Gurthro Steenkamp's contender for hit of the year

The Blue Bulls smashed the Boland Kavaliers 69-19 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening in a Currie Cup match that was jam packed with action, featuring tries a plenty, but not without the odd huge hit to rub salt into the wounds.

The half time score sat at 38-0, and by the 55th minute the home team had notched up 11 tries, prompting them to take their foot off the gas slightly, allowing the Kavaliers to run in three consolation tries of their own.

The physical nature of the Bulls, combined with the passionate (sometimes hostile) crowd, make Loftus Versfeld a very difficult place for any team to visit. That intimidation factor, combined with a pack of gorilla's waiting to rip your head off, means that smaller unions like Boland are normally on a hiding to nothing when playing away in Pretoria.

This hit by burly Springbok and Bulls prop Gurthro Steenkamp is no doubt a contender for hit of the season, as he absolutely laid into Kavalier replacement Cecil Kemp.

it was a bit rugby league. the best tackles are a bit lower - this one was defintitely a 'hit' as suggested in the title.
when i first saw it i thought a prop on a full-back and i wasn't surprised. if your a skinny back and you run into a monster front-rower then this should happen every time but cecil kemp is supposed to be a lock?! he doesn't look solid enough... at least he certainly doesn't in this clip!

dont go shouting 'the biggest hit of the year'! i mean cmon the guy was trying to dance around people...slightly off balance and he practically runs into the prop? all steenkamp had to do has shrug his shoulders!

still not trying to take away from the hit....sure looked dramatic

Yes. I absolutely agree with BD and came here to say the same thing. He was dancing around trying to be elusive and was off balance. He did not even have time to (lean into /brace for )the tackle.

Great hit all the same. Im sure he got a few free brews landing on his table for that one.

sorry guys above but i disagree, Vickerys hit on Olivier Magne a few years back seen on TSRB was similar, a back row dancing caught by a big lad, good effort catching the smaller man (a problem many of us tubbies encounter) and he hit him hard as you can see by his legs being at 90 to his body so definately a contender, in my humble opinion anyway!
