Friday Funnies - Richie McCaw is a cheat

In this mornings game between the Sharks and the Crusaders in Christchurch we saw All Blacks and home captain Richie McCaw being yellow carded for a professional foul deep in his half with the Sharks on attack.

It reminded me of this hilarious skit by the New Zealand comedy due of Bill and Ben on Pulp Sport, the low budget sports skit comedy show that has received rave reviews from all who've seen it.

This particular skit plays on the common belief around the world that Richie McCaw plays the line so close that he is in fact cheating. Most of that comes from the fact that McCaw is just so good at what he does. That debate will rage on for years though I'm sure.

As you'll see here, losing the coin toss and dressing up in a Springbok jersey while holding a sign like this in Christchurch is not a good idea.

  • Reminds me at Bruce Willis in Die hard III, where he´s forced to walk over the Bronx with a shield "I hate niggers"

  • mcCaw is a cheat so he was telling the truth!!!
    schalk burger is way better!

  • thats immense! shame to see idiots actually get physical over it though

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 1:54 pm

  • lol yeh in all honesty he is a cheat in some aspects of the game...

This tv show does much rugby stuff? if so it would be great to see some more!

    Thanks

  • Haha thats brilliant ! He should've put on a south african accent !

The kiwis don't come across well in it at all. I'm sure it was only a minority but some of them were acting like football hooligans. A shame they can't just have laugh.

Is he a cheat ? Sure sometimes but thats the position he plays in. He's a good all round player and his illegality at the breakdown takes away from his other parts of the game

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 2:12 pm

  • No cheat. Refs must take on him, but McCaw is just doing what is best for the CCrusaders and All Blacks.

    McCaw rules.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 2:16 pm

  • Having lived in NZ for over a year it is fair to say Kiwis have no sense of humour about rugby, bigger than religion. When they lost to Australia in the semis of the world cup it was a country in mourning. To be honest I am amazed he didnt get decked.

Oh and Hells Pizza are just fantastic.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 2:23 pm

  • Balls of steel to wander around wearing that - especially as the evening wore on and people got drunker! Balls of steel!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 2:47 pm

  • the kiwi fans come off like right dicks in that one.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 2:52 pm

  • yeah the Nz guys dont come off so great, especially that women, but what can you expect.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 3:02 pm

  • the sign was funny and a good joke but this isnt soccer rugby fans dont get physical over something like that fuckin disgusting sort it out boys

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 3:16 pm

  • Kiwis are so cool. Even the ones flipping him off were laughing about it. You had to figure a couple would get physical, but all they really did was hit/kick the sign.

By Blogger yawningdog, at May 02, 2008 3:36 pm

  • I can't believe how cool kiwis are. Dude was only assaulted twice, and never lost a drop of blood.

By Blogger yawningdog, at May 02, 2008 3:50 pm

  • Yeah to be fair most of the people insulting him were laughing - just enjoying a good bit of friendly banter.
Obviously you're gonna get the odd drunk nutter who wants to get physical but most of them seemed to take it well.
    Pretty damn hilarious!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 4:20 pm

  • What would the sprinkboks say if it was the other way round with berger? You'd get beaten to a pulp!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 5:10 pm

  • In fairness at the start it was all taken as a laugh but as it went on it got ridiculous. My mates were over for the Lions and Ireland tour there ans said kiwis were the nicest people until the day before the match and they just completely changed and became real aggressive and arrogant.

I really hope its not completely true as the ones i've met have been really cool

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 5:18 pm

  • They behaved like idiots just before the game, they laughed in the begining...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 6:21 pm

Like the one commentator said at the end, he's very lucky to still be alive...LMAO!

