The Barbarians down South Africa

matt giteau tryA star studded Barbarians side took on the World Champion South Africans at Twickenham on Saturday. For the Barbarians there was a sense of revenge on the cards. The opportunity to claim the scalp of a World Champion side is something every international player dreams of. And, they weren't disappointed.

The Springboks, who featured only 5 of the World Cup Final team, just weren't up for it, and the Baa Baa's came out on top convincingly, winning the game 22-5.
Missing leadership and key players, the Springboks gave coach Jake White a disappointing farewell to his successful four years in charge.

Jason Robinson brought down the curtain on his international career with a fantastic display of attacking fullback play that epitomised his long, distinguished career. Robinson was simply sublime with ball in hand. He received an emotional standing ovation from the large Twickenham crowd, every one of which were applauding the great man and his great career.

For the South Africans, a poor performance from a group of guys who've either played too much rugby of late, or in some cases - too little. A game too far. Second Rower Barend Pieterse starting at number 6 in place of Schalk Burger just about summed up the day.

Well done to the Barbarians though. Good to see that despite talk of certain players not being able to be released, they managed to put together a very strong side and showed that the Barbarian rugby tradition is alive and well.

  • That is some beautiful rugby from the baa baas, the pick up by Nonu and Giteau's hands on the first try made me tingle.

The Barbarians are a wonderful tradition that should be kept alive, true advocates for all that is running rugby.

  • I was at this game, it was great to see this kind of rugby being played, hard to single anyone out.

Great to see Jason Robinsons last game and Martin Williams was just amazing

agree with the guy above, the baa baa's is an amazing tradition and one we need to keep

  • i was watching this game, second row bk from the pitch and dressed as monk!! it was a momentous occasion and a brilliant match!!

ther has been a lot of tlk about droppin da baa baa's team but surely reagans defiance and the truly inspirational performance is enough evidence to keep the team alive? i agree with the others it is a wonderful tradition that we must keep!!

congratulations to jason robinson! he was superb through out the match, he is still a threat to any defence and ther is no one that can match his cross union-league success. a legend

  • A well organised team, especially one whose squad has just one a world cup, should be able to beat a scratch team who only trained together for 4 days. Don't do an England!

  • granted, Billy Whizz was the most electrifying runner the world has ever seen.

  • martyn williams was awesome in this game, wales are gonna miss him. As a welshman i'm so glad to see the back of jason Robinson, but he has been awesome to watch over the years...

baa baa's rugby is awesome, and i always look forward to the games.

  • The up and under by Williams was sweet. So was Git's try, Good to see the Baa Baas playing fine rugby despite players being held out.

  • Thank God the traditions of Barbarians are alive and well. In the professional era dominated by money and trophies, it is good to see the Baa-Baas still playing great rugby just for the sheer hell of it. They still have that brilliant honour about them, and for most young players even now (Danny Cipriani and Olly Barkley have both said this among others) playing for them is the pinnicle of their career simply because the BaaBaas only invite the best to play. Well done all, long may the Barbarians continue.
    PS Jason Robinson = legend.

  • To the rugbydump guys,

Surely there is a need for a Jason Robinson best of? That would be an electrifying compilation and would be massively popular from the looks of things. You could do League and Union highlights, loads of greta runs, great tries, tackles, those crisp takes on up and unders that he never seemed to drop...
Come on it would be wicked!

  • I was there and the game was good spirited. It was my first visit to Twickenham and it is certainly not my last, sublime!
That vid missed out a superb tackle from Jerry and Joe on one of the SA.
Jerry and Joe had fantastic games but in my opinion Ma' Nonu should've been man of the match he was making runs like that all game.
The man of the ,match went to Martin Williams who I am sure Wales wish they had had last week but serves them right.
Me and my friend were sitting right infront of some SA and 1 of them said "There are too many Welsh players, this is the Welsh rugby team," then he started cheering, "Go on Wales." Late into the second half when the England players started coming on he said something wish should have earned him a smack in the face despite it being quite funny, "If they keep bringing English players on we're gonna win"

As I said in the other babas post (as bye bye robinson) the SA hugly outnumber us and we mostly pissed! It was a great game.
    Bye Bye Billy Wizz!!1 :)

  • Im guessing the guy with the Barum comment is part of Barnstaple RFC? any news on Collins return for boxing day? Would definately enjoy meeting him/rucking him out the way (LOL)

    so yeh any news?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2007 7:27 pm

  • Ma'a Nonu, nuff said.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2007 7:28 pm

  • Well as everybody said, great game and traditions of Rugby Union.

Btw, the Robinson Highlight would be really, really appreciated...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2007 8:29 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2007 8:45 pm

  • do you think it would be possible to get a collection of jason robinson up here
    wish i could've been there

    some fantastic rugby played though

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2007 8:56 pm

  • it surely is great to see the baa baa's playing, i have wanted to catch some of their games since i first heard of them, and this vid has been great
i couldnt watch the game (or any game for that matter) cause i live in canada, we have one channel that shows some games, but its mostly a blasted football(we call it soccer here) channel, so to you in europe and the southern hemisphere, dont take watching the games for granted

and to the person who said they may stop the lions, i highly doubt that will happen
witht he support this baa baas game got i know they will have more soon, so i doubt they will cut that team either

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 04, 2007 12:55 am

  • The Baa-baas are finished. Clubs don't send players and the games are fake: they don't tackle, you realize also watching the video.
It's really a pity, but in the pro era there is no space for Barbarians

By Blogger Unknown, at December 04, 2007 2:55 am

  • the barbarians we bill round for years to come

PS: can anyone tell me the lineup i missed the game and cant tell by there faces!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 04, 2007 7:10 am

  • rocky elsom scored a try too didnt he?? not good enuff for the website?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 04, 2007 1:27 pm

  • I love seeing these kinda games, i know there will always be scuffles but there is nothing on the line but a good game of rugby, i mean i know SA have the World cup reputation to live up to, but here its just two teams playing a great game. its like a school reunion match, these are all old faces (and new) and they make a pretty legendary *All Stars* team. and its nice to see the top World Class players form an awesome team.

Just a shame Collins has those ridiculous Barney socks on ;) cya on boxing day guys!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 04, 2007 3:29 pm

  • No tackling? I have *never* seen a Barbarians side defend like these guys did. I suspect this is just a side effect of the increased focus on defense in the game - praise be to rugby league for that. Examples? Well, even from the two videos here:

Mr Shanklin's tackle, with the Marshall follow up as well as Rokocoko's tackle on Kankowski were two great awareness related defensive moves. Couple that with Martyn Williams' (more obvious) constant hits along with some fierce counter-rucking from the center line showed a fairly high quality of defensive rugby from the side.

Granted, you want to play a more open game at Barbarian testamonials, and South Africa probably suffered a bit from that. It's also probably true that it's hard to defensively coach a team when you don't have much time together and some are suffering from 24 hour travel delays; but with good players and with the increased awareness of defense in the game, it shouldn't be a problem.

And I think the Barbarians do deserve their place in the modern game - as long as they sharpen up communication with the clubs (who do, let's face it, pay the players their wages). We have a many great traditions in our wonderful sport and it'd be a shame to lose this one. Where else would Justin Marshall, Martyn Williams, Matthew Giteau and Jason Robinson play together?
