Jean-Philippe Viard hit on Benoit Baby

Clermont got over their disappointment of losing to Sale last weekend by producing a nail biting 24-19 win over Montauban in the Pool A Heineken Cup encounter on Sunday.

Napolioni Nalaga got the visitors off to a flying start by crossing the tryline in the second minute, with Alexandre Audebert adding a second try twenty minutes later.

Four Petre Mitu penalties kept Montauban in touch though before a Antoine Battut gave his side the lead at halftime.

The flying Fijian Nalaga grabbed his second with only seven minutes remaining though, taking the lead and allowing Clermont to keep their European hopes alive.

One of the more painful looking hits in the match was on Clermonts fullback Benoit Baby, who was taken midkick by Montaubans Jean-Philippe Viard.

Baby stayed down for some time afterwards, understandably as he was taken off balance in the air by Viard, who was probably committed to the tackle.

While there is probably a split second when Viard could have possibly pulled out of it, he chose not to, following through as he drove Baby into the ground hard, clearly winding him.

For the pure ‘Arghh that’s gotta hurt’ factor, we thought that this short clip would be worth sharing.

  • What happened to Baby? He started off his international career so well.

  • Good question by anonymous. I think he made his debut as a centre against Ireland at Landsdown... What happened since? Injuries? I know the french have some slightly above average backs:-) but if the beer of that afternoon hasn't fazed my memory too much, he oozed class. Anyone knows the story behind his breakthrough that didn't happen...?

  • Montauban are certainly proving they deserve to be in the tournament. They've got serious guts.

  • Horrible run of injuries and a major loss of form have put his career on hold.

he's still around the French squad but the guy's he's competing against, guys like Yannick Jauzion, are just a step above him.

As for the hit, that's pretty standard in france, they thump you regardless of if you have the ball or not.

The rest of that game was pretty uninspiring to be honest.

  • he's lucky his shoulder didn't get too banged up.

    powerful hit though!

  • My first thought was "there goes the collar bone" .. but the hit looks OK. It's a close call but the tackler doesn't have to pull out just because the guy's shaping to kick.
Watching Viard sprint towards him reminds me of the old story when the ref penalises the tackler and says "you arrived too late" and the tackler says, "but I got there as soon as I could, ref".

  • He kicked and got it away but this was a good example of a modern day centre's tackle...i.e. hit the midriff to tackle man AND ball to stop the movement...

    Ouch...!!!

  • Just looked like he caught him in an awkward moment at mid-stride. Nothing ugly about the intent. Lucky he was not hurt too badly.

  • i have notice that the last two posts have had images of players lying down in pain.
but back to the point not late just a clean hit, and i have to say Baby had himself all to blame for leaving himself open to such a hit.

  • Hard hit =D

Is/was nobady irritated because of the continuing drums? I know they do that in football, it saddens me someone does it during a rugby match because it's really annoying and selfish. They should forbid it in my opinion. Your toughts?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2008 5:12 pm

  • Oldschool, personnally I never noticed they do use drums in football. But in France, rugby supporters often use drums, and for years. It's part of our traditions in rugby, sorry for disturbing your sweet ears.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2008 6:30 pm

  • oldschool, you really got to tell me, how do you relate the terms "drum" and "selfish"?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2008 11:28 pm

  • Some people like to watch the game without that drum being bashed all the time. 2 people can annoy the whole stadion with that or people watching at home. That's what I mean

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2008 8:44 pm

  • got to agree that it's part of the French rugby culture.

Maybe the drum can be incessant. However, I like how many rugby stadia have taken to little brass horn (is it a clarion?) and then everyone yells "allez". Not a bad pickup from RWC 2007 IMHO

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at October 23, 2008 6:50 pm

  • Oldschool, French people love to ear the incessant sound of drums in the stadium, it's making kind of a festive atmosphere, why do you blame them for that??? If you don't like it, don't watch French teams playing or just shut up and accept what you apparently can't understand.
