Felipe Contepomi Penalty blown back over!

The Friday night Magners League fixture between Leinster and Connacht will always be remembered for the 20th minute penalty kick from Argentinian flyhalf Felipe Contepomi.

Contepomi was on target with a 18-metre penalty, but the wind was so strong it blew the kick back out through the posts and had referee George Clancy reaching for his rulebook before he confirmed the score.

Truly one of the most bizarre things you'll ever seen in a rugby field.

  • the irb rules say that if the ball goes over the bar between the posts, its a goal, no matter whether it touches the ground the other side or not

  • This happened in an Australian Rules u/18 game a few years back, a kick from about 25 metres out didn't make the distance landed about 15 metres in front where it was kicked.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 03, 2008 1:14 pm

  • Wow. Happened to me during kicking warm-ups on a day just before lightning and hail cancelled the match 5 minutes in.

The law is actually consistent with other kicks, like 22m drop-outs and 50m re-starts. If the ball crosses over the 22m (or 10m line) and is then blown back, play on.

The only question I would ask on these kicks is if the ball must simply touch the plane (like touching a tryline) or if the entire ball must cross over the entire line?

I would imagine the entire ball must cross over, because otherwise, if a ball hits the goalpost, it is already touching the plane.

  • A bit off topic and very highly unlikley i know, but can you score a drop goal off of a kick off or 22m drop?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 12, 2008 7:30 am

  • Unbelievable

  • I remembr attending a Level 1 course conducted by Dave Keane (IRFU)and he was covering this particular ruling. I asked him (tongue in cheek)...'what if the wind blows the ball back initially and then it suddenly changes ... and blows it back over again? Will that count as 6 points?' :) Dave told me where to go in colourful terms as we all had a laugh ... lol