By Blogger Don, at May 02, 2008 7:49 pm

  • I a french rugby fan, and i must admit :
1st) brazil football team supporter have more sense of humour than All blacks fans
2nd) for having watched 3 times Mc Caw game live (Lyon, Paris and Cardif), he is obviously a cheater
"look at me ref, straight in the eyes, i am trying to catch the ball, look at me straight in the eye, look at me straight in the eye.." entering the maul from the side, or walking on his knees

Merde !! He is a cheat

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 7:58 pm

  • to be fair, if you walked around central manchester with a sign that said "Ronaldo is a Diver", a lot worse would happen a lot quicker! I think a lot of them saw the funny side of it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 8:10 pm

  • Quite frankly anybody who gives away a penalty is technically a cheater. I have no doubts that McCaw has 'various methods' to turn the ball over, but he gets away with it most of the time and that's why I respect him.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 8:59 pm

  • thats why i love freedom of speech.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 9:39 pm

  • brave, brave man, was he wearing a stab proof vest?!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 10:15 pm

  • He cheats and we all know that but he is good enough to get away with it about 85% of the time. A great openside flanker.

Shame that All Blacks fans come across as utter twats in that video. Some are just "good natured" middle fingers but some get pretty serious. Sorry to see rugby fans acting like their football counterparts but bloody hilarious. I'm tempted to do that if i ever go down to New Zealand for a rugby match. See whether or not i'd get lynched.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 02, 2008 11:17 pm

  • I admit some people take rugby too seriously especially in Chch but this is a tv show made for entertainment obviously edited to show the most controversial/ entertaining reactions and not an indication of the entire nz population a some people have made out in their comments - yes I'm taking to you mr been in nz 1 year and now I'm and expert

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 1:00 am

  • its going to be interesting to see what kind of hospitality the thousands of tourists and rugby fans will get for the next world cup in NZ... theres going to be ALOT more southafrican supporters walking around than just one.. not to mention fans from 18 other countries! haha... ..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 3:56 am

  • He may well be a cheat but 2 b a good bk row u have 2 b!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 4:37 am

  • Same thing would happen anywhere in the world - give the New Zealanders a break. If an All Black suppporter came to Loftus dressed in his jersey holding a sign like that about Schalk, believe me a lot worse would happen!

I'm sure an Englishman saying the same about Paterson in Scotland would get the same treatment too.. Give the Kiwis a break I reckon. It's just a fun clip, and obviously it would get a reaction.

That's my 2 and a half cents anyway.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 10:24 am

  • makes me laugh that NZ fans call SA fans losers..... remind me the world cups each nation has won again?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 10:44 am

  • That wouldn't happen everywhere. I hand on my heart believe that an Irishman could do something similar in London or an Englishman could wear a "BOD is a cheat" sign in Dublin on a matchday and get nowhere near that level of abuse. They'd get no physical stuff and certainly wouldn't have some menopausal ould heffer swearing at them!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 12:40 pm

  • "1st) brazil football team supporter have more sense of humour than All blacks fans"

Was it a joke when they destroyed statues of Ronaldinho and welcomed their team booing and showing their fingers, after the world cup ? Strange sense of humor IMHO...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 12:57 pm

  • Bloody backwards cantabrian rugby fans...other places in New Zealand, he'll get a ribbing, abit of banter but trust those idiots to take it personal and turn violent. A few of them were obviously having a laugh with him too but honestly...

The majority of us kiwis aren't like this at all, just a very small number of retards who take things way too seriously.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 1:16 pm

  • Got to agree with Tanora there. If something similar happened between any of the 6nations fans there would be absolute uproar.

Fair enough its been edited but the sad thing is that it happened at all.

Are SA or Australian fans like that ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 1:27 pm

  • I cannot believe just what cunts the NZ public are (some of them i mean)
seriously mate get over it ! everyones entitled to their opinion and well, any decent international backrow forward has to cheat anyway !
    get over it lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 3:37 pm

  • Hehe, great idea. Suprised by the small-town mentality of those supporters though, very inward-looking people, can't take a joke.

Like some of you said - McCaw's position demands you to cheat, it's part of the game. Look what happened when the ref reffed him properly about it in the WC Quarter Final - he became annonymous.

