Rough night for Lewis Moody

England played Tonga on friday night at the Parce des Princes in Paris. It was a do-or-die match, with the winner going through to the quarter finals and the loser packing their bags for home.

Tonga packed their bags, but on the way to the final whistle they played their hearts out and were menacingly physical as always. Lewis Moody received the brunt of the knocks, taking two massive hits which would have kept most heavyweight boxers down.

The first of which was purely accidental, but brutal nonetheless.

The second was unfortunately worse than it was probably intented to be, although Moody took the Tongan captains shoulder to the chin and it was very high to start with.

Brutal.

Final score: 36-20 to England.

  • Bloody hell, you look at what he put up with and he didn't leave the field and then you look at some of these footballers who break a nail and then can't play for 6 weeks. he's an inspiration.

  • 2nd comment is written by an absolute retard. are you an italian football player or sumthin.they always seem to get severely injured and are 'forced' to fly (dive) when they make contact with bloody AIR!!! i'd hate to think what nationality you are, must be flipping depressing!! and btw being english is great. • doing stupid comments like mine? or "writing" stupid comments like mine? or are you a retard who doesnt understand the english language?! oh and btw this is an awesome video, and i respect lewis moody for being an awesome flanker who always gives 100%, well nearly always!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 30, 2007 8:05 pm

  • I hate it when girls fight like this on a comments site for a rugby video. Grow up dickheads.

Moody is a legend. A true fighter and great 7. That second challenge deserved a yellow card though i think. Way too high.

  • i agree with you no disrect to the pacific islanders but they just don't know how to keep tackles low. i've never seen a game where a pacific islander hasn't tried to take someone out high i think that must be a key coaching point for the pacific islanders because overall they play some fucking good rugby and the potential is there

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 30, 2007 8:47 pm

  • i dont actually have a dick on my head so how can i be a dick head?!

  • moody got smashed yeah!!!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 01, 2007 1:31 am

  • Tackle seems fine to me.. First contact is to his chest/shoulders, only slips up after that because Moody is going down and Latu's (spelling?) momentum is going up. No swinging arm to the head or anything. Good Tackle

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 01, 2007 3:29 am

  • I agree with James - that tackle was fine, nothing illegal about it, just brutal.

To Anon above talking about PI high tackles, while there have definitely been some bad ones this tournament (Brian Lima anyone?) I don't think the islanders are any worse than anyone else. It's just that the hard hits are such an integral part of the way they play that everyone focuses on them. Also they go for the wrap tackle rather than taking the legs.

This, I reckon, is because of the fast running/passing game they tend to favour and play against each other. Therefore they go for the hit that is going to prevent passing of the ball & continuation of the other side's run. Hence the tendency to go higher and, sometimes, too high.

  • Lewis Moody is a machine! he had an immense game after sitting on the bench at the start of the tournamnet... Totally proved why he should be in the starting lineup. Personally I would play him with Tom Rees, drop Corry.

  • Being a Tigers fan, I get to watch his awesome determination each week. It's a shame that this was his only start for England this RWC.

He is exactly what this team needed from the start

  • sorry men moody not lewsy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 01, 2007 9:47 pm

  • How can you say his ar "slipped up"...if yiou watch closely it does nothing of the sort! I appreciate it is a hard, sometimes brutal game but if tackles like this keep going in then it can only be a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt. Never mind changiong laws, citings etc, the players need to take it upon themselves as professional sportsmen to sort it out.

  • You guys are very poor at spelling the name of the stadiums correctly...
Can't you have a look before writting typos???
We get a typo in almost every post and always on the name of the stadium or the city...

By Blogger Marc-Olivier Meunier, at October 03, 2007 1:45 pm

  • Moody is a a great 7. I try to model my play off him. A good solid player. (I've only been a flanker for a season and a half - transfered from the backs - wanted more contact :D ). I started trying to play like McCaw, but kept getting penalized for going over the top. I've heard they're less strict about that in New Zealand and Australia. Is that right?

Glad England won this one, I was about ready to kill someone if they didn't. Respect for Tonga and all the Pacific Islanders! (Fiji!) Nice hit, although a bit high.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 03, 2007 10:51 pm

  • If you are looking for a great 7, check out Martin Williams World class player shame he's retired! Moody out of his league in this World Cup, he can expext another battering against Australia they will target him also for a shoeing!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 04, 2007 5:14 pm

  • You idiot, Moody is not out of his league, and he definitly wouldnt give a shit about a shoeing he is hard as nails.

