Andy Goode high tackle on Brian O'Driscoll

The second of the big incidents in the Leicester vs Leinster game, this high tackle sparked a scuffle that had players running from all over to join.

Andy Goode almost took Brian O'Driscoll's head off with this high clothes line and then followed it up by trying to plant the Irishman's head into the Welford Road turf.

I have no idea what sparked this. Strange for a player to dish out a high tackle and then attack the guy he just nailed.

Goode gets his deserved Yellow Card which causes his team to be down to 13 players temporarily, after the Julian White punch.

  • Must have been niggles from the earlier tackle that Driscoll made on Goode. Or he called his Mum a slag? LOL!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2008 3:53 pm

  • Not as bad as it first seems.

Yes, dangerours tackle, probably not intentional. And the bit after? WEll Goode was just going for the ball, he was on his feet and entilted to.
These kind of things happen all the time.

  • These French refs remind me of the Quebecois goalie Denis Lemieux (from the greatest hockey movie ever "Slap Shot")

You don't do that. Oh, no. Never, never. - Why not? - Against the rules. You stupid when you do that, some English pig with no brains...

  • That is really bizarre. It was like he was looking to be sent off. at first i thought he was just trying to get the ball and let his adrenalin get the better of him but on second viewing looks like he was going for o'driscoll on the floor. Very dirty.

  • I bet O'Driscoll had been winding him up all game, he's a gobby little git. Andy Goode has a pretty short fuse and perhaps isnt the smartest bloke so he let O'Driscoll get to him, bit silly really. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pleased to see Brian 'goldenballs' being a lot less lippy after that!

  • O'Driscoll one of the greats. Andy not so Goode not so good.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2008 5:41 pm

  • andy is just a fat out half that will never play for england, such a dumb ass

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2008 5:52 pm

  • Im sorry but it is clear the tackle was intentional and this is backed up by the fact that Goode went straight for O'Driscoll and not the ball after. I think Goode just wanted 10 minutes in the bin to look for the reminence of his pre match kebab! He is a massive Kebab fan I have seen this 1st hand

  • Is it me or does it seem that BOD is a target everytime he walks on the pitch?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2008 8:15 pm

  • LOL...it was bound to happen.

  • 'goode will never play for england'

strange because he already has, several times, and was man of the match in his last international, against the Irish.

'O'Driscoll is one of the greats, Andy Goode not so good'

No doubt O'Driscoll is more talented and has achieved more, but he was totally OUTCLASSED and OUTMUSCLED on Saturday. He doesn't like it when you get in his face.

O'Driscoll isn't the player he used to be purely because he is too mouthy now as someone has already mentioned. Against the Argies when he scored he jogged back taunting them - he then did nothing the rest of the match. he should focus on his own game before being so arrogant.

  • Goode loves his kebabs! Fat waster!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 12:17 am

  • Goode is Mr Average, so what he got man of the match a year ago, he had a stinker the next game and hasnt put on an England shirt since, literally, there skin tight and he's a fat boy.
BO'D has proven his class internationally both with Ireland and the Lions and has earnt the right to run his mouth to get in the head of the opposition.
High tackle, little bit of a nonsense after, we probable wouldnt be talking about it if it hadnt reduced Leicester to 13 men

  • Fridge are you special?...he didnt even slide up both his hands were round o'driscolls face....and you can clearly see Goode was not going for the ball....seeing as the ball was about half a metre away from BOD's stomach and goode once again had BOD by the face!

BOD is targeted in many games because he is such a key player.

and what is wrong with kebabs :p mmmmmm

How can he be outclassed by the Leicester team? There's no one in that team that even comes close to being as good as O'Driscoll in any position.

Btw, he scored 1 and created the other in the ARgentina game and I'm sure he'll have an excellent 6N.

  • BOD is over rated he can't stand it when your in his face that and hes the first one to whinge to the ref when sum1 says sumthin to him who cares if andy goode is fat hes still better than alot of players out there wouldnt say he shuld play for england but hes still got talent.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 3:57 am

  • goode is a good club player, if you disagree you obviously haven't seen many of his games. Admittedly he does blow hot and cold though.

And all this talk about Goode being fat?! Yeah he's chunky but I doubt Leicester, one of the biggest European clubs, would let their flyhalf be fat. And O'Driscoll isn't exactly slim either, I think he could do with losing a couple of pounds, he looks heavier than he used to.

Hate to say it but whoever said O'Driscoll was outclassed was right - and trust me I hate Leicester. But Andy Goode made more breaks than him in that match and Brian got absolutely nowhere.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 4:05 am

  • 9 caps andy has probly against namibia, georgia, spain, portugal,... and ire as you have pointed out, he is not close to any outhalf in england,

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 7:09 am

  • Dirty tackle, got what it deserved.

BOD can be full of himself, but he is class - Goode isn't in the same league.