    The physical abuse was disappointing...footballers...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 6:19 pm

  • RD,
    Thanks for posting my request!

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at May 03, 2008 6:41 pm

  • Wow that was mighty brave of him!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 8:50 pm

  • I must say if I say if i saw an Englishman saying Paterson was shit then I would probably make jokes and annoy him but violence is shocking
But then again imagine a celtic fan walking down Govan to Ibrox saying Ferguson was shit, then there would be mass riots and probably be a few deaths at least many injuries.

Im sure u can compare rugby to football in ur own ways but Im Scottish hence the comparisons

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 04, 2008 12:50 am

  • Unfotunately he is a cheat, remember the world cup against france he conceded 2 penaltys at least for being a cheater.
And as for being worlds greatest back row forward.........Richard Hill has that thanks!
Violence is shocking in rugby and it just goes to show what NZ ers are really like

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 04, 2008 1:15 am

  • i wore a wallabies jersey and cap around christchurch but nothing happened too me - it was the off season though and i didn't have some sighn around my neck!!, but this is hilarious!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 04, 2008 3:24 am

  • Fair enough all the verballing he got for wearing the sign but the pushing and shoving was just moronic and makes you wonder what sort of idiots live in Christchurch.

In my experience New Zealanders are wonderfully friendly people but, as has been pointed out, they have NO sense of humour when it comes to rugby.

By Blogger Lobes, at May 04, 2008 7:54 pm

  • hahah! I love this show! it's absolutely hilarious! anyone lucky enough to see it will understand...ummm bill and ben, good stuff!

as for everyone else, i think you need to appreciate the humour of the idea...

By Blogger George, at May 05, 2008 4:20 am

  • captain Tackles - one of the greatest no.7s to ever don a rugby shirt. I think people get confused between cheating and being a fantastic player. I don't blame you - hes freakin' good at his job.

By Blogger boomshanka, at May 06, 2008 1:38 am

  • It's a great shame to see the New Zealand public behave the way they did on this. It's a fucking game at the end of the day, and because someone has a sign, does not mean that you get physical, even if you don't agree with it.

And yes, McCaw is a cheat, and a very good, if not the best No. 7 in the world right now.
You cannot blame McCaw for cheating, as it goes hand in hand with being a number 7... The way I see it is if you can get away with it, do it...
If he started getting pinged for it a lot more often, you'd see him change his style of play. He'd be a fool for not cheating, when he knows he can get away with it!

Kiwi's need to get a sense of humour though- Christchurch seems like a very inviting place...NOT! Was good how the tv people edited out the gills and webbed hands of the locals... inbreeding... never a good thing ;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 9:29 pm

  • "he's lucky to still be alive", all the newzealanders on that video were all talk, it was only one bloke at the end that had a little dig at him! puuuusays

best one was that woman calling him a wanker....obviously hadnt realised she walks like a pigeon

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 18, 2008 3:27 pm

  • McCaw is SUPPOSED be a cheat - and he is the best at it. He is good at everything. Good 7s all live on the edge, Kiwis should know that better than most, if he's offside/slowing the ball he is doing his job.

By Blogger Unknown, at June 23, 2008 1:39 pm

  • Basically McCaw is a cheat BUT if the ref doesn't see it, then it's fair game so you take what you can get, McCaw is just playing the game, i mean i cheat when i can as well who doesn't, i also cheat in monopoly when i can, its just a game;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 27, 2008 5:27 pm

  • Hahaha you guys are all a joke!!!
He got pushed by 3 or 4 people wowow, he would of been seen by about 100, ooo people please think!!! Every country is as bad or worst!! Jugde New Zealand from it hahaha, it is safer and more friendly than most countries in the world!! Christchurch being one of the nicest ive been in!!!
Richie gives penalties away like all players, but is is the best player at the break down!!

