Percy Montgomery's nightmare vs Clermont

With the ever increasing amount of Southern Hemisphere players plying their trade all across Europe, it's always interesting to follow up and see how they've been doing playing for their new club.

I was sent this footage recently of Springbok World Cup winner Percy Montgomery having an absolute nightmare for his club Perpignan in the south of France.

The game was against Clermont in the Top 14 and as you'll see by this clip, Percy had a few embarrassing moments, namely getting shoved aside by big Napolioni Nalaga, dropping a high ball which resulted in a try, and getting involved amongst the rough stuff with the forwards for whatever reason.

Percy looked far from happy, particularly with the hair pulling, but this isn't really a fair reflection of his season I'm sure. And with him more than likely returning home to play for his country soon, I'm willing to bet this was just a random off day and that he'll be back to his best in no time.

It was however quite funny to see the treatment he received from the Clermont forwards, who clearly weren't happy with the amount of bleach that entered the driving maul.

Disclaimer: Under no circumstances does Rugbydump condone the pulling of back line players' hair on the rugby field. While it's funny to see and not experience, if you do it on the field you will be penalised, and possibly punched in the ribs. So be responsible and play by the rules at all times.

  • he deserved that hair pulling. totally in the side. should have been binned (for the offence and the comic value aswell)

  • heard he's doing quite well overall!! steady boot as ever, that's why Perpignan won't release him for the Wales tests and Trinations!!

  • Percy is a legend, superb player, my gf likes him too lol

  • Hey RD, Just clicked on th Pery link after watching this clip and all of them are about bad moments in his career. For a man that has had such an illustrious career, it's disappointing to see that a true legend of the game has no fitting tribute to his contribution to the sport. Please find some of his better moments just so newby fans don't click on the link and be led to believe he's useless
    Cheers
P.S. good clip all the same

  • Percy is begin to look like a porn star or Peter Stringfellow - dodgy... does he pluck his eyebrows?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 6:08 pm

  • Fair point Anonymous. It's pure coincidence though, and I assure you we mean no disrespect to the man by it. :)

In future, why not use a nickname rather than Anonymous please? It makes it easier for everyone to be identified. Cheers

  • In Reply To Anonymous' Comment That Was Sent May 20 2008 6:08 PM:

I Wonder Myself If He Plucks His Eyebrows Too?

Plus, That 'Hand Off' Is Definitely A Yellow Card. And Can't Believe Montgomery Knocked On The Ball Allowing The Opposition Centre(No. 12) To Score.

  • Talk about having a Napoleoni Complex..

let's hope he's not back to making "Percy" into a verb, as well as a noun

  • haha! the greatest disclaimer I have ever seen!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 7:03 pm

  • Enjoyed that little clip :D

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 7:19 pm

  • That's why they call it a Percy,
cheyanqui you're too late I'm afraid, the commentators down south christened this type of thing a Percy a long time ago.
That Nalega is some powerhouse of a winger

  • Nice percy by Percy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 8:16 pm

  • he absolutely hates his hair being touch...ponce!

By Blogger willcritch, at May 20, 2008 8:37 pm

  • woah! OVER-REACTION by percy when the guy touched his DO. the shittiest last line of defence ever....giving cederick heymans a run for his money. but hey hes a good kicker!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 9:33 pm

  • i disagree, he's a class player, only problem is his catching :P, on the RWC top point scorer, and good in defence as well!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 9:46 pm

  • World Cup winning fullback. I don't think the Boks would have kept any passengers - ie: he's more than good enough on defence. Sure, he does some weird things sometimes, but overall he is top quality.

Funny clip though.. He'll always be teased about his hair, particularly in SA. :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 10:00 pm

  • man he alwasy messes up under the high ball

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 20, 2008 11:16 pm

  • hackneygriffin,
Yeah, I meant exactly that --

He risked bringing "The Percy" back into the rugby lexicon. :)

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at May 20, 2008 11:23 pm

  • to be fair to Percival,

This guy has played TONS of quality rugby, and has played them at a position (15 mostly) where the camera and eyes are on you.

To draw a baseball parallel, Reggie Jackson is the all-time strikeout leader amongst batsmen.

Both players only had these many opportunities to "mess up" because they were that good.

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at May 20, 2008 11:29 pm

  • And while we're on the subject of nicknames...

if this is a "Percy", then what is a "Dunning"?

    1) dropping a bind and getting crushed in a scrumdown

    2) kicking a drop goal when you need tries

    3) bulging out of your scrumcap, like a cartoon character who is being inflated with a tire pump

    4) having the only 1v1 battle you won all weekend be with a 140 lb Xhosa guy on the street after the game

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at May 20, 2008 11:31 pm

  • dunnings dropgoal was f'cking awesome :P

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 21, 2008 12:34 am

  • Oh Monty you had such a monty day. and on top of that you got your bleached locks pulled. Don't those frenchies know about civil rugby play!

By Blogger Big Ginger, at May 21, 2008 2:24 am

  • Why is the hand off "a yellow card?" It wasn't a punch or a blow, it was a push and certainly a fair if hard play in that situation.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 21, 2008 4:06 am

  • bad day @ the office I guess...

By Blogger Don, at May 21, 2008 3:49 pm

  • Percy had a bad day that's for sure (just like Heymans not too long ago actually).
You can't always be on top of everything and I've been watching Percy every week-end and it seems that a bit like Michalak, he's done some good things but he doesn't seem that well integrated among the group (then again Perpignan might not be the easiest team to join in the french league).
Privat is the one who pulled his hair... We've always had poetic 2nd rows in France...

By Blogger jay, at May 21, 2008 4:37 pm

  • Well, to be honest i dont blame Percy for the punch, didnt look all that good but in all honesty why not smack someone for doing it?! i would and have done!

Yes he may have come in from the side, wasnt that bad though, but there are plenty ways to counter it grab him by the collar and drag him out, hair pulling is a bit gay though!

Looks like a bad day, and when you are a world class player i think one or two bad days!

    Great video nonetheless!!!

    Thanks again RD

  • next time he won't be offside if he doesn't want his hair to be pulled

By Blogger Threma, at May 23, 2008 4:45 pm

  • Percy is such a nancy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 23, 2008 10:29 pm

  • Such an average player, this really made my day. Such a girl, typical saffa.