If it was Wilkinson, its worth a debate, but you Poms arguing that Goode compares are just being silly.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 10:24 am

  • Sorry who here has argued that Goode is in the same class as O'Driscoll - nobody, read the comments. What has been said is that O'Driscoll isn't the player he used to be and was outplayed in that match. No-one denies his success on the international scene over the years, or his potential though, but he did absolutely nothing of note against Leicester.

And Goode has got 9 caps, against 6 nations opposition, Australia, and South Africa. Not exactly easy stuff.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 1:08 pm

  • "BOD is over rated he can't stand it when your in his face"

I have seen 2 or 3 comments like the above....can you guys all honestly say that you CAN stand it when someone is in your face?!?!?.....no i didnt think so.

In all fairness i can't say id be to appreciative if i had someone hanging off my face....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 1:12 pm

  • "Is it me or does it seem that BOD is a target everytime he walks on the pitch?"

    ---------

    Yeah, I think so too.

I'm beginning to believe that somehow, he deserves what he gets.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 1:21 pm

  • I remember that game when Goode got man of the match against Ireland ! It was hilarious. They announced it over the PA in Twickenham and all the Irish fans (and some of the English too) started laughing. I can't remember if it was just after or before Horgan scored the winning try.

To be fair, like all great players, BOD gets more attention from players and fans alike. He can be a bit mouthy but he is also the captain of Leinster and Ireland so he will be talking to the ref more than most.

I'm pretty sure he can play when defences are up in his face. Otherwise he wouldn't be a professional rugby player.

He's not past it just yet, if you'd been watching his form since returning from his ankle injury you can see a big improvement. I'd give him two more seasons before's past it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 4:14 pm

  • I was at the match and yes it was high, but it wasnt very dangerous. The reaction was only because of all the niggleing before. Did anyone see contepomi's penalty that missed but was given. All match the reffing was poor. Can u get up contepomi's penalty that missed but was given in the same match

  • Oh and does anyone want to start a campaign to ban Will Greenwood from commentating ? He's embarrassingly bad. Even for someone from SKY

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 7:26 pm

  • I'll join the No To Greenwood campaign as long as we throw Stuart Barnes out with him. He gushes embarassingly whenever Dricco or ROG are playing, really cringey stuff. Dricco could be tying his laces at the other end of the pitch and Barnes'll be complementing his granny-knot or messing his trousers over some joke Dricco cracked during the warm-up.
    Say no to Barnes/Greenwood!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 21, 2008 9:48 pm

  • O'Driscoll is sheer class and I think he is just as good as ever. That being said, I am not even Irish, nor a a Leinster fan. I am French, in fact, but I have to admit that I will look out for him in the 6 nations.

Actuallu I cant wait to see him face Florian Fritz in the tournament. It's gonna be some duel.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 22, 2008 2:42 am

  • goode is a grasshole minus g! so is that knobjock white.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 23, 2008 2:29 am

  • ref ruined that game even after failing to hand out a single red for tigers..all the game he talked leicester onside while handing straight whistles to leinster..leicseter better team though on day..could have been one of the great games

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 24, 2008 3:45 am

  • Its funny to read the comments of some clearly dillusional englishmen. I find it embarassing as a rugby fan to watch andy goode. When he gets the ball he leads with his bingo-wings and in defence (If you can call what that is defence) hes taking cheap shots at the opposition. To the people who are calling BOD gobby or saying he isnt the player he used to be. This is plainly because England know that they dont or will ever have anyone to the quality of BOD. And so they shoot him down because there key assets to the 6 nations is a bunch of fat blokes that need someone to tell them exactly how to play the game and a backline that creates nothing...except for a lovely big visa for lesley vaniakolo

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 24, 2008 11:02 pm

  • I'm a pomm and Goode is not so good.
Bod is in a different class, infact, he is the only one person in that class, north or south.
Having just been in two world cup finals the pomm bashing can be easily dismissed. Infact its kinda fun, not so much fun when the team was floundering though.

  • I watched Andy Goode get outclassed by phil godman when edinburgh played leicster and the tigers fans are all dirty!!! Now Godman is not better than Andy Goode but he had a beter game then so just because one player maybe plays better than the other in one game does not mean they are the better player!!! Drico is class and has been the best player in the NH for years! He was the only yes ONLY irish man who could come out of the world cup and hold his head high after for fighting for the green jersey every step of the way!!! Drico is class so dont kncock him!!! + Julian white and andy goode epitomise english rugby thugs that seem to think it is ok to hit people dirty ****'s. So glad leiscter are out as it makes the heinken cup a more excitin tournament!!! Also will andy goode ever be pone of the top try scorers for his country go on two lions tours captain the lions!!! Yes he is mouthy but i seem to remeber the mouthiest captain of all martin johnson being one of the greatest but he could get away with it because he was english!!! Thankyou EBC

  • goode wasnt just going for the ball, he clearly went for o'driscoll's face.i can accept that the high tackle can happen in the heat of the moment but goode's attacking of o'driscoll is ridiculous