Who ever commented about the world cup quarter final is a joke, that ref was the worst ref, no wonder he was dropped from internations!!! All of you need to be more honest, your shit does stink

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 01, 2008 11:49 am

  • Some of you really need to go top yourselves! The crowd were good natured so f off!
If that was done in England he would have been stabbed to death by football fans and if it was in south africa he would have been smacked within minutes so get off your high horse and stop talking shite you morons!
Ans Shalk Burger has nothing on McCaw.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 06, 2008 10:55 am

  • he is a cheat and so is williams

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 16, 2008 2:56 pm

  • Just caught this video so apologies for the late comment, but at least I've seen the idiotic stuff that's gone down so far. Please note that this video was made by NZers for a NZ audience which suggests to any intelligent person that the Kiwis' sense of humour about themselves and rugby is in good shape. Also, obviously the people just smiling or laughing as they passed by are edited out, it's for TV, understand?!! And every rugby culture in the world has it's jerks and idiots and I bet yours does too, whoever you are, so get off your high horses.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 06, 2008 9:15 am

  • Its only cheating if the ref blows you for it. Watch Michael Jordan in basketball he would take two quick steps before dribbling the ball. They were too quick for the ref to see.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 07, 2008 5:03 pm

  • hahahaha that was some funny shit man i didn't think we were so nasty lolz mccaw is the man he aint no cheat i don't see how people can say that when the games ref'd by many different refs who all think the same way

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 18, 2008 10:40 pm

  • to the people saying it gives a bad impression of nz fans, he probably stood there as around 35 thousand walked in to the standium and there were only a handfull who reacted well enough to make tv, i mean come on!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 20, 2008 10:18 am

  • yeah I seen the skit on pulp sports and laughed my ass off. Those guys are fucking funny

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2008 2:46 am

  • cant believe how aggresive the people were!! following the wrong sport!! u can be as passionate as u lke but NEVER violent!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2008 11:54 am

  • At the start it was good and it got better but,

it dosn't matter were he went people wpuld of got violent, maybe more so in other countries or places within those countries.

But Australian people don't really have a forward or a player for that matter with the same respect and popularity of McCaw.

And SA has burger.... i can think of a thousand things to say about burger....

    (cough Hair cough)

    (cough teeth cough)

But all in all they both great players because they get away with it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2008 3:10 am

  • hahahaha stupid kiwis always taking things to seriously

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2008 6:27 am

  • Very very brave! I have to say as an Englishman that Richie is one of the best back row ever! Nearly as good as Richard Hill and Niel Back were in their day :) I also don't think that you can judge New Zealand on this evidence alone! How long was that guy out for and they only showed 4 minutes of footage!!! By the way for those of you who think this would happen in England you are very much mistaken!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2008 11:42 pm

  • me and a mate went to see the lions tour in new zealand and managed to get tickets to the super 14 semi-final in christchurch before. we wore our lions shirts expecting some friendly banter, instead we both got spat on numerous times! that somes up how the kiwis are about rugby!idiots!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 24, 2008 3:02 pm

  • if were idiots, how come we whitewashed the lions on the tour?

wuld u like 2 rephrase ur comment?
    hahahaha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 25, 2008 10:51 am

  • Having spent a month in NZ following the British and Irish Lions on their last tour I know how this guy feels. The only trouble or verbal goading I saw was coming from Kiwi supporters. I wish this intimidatory mentality between fans was kept out of rugby.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 27, 2008 12:36 am

  • I'm sure it's just a minority of nasty individuals but the Kiwi supporters seam particularly bad.
As they where when I was watching the Lions in 05.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 27, 2008 12:48 am

  • "Who was lucky to still be alive" amazing!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 18, 2009 9:55 am

  • Richie McCaw - 70 tests - 70 points (10 tries, 0 conversions, 0 penalties, 0 drop goals)

    So not a cheat!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 20, 2009 11:31 pm

  • All the people who play rugby will know what all looseys are like in the game. If they have a ref that will let them get away with anything the good looseys will just keep doing it all game long while getting away with it. But it does help being captain getting away with more :p
