Edwin Cocker hit from the London Sevens - NZ vs Arg

The London leg of the IRB Sevens World Series kicked off today at Twickenham with a game that could have so easily gone wrong for champions New Zealand.

Argentina, despite conceding an early try, pushed them all the way and were leading 7-5 until a last minute try from the All Blacks stole the victory and broke the hearts of the men in blue.

Despite being close, the game itself wasn't great, so we've picked out this big hit from New Zealand player Edwin Cocker (pronounced Coacker kids).

It looks to be a vicious shoulder but the referee doesn't see it that way and allows it. He did wrap his one arm around as much as possible, while off balance, so maybe the intent wasn't there. I'm sure opinions will be varied though, as the commentator for one seemed to think it was 'a shoulder into the face'. Peculiar.

Note: We'll do our best to bring you the rest of the top action from this weekends Sevens in London, so keep a lookout for it throughout the next few days.

  • The commentator is lewis moody, he was actually very interesting and the tackle is a shoulder to the face when you look at it closely.

  • Nah themightyham there's no way he makes contact with his face. I'd say if he did the guy wouldn't have got up right away, and the ref would have seen it.

Agreed? Or are you a Moody fan and therefore defending him? Kinda sounds like it...

Anyway who cares what the commentator says - big hit and at first glance definitely looked like a shoulder that should have been penalised. Probably would have been in union - not sure what the Sevens stance is on this type of hit though.

  • sevens is a variation on union not league so the same tackle rules aply. this one however i don't see a lot wrong with. he is slightly off balance and does well to get his arm up. it is a bit of a shoulder but that's the part of your body you are supposed to use! the rules say you have to make and effort to use your arm too which he does. he also makes contact under or on the arm of the argentine so it's DEFINITELY NOT HIGH. Moody probably has wet dreams about making tackles like this one and he's probably just being biased against NZ as they are favourites.

  • I thought the tackle was quite ok actually. He didn't make much of an attempt to wrap up though.

  • On a side note; I think moody has a natural commentator voice, I can see him doing that when he retires.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2008 2:15 pm

  • It didn't look like a high tackle
    but he certainly didn't wrap

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2008 2:21 pm

  • LOL at Moody. There is not a chance in hell that he connected to the face.

  • NZ always been dirty

  • FAIR, he hit him chest hight an tried to wrap the arm, good tackle , fair do's 2 th argentine for getting up so quickly

By Anonymous EL nino, at May 25, 2008 3:21 pm

  • looked like a shoulder to the sturnum or even shoulder. defo not the face, the guy would not have been bounced the way he was if it was the face. he musta hit something more solid.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2008 5:07 pm

  • brilliant tackle!

By Anonymous minstrel boy, at May 25, 2008 6:06 pm

  • it was not a shoulder to the face the should hit is chest, his head rocked forward into the top of the shoulder after the original contact so that is fine...could of been more arms in the takle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 26, 2008 2:20 am

  • If Butch James has done this exact same tackle, all you Kiwi and Aussie monkeys would be jumping up and down in a frenzy because he didn't use his arms.

But since its a Kiwi... its Fair.

By Anonymous Asterix, at May 26, 2008 8:08 am

  • it was a fair tackle, no question. it was not a shoulder charge because his arm was raised. you should put some up from the finnal because there were some big hits and the ref made some questionable decsions.

By Anonymous martin, at May 26, 2008 2:36 pm

  • are you kidding?!
it was as illegal as they come!!! you have to make an effort to wrap the arms around! It doesn't matter if it was high or not, it's still an illegal shoulder barge. Legal in league but this is union.

By Anonymous Dan, at May 26, 2008 5:03 pm

  • ilegall,but no doubt huge!

By Anonymous rugbyfreak, at May 26, 2008 9:36 pm

  • no way was it illegal, some refs don't like it, but it is a dangerous sport. a shoulder charge is when your arm is by your side like when u drop your shoulder into a tackle. stopping shoulder charges and clotheslines means that is evens up the tackle situation between both players involved. the tackler in that situation against a bigger man would hav bounched off. the little guy always gets hit hardest, i know.

By Anonymous martin, at May 27, 2008 12:42 am

  • I know what a shoulder charge is...
    a huge hit...

By Anonymous rugbyfreak, at May 27, 2008 2:19 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 10, 2008 7:02 pm

  • it's not high at all, just the impact of the hit throws his head forward!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 15, 2008 7:52 pm
