Gurthro Steenkamp's contender for hit of the year

The Blue Bulls smashed the Boland Kavaliers 69-19 at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening in a Currie Cup match that was jam packed with action, featuring tries a plenty, but not without the odd huge hit to rub salt into the wounds.

The half time score sat at 38-0, and by the 55th minute the home team had notched up 11 tries, prompting them to take their foot off the gas slightly, allowing the Kavaliers to run in three consolation tries of their own.

The physical nature of the Bulls, combined with the passionate (sometimes hostile) crowd, make Loftus Versfeld a very difficult place for any team to visit. That intimidation factor, combined with a pack of gorilla's waiting to rip your head off, means that smaller unions like Boland are normally on a hiding to nothing when playing away in Pretoria.

This hit by burly Springbok and Bulls prop Gurthro Steenkamp is no doubt a contender for hit of the season, as he absolutely laid into Kavalier replacement Cecil Kemp.

I don't need to say much more about it. Just watch the vid.

By Blogger Anarchangel, at September 16, 2008 5:51 pm

  • that commentator butchers the clip!
it really adds to a hit when u have the commentators screaming going OHHH OHHH WHAT A HIT! OH MY GOD!!!!
    still some hit tho! haha

By Anonymous chumation, at September 16, 2008 5:57 pm

  • Anarchangel - Yes, they're trialling it in the Currie Cup. You can see a video and article about it here

Chumation - it does need the Greg Martin 'AAAAWWWWWWWWW!'

By Blogger RD, at September 16, 2008 6:01 pm

  • it was a bit rugby league. the best tackles are a bit lower - this one was defintitely a 'hit' as suggested in the title.
when i first saw it i thought a prop on a full-back and i wasn't surprised. if your a skinny back and you run into a monster front-rower then this should happen every time but cecil kemp is supposed to be a lock?! he doesn't look solid enough... at least he certainly doesn't in this clip!

By Anonymous felix, at September 16, 2008 6:30 pm

  • backs, never run in to the fat boys on the pitch! You´re not built for it, unless you´re a monster like Lomu or Tuilagi, or ma´nonu, or, well you get the picture.

By Anonymous Ollie, at September 16, 2008 6:47 pm

  • woah woah woah rugbydump........

dont go shouting 'the biggest hit of the year'! i mean cmon the guy was trying to dance around people...slightly off balance and he practically runs into the prop? all steenkamp had to do has shrug his shoulders!

still not trying to take away from the hit....sure looked dramatic

By Anonymous bD, at September 16, 2008 7:40 pm

  • Big hit yes...

Any chance of getting Matt Banahan's tackle on James Simpson-Daniel at the weekend? I'd say that was close to this one...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 16, 2008 7:55 pm

  • Yes. I absolutely agree with BD and came here to say the same thing. He was dancing around trying to be elusive and was off balance. He did not even have time to (lean into /brace for )the tackle.

Great hit all the same. Im sure he got a few free brews landing on his table for that one.

  • sorry guys above but i disagree, Vickerys hit on Olivier Magne a few years back seen on TSRB was similar, a back row dancing caught by a big lad, good effort catching the smaller man (a problem many of us tubbies encounter) and he hit him hard as you can see by his legs being at 90 to his body so definately a contender, in my humble opinion anyway!

  • try savers and rib breakers 11 ???

  • ha ha reminds me of when chris patterson gets the ball now, dances about a bit without actually doing anything then gets mullered, mind you he's the best kicker in the world so we'll keep him!

By Anonymous roddymac, at September 17, 2008 1:50 am

  • The key to running at the fat guys is to run AT the fat guys. That's why God (Shane Williams) invented the sidestep.

Nothing in this comment was meant to be taken 100% seriously.

By Anonymous Sidestep, at September 17, 2008 3:42 am

  • That was a fine hit, not high IMO

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 17, 2008 2:31 pm

  • I don't even think it's a contender to be fair.

Nice tackle, probably as far as it goes.

  • That's pathetic. Do they think that by doing this we're going to suddenly sign up on their site?? Ha, f*ckin americans. All about the money.

    - No offense to you nice american rugby fans out there. :)

At least I got to see this hit before it went down I guess..
