Midweek Madness - The old ball in the jersey trick

A few weeks back in the fiercely contested match between Georgia and Spain at the Tbilisi National Stadium in Georgia, there was a hilarious incident from the big Lelos lock, the likes of which has never been witnessed on the international stage I'm sure.

Last seen on the school playground, or perhaps even in your own backyard, the old hide the ball in the shirt and run with it trick is one that if done correctly, will cause confusion in the ranks of the opposition and earn you those much needed extra yards in your quest to head to the tryline.

This is a slight variation on sticking the ball up your own jersey, but just as effective if done properly, as you'll see in this rare footage from the game that was played in front of an impressive attendance of over 20 000 people.

Georgia's Mamuka Gorgodze made the tackle, grabbing hold of the Spanish fullbacks jersey, before ripping it off him, ball and all, and setting off downfield.

He got away with it for a fair while too, before making the pass to his teamate that was just too obvious and got spotted by the ref.

Georgia won the European Nations Cup with this 22-20 victory over Spain, and Gorgodze actually scored three tries in this match - although I'm told they were of the more tradtional variety.

  • this happened to us on one of our 1st XV games and the ref allowed play to go on. very amusing...

  • HAHAHA! I WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF HE KICKED THE BALL IN JERSEY - WOULD IT LAND PERFECTLY? I WATCHED THE GAME BEETWEN GEORGIA AND PORTUGAL EARLIER THIS YEAR - GREAT ATTACKING RUGBY - THERE IS ONLY ONE LITTLE PROBLEM - THEY SEEM TO HAVE 3-5 CAMERAS BUT USE ONLY 1 CAMERA - THE WIDE ANGLE - THEY ALSO USE THIS CAMERA AND ANGLE FOR TV-REPLAYS - THERE WERE 2 QUESTIONABLE TRIES AND THEY WERE BOTH AWARDED EVEN THOUGH REFS COULD NOT SEE IT PERFECTLY SO I GUESS DIVISION 1 OF EURPOEAN RUGBY DOES NOT HAVE VIDEO-REF.

  • Doh. video not available

20,000 at that game? That's great the Georgians can draw that many. Being in the USA, the crowds for rugby suck.

  • remember seeing something similar in super14 in the last few years, though the ref pulled it back immediately.

  • Pablo G-H:

A few years back, the UAR (Argentina) asked for a law ruling regarding headers.

Whereas you cannot intentionally throw or slap the ball into touch, we all know you can kick it into touch.

The ruling stated that it is actually legal to intentionally head the ball into touch!

I would imagine at the header would simply be a play of the ball, but without a knock-on. However, any teammate ahead of the player heading it is in an offside position, and must get (or be placed) onside before playing it.

Still, nothing like some latin flair on the rugby pitch.

  • The Georgian commentator goes wild... well, not quite. Would have loved to hear the reaction of some Aussie commentators.

  • Cheyanquí, vid is available dude.. just refresh your browser. Seems to be a common Youtube problem with embedded videos.. so in future if it happens, just refresh, and it should play fine. :)

Lol @ Sandi's quiet subdued 'i did not see i had the caps lock on....'
    hehe

Speaking of headering the ball, you guys must have seen the Francisco Bosch header try on here? That's a classic!

  • I played against this guy when we were 18, my team served as a sparing partner against Georgia during the under 20 world cup in France a few years ago. We were kind of freaked out. He was just 40cm taller than us.

  • yeah, I'd like to echo the comment about the attacking style of the rugby, I wouldn't mind watching some of that live if the whole game flows like that. bet it's pretty passionate stuff too.

  • Quick question, if he had made it over the line and placed the ball down, would it have been a try because the actual ball wouldnt have made contact with the ground. any ideas?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 02, 2008 9:11 pm

  • good question Goodie... I'd say for arguments sake its held up, i mean if someone can be tackled by their jersey, then lets say the jersey can hold up a try haahh
