Friday Funnies - National Anthem goes up in smoke

It's been a week since the horror that took place prior to kick-off in South Africa's 20-13 loss to France in Toulouse. While the dust has settled somewhat, this joke of a performance is worthy of a place in our archives.

Disgracing ones country is no laughing matter, but you can't help but find Reggae singer Ras Dumisani's rendition of the South African national anthem pretty humourous.

There's plenty to choose from. Was it the out of place bongo drums, the high pitch as he got into 'Die Stem', or simply the look of utter dismay on the players faces afterwards?

On a serious note though, the wailing from Reggae Ras angered the Springboks, who then had to witness a rousing performance of the French anthem, La Marseillaise.

"Every time you go out on the field and sing the national anthem, it's very important for us and that's something that really fires you up because you know you're playing for your country," said a visibly upset Victor Matfield.

"It was a joke out there. The guys couldn't sing along to it and even the crowd were starting to laugh. It was very disappointing."

Many have speculated as to who appointed the singer. The South African embassy in France was originally blamed, but they've since distanced themselves from it saying that they had only provided the French Rugby Federation with Dumisani's agent's name, as it was the only name it had of a South African singer living in France.

SA Rugby Union President Oregan Hoskins has since revealed that he received an official apology from his counterpart in France. He said that he's accepted that French rugby officials did not deliberately try to "sabotage the anthem and, as much as the performance still rankles, we regard the matter as now closed".

Dumisani has been interviewed since, and even performed the anthem again on various radio stations. He was just as bad.

"No one told me they were upset with the singing," he said. "In fact, someone just came up to me and told me how beautifully I had sung. Everyone at the stadium told me I sang well, even after the match.

"The Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika has been my tune since I was a baby. How can I not know the words? I am the biggest reggae man in South Africa and the Springboks are my team."

Lets hope that's the last time we see Dumisani, or any other poor singer, making a mockery of an anthem before a big match. One would have thought there's an official screening process by now. I think it's safe to say that after this fiasco, there will be.

  • "Franch players (rugby and soccer) must have the cheat-gene coded in their DNA. Fair play?..."Pas merci!"

You can say all what you want about football french players (even football in general) and their shaming cheat, but dont associate this with french rugby, because there is no link between. the "anthem affair" is close : the ffr is no more implicated than the saru, and i dont even talk about the players who have of course nothing to see with that.

  • That singer looks like the Predator! This is bloody hilarious reminds me of Borat singing his national anthem...awkward.

To be fair though I think the brass band ruined it. I mean reggae and brass c'mon. He might sound better with some bass and keyboard reggae music.

Just to name few french cheaters in both fields (rugby soccer)who came to the public attention this week:

    - Damien Traille
    - Henry

    lol

  • To be fair, this guy was the best South African performer on the pitch that night!
    Ha! You gotta laugh!

    By Anonymous BOKFAN4LIFE, at November 21, 2009 2:49 am

  • I say we hire him for when the French visit our shores!! And yip he shouts RASTA at the end, what a disgrace!!
But as South Africans we have to have a sense of humour!! I bet our government would have wanted him to play flyhalf for the boks to full the quotas!! Ha!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 2:52 am

  • Thanks RD as I never saw this, now I can see why the bok fans weren't too happy - that was awful!! I do feel sorry for them, and schaulks face is priceless!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 3:00 am

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 3:07 am

  • Her raped my anthem!! I say there should be a price on his head for when he comes back to SA, we should kidnap him and force him to listen to his own music 24/7!! Ha, but you gotta laugh ( even as a bok fan) Would also love to know what Smitty says at the end & Schaulk looked like he was ready to kill and Kanko looking over his shouler at the end & habana not being able to hold it in, the little shake of the head!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!
GO THE BOKS FOR THIS WEEKEND, SORT THIS NIGHTMARE TOUR OUT!!!

  • to anonymous :

Yes, Henry is a cheater and a shame for french football, and i dont matter.
You can consider that Traille cheated last saturday (what a consequence!) but in this case how many players are cheaters too? nearly all.

By Anonymous 3/4 centre, at November 21, 2009 10:34 am

  • to all the anons: It's Schalk Burger, not "Shaulk"...i had to think of "Shrek", when I read "Shaulk"...btw lousy singer ;)

    By Anonymous R.S., at November 21, 2009 10:38 am

  • remember a few years back ireland played in france and they had a choir instead of a band.it was pretty shit too. not the first time the french brutalised an anthem.

