flanker.

Shame that All Blacks fans come across as utter twats in that video. Some are just "good natured" middle fingers but some get pretty serious. Sorry to see rugby fans acting like their football counterparts but bloody hilarious. I'm tempted to do that if i ever go down to New Zealand for a rugby match. See whether or not i'd get lynched.

Same thing would happen anywhere in the world - give the New Zealanders a break. If an All Black suppporter came to Loftus dressed in his jersey holding a sign like that about Schalk, believe me a lot worse would happen!

I'm sure an Englishman saying the same about Paterson in Scotland would get the same treatment too.. Give the Kiwis a break I reckon. It's just a fun clip, and obviously it would get a reaction.

I hand on my heart believe that an Irishman could do something similar in London or an Englishman could wear a "BOD is a cheat" sign in Dublin on a matchday and get nowhere near that level of abuse. They'd get no physical stuff and certainly wouldn't have some menopausal ould heffer swearing at them!

Like some of you said - McCaw's position demands you to cheat, it's part of the game. Look what happened when the ref reffed him properly about it in the WC Quarter Final - he became annonymous.

The physical abuse was disappointing...footballers...

It's a great shame to see the New Zealand public behave the way they did on this. It's a fucking game at the end of the day, and because someone has a sign, does not mean that you get physical, even if you don't agree with it.

And yes, McCaw is a cheat, and a very good, if not the best No. 7 in the world right now.
You cannot blame McCaw for cheating, as it goes hand in hand with being a number 7... The way I see it is if you can get away with it, do it...
If he started getting pinged for it a lot more often, you'd see him change his style of play. He'd be a fool for not cheating, when he knows he can get away with it!

Kiwi's need to get a sense of humour though- Christchurch seems like a very inviting place...NOT! Was good how the tv people edited out the gills and webbed hands of the locals... inbreeding... never a good thing ;)

McCaw is SUPPOSED be a cheat - and he is the best at it. He is good at everything. Good 7s all live on the edge, Kiwis should know that better than most, if he's offside/slowing the ball he is doing his job.

Just caught this video so apologies for the late comment, but at least I've seen the idiotic stuff that's gone down so far. Please note that this video was made by NZers for a NZ audience which suggests to any intelligent person that the Kiwis' sense of humour about themselves and rugby is in good shape. Very very brave! I have to say as an Englishman that Richie is one of the best back row ever! Nearly as good as Richard Hill and Niel Back were in their day :) I also don't think that you can judge New Zealand on this evidence alone! How long was that guy out for and they only showed 4 minutes of footage!!! By the way for those of you who think this would happen in England you are very much mistaken!

Having spent a month in NZ following the British and Irish Lions on their last tour I know how this guy feels. The only trouble or verbal goading I saw was coming from Kiwi supporters. I wish this intimidatory mentality between fans was kept out of rugby.

All the people who play rugby will know what all looseys are like in the game. If they have a ref that will let them get away with anything the good looseys will just keep doing it all game long while getting away with it. But it does help being captain getting away with more :p