    Your an idiot

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 05, 2007 11:40 am

  • lol momeunier did a typo telling people to stop doing typos!! Moodys a great 7 but he will never fill the shoes of the great Neil Back

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 07, 2007 6:43 pm

  • I belive that it is moody who has given Australia the shoeing.
Class player but still no Neil Back

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 09, 2007 7:24 pm

  • errrr- don't you aussies have anything to say? Or mybe you can't get online on the plane?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 10, 2007 4:07 am

  • what an awesome tackle perfectly legal jus slipped up the body as he fell all poms complaining about it its understandable the only time you ever see hits like that is when you play southern hemisphere sides o and when johnny pulls em out lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 11, 2007 4:49 pm

  • It's a shame the real story here is that Lewis Moody got up and played a good game after those hits. Lets not go there though because that would be uncool ... him being English and all. I love the chips that people carry about the English...makes the victories seem more sweet. C'mon England

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2007 7:53 pm

  • Ah, Moody, the mad hound of English rugby. What a bloke.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 24, 2007 5:28 am

  • that was a good tackle

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 01, 2007 2:45 am

  • That was high. If it wasn't a Pacific Islander we'd all be saying that was high. But full credit to Lewis 'Mongo' Moody for getting up and playing. No cheap high hit from a Tongan will stop him.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 25, 2007 7:41 pm

  • lewis moodys a complete idiot - he has everything in his armoury to be a good player but insists on chasing the kick offs/lost causes and getting injured! if he concentrated on the basics he would stay on the field longer and ppl would recognise his skill.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 05, 2008 5:24 pm

  • it was no cheap shot. there was no foul in that tackle, it was a full hit on and moody came 2nd best. All of you seem to miss the skill and determination of Nili Latu, Tongas captain. Tonga had a good world cup run that year and made their country proud.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 16, 2008 11:00 pm

  • England are absolutely shit and would never make to the tri- nations based on their shit quality Englishmen are the most hated in the world which was released Internationally across the Pacific and parts of America.
    FUCKING BOGANS!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 01, 2008 12:43 pm

  • oosh, those are some hard hits!

whoever said something about Martyn Williams - I completely agree, best 7 in the world at the moment in my biased opinion.

By Blogger .......Luke, at May 03, 2008 2:19 pm

  • how is the second hit legal in anyway? first contact is way above shoulder height

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 03, 2008 9:15 pm

  • Lewis Moody's fault for bending down on the 2nd hit I reckon. The only way someone short like Nili Latu could of hit him high was if he bent down.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 3:38 am

  • LoL.. Good hit from Nili Latu, nothing wrong with it or the ref would have blown it up straight away. Moody got nailed, simply as that.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 1:27 am

  • Moody is awsome, a real inspiration.
Did you see in the second tackle, he got clobbered by a few feet as he was on the floor?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 11:02 pm

  • god all you english think moody is awsome!he may be the best no7 england has but hes not a patch on martin williams or richie mcaw.the best no7's in the world by far!oh and that hit was good.a wrap around tackle which dsnt allow the attacker to release the ball, good tactics especially when your on the back foot!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 2:39 pm

  • Moddy is a good, whole hearted player, but he isn't the out and out openside that Backy was for England, or Martyn Williams has been for wales. He was, in my view, the best of England's back row in the world cup. The tackle ended up high as Moody was ducking in and the tackler was jumpung, this meant he was grabbed around the head, that makes it a high tackle! It would have been a good wrap around tackle had he actually wrapped up the ball and not Moddy's head!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 10, 2008 10:13 pm

  • watched that for the first time in a while, no malicious intent at all, but you cant jump and wrap around someones head like that. ouch! good game though

By Blogger timalimimim, at July 07, 2008 12:59 am

  • Nili Latu is like a steam train on that one, aint he?:-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 29, 2008 10:42 am

  • Thats a pretty aggressive hit but, to be fair, it is high. I dont think Latu would incourage his kids to hit like that or like to see them on the recieving end of a high shot like that. If he put his shoulder through Moodys chest it'd be a legit hit and just as impressive!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 18, 2008 11:14 pm

  • I love the comment of the commentator as the clip ends: "...and I think by the end of this game Lewis Moody will need a new nose..."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 24, 2008 12:10 am

  • moody is an inspiration to any wannabe flanker, dats how u put ur body on the line for your team....hero.

    i'm irish aswell
