Super 14 biggest hits of 2007

The 2008 Super 14 kicks off tomorrow with the opening game featuring the Crusaders vs the Brumbies in Christchurch.

The tournament comprises the best teams from South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, and is well know for it high intensity and bruising encounters.

This year, the all new Experimental Law Variations (or ELV's) will be put into practice, which can only speed up the game and hopefully encourage more running rugby.

Last year we saw some incredible big hits throughout the tournament, and I feel this year will be no different. We'll be bringing you all the biggest tackles and best moments from the 2008 tournament, so keep a lookout for them in the upcoming weeks.

Here's a great vid made by Guetteba that features some of the hardest hitting moments from last year. You may have seen some of them on here before, but believe me, they're well worth watching again.

  • yeah awesome video. i'm psyched for the Super 14 this year and hope the sharks can take another step to win the title.
Just one thing: am i the only one who thinks there are way too many players being taken out in the air in this video? these are illegal and dangerous hits that should not be celebrated no matter how spectacular they look.

By Blogger Unknown, at February 14, 2008 11:07 am

  • i agree that players should never be taken out in the air but this awesome video is not a celebration of them, it's just showing what happens at the top level of the game. rugbydump always shows what goes on rather than what we'd like to go on.

by the way as a blues fan it's good to see so many dougie howlett hits in that vid. he will be missed this year but watch out for david smith...

  • Hi from Germany,

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 2:20 pm

  • great video clip

but i also think that a lot of these tackles are dangerous, such like habana on montgomery

could u find a video of benoit baby headkick on o'driscoll? a curious moment

    thanks rugby dump
    (sorry for my froggy english)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 2:22 pm

  • nice stuff. lets go sharks!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 3:11 pm

  • might be nice if the majority of the 'tacklers'had at least made an attempt to use their arms rather than just shoulder charging,eh?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 4:37 pm

  • wow. Videos like this make me smile.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 6:30 pm

  • Is there any need for all the illegal challenges when guys are taken out in the air, hit high, or dumped on their from on high head first?

There are more than enough great, perfectly legal challenges, that are all the more impressive for it. There's loads in that compilation where you can see the ref giving the penalty. There's no excuse for including them.

Any idiot can swing an arm and hit someone high or when they are defenseless in the air. The best tackles are head on hits that overpower the ball carrier LEGALLY.

    Shame.

  • Doug is mad for the big hits!

By Blogger Levi Smith, at February 14, 2008 6:37 pm

  • I'm just wondering who gave the SH permission to change the rules to our game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 9:20 pm

  • Great compilation gents..

2:36 -- the minute you see that pass leave the scrummie's hands, you worry... Thank God Brian Lima wasn't on the end of that delivery!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 9:57 pm

  • though i haven't watched that much super 14 i think its one of the fastest games of rugby there is to play. and having big hits (even not legal ones) shows what class players can do.
i have to say being a disliker of lotie tugiri (donno if its spelt right) that last part of the clip with lotie getting smashed is nice to see
hopes its a good super14 season

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2008 10:53 pm

  • Go the Hurricanes!

Though i am an admirer of the human wrecking ball from the Chiefs...

don't know about the new rules! i bet there's plenty of debate about it after this weekend!

    good work RD.

  • Where I live (Sydney), they use the rules for the local club rugby comp and they were great, fast flowing rugby. Much nicer to watch.

    Good clip, some huge hits.

    I'm a Bulls supporter :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 5:42 am

  • sick vid, i'm going to the Reds V Highlanders tn and that vid siked me up!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 5:53 am

  • what about where kurtley beale is kicked in the face? this vid shows that super 14 is tonnes better to europe , no matter how many of our players they steal

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 7:25 am

  • Being in Europe it's hard to watch S14 actions and I had forgotten how physical it is down there... I am actually worried for Michalak. I really hope he will avoid all those nasty tackles, and stay away from injuries.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 6:11 pm

  • some of those hits were unbelievable, but then some were like totally lame, the first few werent realli big hits mor elike soft attempts, that said i now rate ali williams and the rest of the blues alot higher than i have ever done before

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 6:33 pm

  • Why the bitching about the tackles?
its called a dump tackle, try it sometimes, very effective, stops all their forward momentum, drives them back, and can effect the turnover
i am not justifying spear tackles (head or neck first part to cotact ground), they are extremely dangerous, and i know there are some in this video

i still am a firm hater of the ELVs and i think its yet more they are taking away from forwards, there will be fewer lineouts etc, plus the large front rows will be forced to become smaller in order to keep up better

great video rugbydump, dont listen to the know nothings that dont like good physical contact

PS- SH rugby still isnt superior to NH rugby, and with the ELVs, never will be

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 9:33 pm

  • idn't it strange how fella's always seem to have two different opinions about an action that is biomechanically quite similar in style, with just the forward momentum in one bein shown by the hitter, and one having forward momentum provided by the attacker? physics supports the phrase fortune favors the brave, and i think the two different opinions come from hitters, and from netball players. its y i take my skirt off when i play, right?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 16, 2008 5:27 am

  • chris parberry , i am not a know nothing i am a know quite alot, hence why im a referee and an amateur player, and im not talking about the dump tackles being lame i talking bout the first two hits fomr the sharks which were very lame imdeed
i agree tho the ELV's wont last, why change the game when it has developed so beautifully, these laws are goin ot eradicate the game as we know it and eventually turn it into league

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 16, 2008 10:43 pm

  • ELVs are gonna be interesting no doubt; as usual a minority can't handle 'change'.

great vid rugbydump - we're gonna miss Dougie here in Punta del Jafa

By Blogger boomshanka, at February 17, 2008 3:07 am

  • na not really atall kid................... and to be fair the onli english team ive played reciently was sedbergh nd they were supposed to be ur best schools side nd we wiped the floor with them so the standard at ur agegroup is clearly exceedingly crap so ur lowly achievments mean fuckall in my books

By Blogger Levi Smith, at March 04, 2008 8:28 pm

  • why is it that every time the crusaders were shown they were on the receiving end of the big hits?? not one was a delivered blow from them. was it a lack of hard tackling that year or they just didnt make the cut into the vid??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2008 8:10 pm

  • im english..and i gotta say..the standard of our rugby over here is seriously lacking. watching these clips makes me cringe! why cant we breed em like this over here!..
