Japan vs Canada - Nailbiting finish

As mentioned in the previous post, the match between Japan and Canada ended with a thrilling last minute try, leaving Japan 2 points behind the Canadians, with the conversion to come.

Shotaro Onishi was the man entrusted with the hugely important kick that would see his team drawing the match. Onishi stepped up to it, and with the Canadians charging at him, kept his head, followed through, and made history.

Surely one of the biggest nights in Japanese rugby, and the global audience will agree, one of the better finishes to a game we've seen this year.

Quality, I absolutely love the spirit of the 'minnows'. Did you hear that in all likelyhood the next world cup will be cut to 16? Mostly because New Zealand doesn't have the infrastructue (stadiums and hotels) to deal with it. Whereas as Japan would easily.

i heard they were thinking of placing the 2011 world cup in japan, it would have been a great opportunity to increase rugby awareness in asia, but instead it went to nz.

"Come on Japan" ?? Anyone else find the bias of the commentators to be appalling throughout the match? Sure, Canada played very poorly but I'm not sure that justifies them as being "desperately bad", "appalling players", or "the worst rugby players I've ever seen at this level" as described by the Irish commentators of Setanta. Not when their were no such comments about the Japanese team (except for their #10).

To be honest guys, giving the RWC to Japan wouldn't have done much for the game there. Face it, the Japanese - the hosts - would have been out after the pool stages and after probably more big score thumpings from the SANZAR nations and others. That leaves the Japanese to watch weeks more rugby with little or no emotional investment in who wins. Few people would turn up.

I'd love to see the game take off there, and I'd like to see the 'minnow' countries given more support from the IRB. But I'm not sure the current cup format is the way to go - I'd like to see a two tier system with a significant reward to teams that do well.

I'd just love to see the IRB give a fuck about anyone other than the money-spinning countries.

In regards to your nz infrastructure comment, the blame lies with Auckland and its attitude that the rest of nz dose not exist, if you’ve meet enough of them you know what I mean. It would be a disaster to loose Japan as with all the minnow teams. Some of the best highlights come from those games. If the rwc is cut to 16 don’t blame NZ as a whole, blame the Auckland suites they screwed it up in 03 and I bet they screw it up again.

in ragards to he "Should never have allowed the play to continue" it is up to the referee to decide how long he left the clock running due to injuries in which he didnt stop the clock! so tbh, you have no grounds to make that call, so STFU!

I would expect more of Morgan Williams. He led the Canucks from the front all tournament. A shame that he had such a mental lapse. It looked like he could have easily made a catch for it. Let the guy carry you into touch...
But apart from that, I'd still back him on my team.

And credit to Japan to keep it going.

All respect out to Japan of course, Canada played like shit in the end. But the game should have long been over, the ref allowed to go on when it should have been whistled done after the 80th minute. It doesn't matter if Japan is in possession, the games over, time's up. And for Morgan Williams, I have no problems with what he did, that they actually caught that, or called it was a surprise. Just disappointing in the end...

Are you nuts? In rugby the game only stops when the ball goes out of play. There's no injury time and the does not blow the whistle the second it goes 80 minutes, only when the ball is killed or goes out of play.
Learn the rules.
