Six Nations Pick of the Week Round 1

The first round of the RBS Six Nations 2008 was highly anticipated, but in some ways a bit disappointing for many. For whatever reason, the sides looked rusty and unadventurous.

We had some competitive rugby though and one major upset.

Having said all that, we did get to see some great tries in some of the matches, which we've highlighted here.

The Pick of the Week features the best tries which were scored by Girvan Dempsey, Toby Flood, Lee Byrne, Mike Phillips, and Vincent Clerc.

  • france is looking pretty solid... gooooooooooo wales!

  • I think from an English point of view we'd like anyone but France to win. Obviously we could still win ourselves but we'll have to play well for 80 consecutive minutes first. Personally I'd like to see Wales or Ireland win it if England don't.

Wales vs France will be a cracker again I reckon. Mind you, I doubt the French full back will take the aeons that Balshaw did to clear the ball.

  • The pass from 14 to 15 in the first French try looks forward no?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 10:06 am

  • Sorry to say that that is a forward pass...apart from that it's a nice try.
    Refs should be more careful.
Question: can the TMO not give a try based on a froward pass during the play in which the try occured?...

    Go Travagli!!!!!Go Italy!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 10:20 am

  • No the TMO cannot make any decisions on forward passing. Yes the french try did have a forward pass, but it was still the best try of the first round. Clerc and Heymans are in terrific form, they're a threat to anyone.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 11:07 am

  • The TMO can only do what is asked of him.

In the case of the french try. The ref asked was there any foul play after the ball had grounded. The try was always given.
The TMO would not be able to give information on anything else.

IF the ref had asked, is the grounding of the ball good. The TMO would obiovuly say yes, but still would not be able to comment about the pass.

If the ref asked, I have suspicions about the pass, please inform me if I can award this try or not then the TMO would be able to tell him.

Its all about what speifically the referee asks.

  • The french pass is foward for me. But this try is a demonstration of good intentions.

Rugbydump forgot the second french try of Julien Malzieu... It's a funny try! Please could you find it?

    GOOOOOOOO FRAAAAAAAANCE

  • The Irish game was scrappy and France need some time to really hit top gear.... Having said that i think the standard will improve as the tournament goes on. Still no bowe for Ireland. Anyone have an opinion on this ?

  • as an england fan i have to say volcano's set up for flood was good but then england thought they would switch off. And to make it worse volcano never got the ball after.
hope england win if not irland or wales. (i cant spell volcano's name)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 6:04 pm

  • Or Ireland for that matter...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 7:08 pm

  • Volcano=vainocolo right?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 7:59 pm

  • As a french fan, I'd say France deserves to win this 2008 tournament again cause it's the only team who wish to make exciting game.If France doesn't win, i'd like england to (cause they're bloody bastards but others are even more)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 9:02 pm

  • I think the TMO only cares about what happens in the try area. So, a forward pass in the main field cannot be investigate by the TMO...

On my opinion, France or teh Ospreys should win the tournament as they are the only teams trying to create some exiting rugby (even if its not perfect!).

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 05, 2008 10:50 pm

  • haha france with a forward pass again? signs of new zealand game showing through haha, refs must be more catious of them

personally my favorite is the ireland try, great skill in the kick, lucky little bounces and great pace, fun to watch

in my opinion, if ireland settles on one good starting XV (which i hope they find this upcoming game) they will be a force, to many switches latley that havent paid off, but these seem good

ps: to players on diffrent teams on diffrent tires miss kicking ahead grubbers, thought these european lads loved their football? haha oh well, both seemed to work out better in the end

  • BOOOOOOOOOOO french forward pass, double movement, blocking etcetcetc!

wouldnt have changed the win for france outcome but might make a difference later! so booooooooooooooooooooooooo!

(unhappy scots fan here incase you hadnt noticed!)

    cracking weekend of close rugby.

    very impressed with wales comeback.

ireland looking rather shakey....but secured the win.

now the first game nerves are over it would be nice to see scotland actually getting some lineouts......or lifting the jumpers....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 3:13 am

  • GOOOOOOO IRELAND!!!!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 7:00 am

  • can sum1 explain y that isnt double movement from clerc????luked lyk de luca had him wen he went over........tnx conor

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 8:46 am

  • When you're tackled you can place the ball down wherever you want, so by stretching his arm and placing it on the line it isn't a double movement.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 4:42 pm

  • emm tnx geraint.....
stil luks 2 me lyk he sneaks a few yards b4 de line though..up 2 the ref i supose...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 7:30 pm

  • ye brad im irish jst hav sumting agenst clerc after wat he did 2 us in croker hahaha joking hes quality

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 7:09 pm

  • the first clerc try killed all the others...although one of the passes was a bit suspect. the rest of the tries were very average, what's with all the kicking? i could bemoan the current state of world rugby, but i'd be here all day... bring in the new rules that will be used in super 14 this year!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 08, 2008 12:46 am

  • France.. the only team attempting to be exciting!! Not quite true, wales aren't looking too shabby!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2008 9:15 pm

  • the french pass was forward, they were blocking, they used double movement to score. apart from that it was ok i guess

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 18, 2008 9:43 pm

  • I'm French and I play rugby in Toulouse...
I find it funny talking that much about the eventual foward pass but hey!.. We would've hammered them anyway!
At least, the French squad produces some game in opposition to the English, the equivalent of the Italians in football. Hope we kick you british ass on saturday. Would be a nice present for my birthday!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 10, 2008 9:10 pm

  • the french forward pass is pretty blatant...and i don't see how it can still be seen as a good try if it was in fact an illegal one

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 17, 2009 6:48 pm

  • some nice tries. But the first one from the french was forward.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 19, 2009 8:51 pm

  • Can't wait until 6N this year!!! I have no idea going into this who's gonna win...

Ireland's got some young talent eager to prove themselves, Wales has been looking good all this past year, and Scotland will be looking to turn around last year's disappointment and may very well do it.

As for Italy, England, and France, I'm not sure since I haven't been able to follow them as much. I'm sure France will be exciting as always, and hopefully England has learned something from their lackluster autumn internationals performances. But a lot of the time, I'll root for Italy anyways, as they're the underdogs in this competition.

Anyways, I can't wait for this weekend and the first 3 matches!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 03, 2009 10:17 am

  • 1st - Wales
    2nd - Scotland
    3rd - Ireland
    4th - France
    5th - England
    6th - Italy
Thats how i feel this years 6Ns is going.