By Anonymous jt, at November 21, 2009 11:46 am

  • Welsh and scottish anthems are the best. All the others are crap.

By Anonymous Andy, at November 21, 2009 12:21 pm

  • Silly question R.S., but how do you pronounce Burger's name?

I've listened to the commentators many times, but it's always really ambiguous. Is it Sh-Caulk or Sh-aulk?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 12:24 pm

  • to the above....his name does get changed often with the commentators.....

    i think its pronounced skalk......so like sc-halk

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 12:48 pm

  • Andy, have you ever heard the words to the French National Anthem? If you don't feel like tearing some guy in two after it, then you've obviously heard it wrong!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 1:10 pm

  • It was pretty funny. Just wish it wasn´t the Boks that it happened to. But then again, I suppose we are the best possible target for jokes like this.

    Rasta!

    Classic.

By Anonymous Robert, at November 21, 2009 2:21 pm

  • The best way to pronounce it would be like the world Skull, with a K on the end. Skullk. Or, Skalk.

The look on his face is priceless. Many of their faces actually. Funny how some tried to ignore it though. Bismark etc. Look at Matfield at the beginning though (ready for war!), then his face near the end. :(

Funny looking back at it now, but must have been horrible for the players.

By Anonymous FrankyH, at November 21, 2009 2:22 pm

  • lol well at least you guys have a nice anthem to butcher. my anthem probably needs butchering to sound any better...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 3:16 pm

  • The bok and Irish anthems are tons ahead of the Rest, maybe thats why the french wanted to butcher the boks and irish anthems???Hmmmm -something to definately think about!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 4:51 pm

  • No no no no, this is one of my fav anthems (and im not even a bok fan) cannot believe this was allowed to happen, surprised the boks didn't leave the field after that, the anthem is so important and it is the start of the game, no matter what anyone says - it can really fire up the players (I think the french did this on purpose & should be fined!!!!)...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 4:54 pm

  • concerning the French being cheaters:

    - about soccer: the whole country finds winning this way was a disgrace and nobody is proud of that (except Domenech but everybody hates him), but you have to admit that using your hand during a soccer match isn't more disgraceful than diving to obtain a penalty kick, and no such fuss is made in this case (ask Trapatoni, the Italian Irish coach).

    - about rugby: it was a test match and pride only is at stake. Tell me: what did Traille win by pulling Hab's leg into Clerc's face? Yep, you said it, being considered as a complete moron by pretty much everybody who watched the replay. I'm not sure he felt proud when the team watched the game again with the staff.

Henry and Traille's punishment? Being suspected of a global French-cheating scheme including this appalling singer is a punishment. That'll teach'em.

by Maximus (yeah, i know, looong post)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 5:10 pm

  • A rather easy win over the Italians. Once Beast came on and Smit moved to hooker, we dominated their scrum as well. Italian 8th man played well.

One more thing; I'd hate to be an English rugby fan right now!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 5:14 pm

  • About the "anthem-butchering" theory: come on guys, have you ever heard us sing our national anthem? We're a disgrace. Our anthem is good for matches (it's a warrior anthem) but the crowd JUST CAN'T sing. I've tried many times myself with friends, we can't help this. We definitely listen to you in admiration for being able to do this as a crowd. So, i can tell you, this is honestly a theory you can forget. Unfortunately.

    by Maximus

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 21, 2009 5:17 pm

  • To the above anon, don't gloat. It is expected that the boks win matches against Italy, to be honest we should have put more on them and yip we won but we still looked tiered at times. I'm not impressed with the boks on this end of year tour. We should have done more!!!
But definately agree with you that the Scrum improved ALOT with smitty at 2 again!!

By Anonymous BringFSteynback, at November 21, 2009 5:40 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 22, 2009 1:46 am

  • The french had a chidren's choir for today's game V Samoa. Any chance of that RD?

By Anonymous Stephem, at November 22, 2009 4:28 am

  • Shocking!!

By Anonymous Jot, at November 22, 2009 2:29 pm

  • To be fair the French singer didn't do justice to the French anthem either.

The French and Scottish anthems are the best. Also, when Portugal played NZ in the WC, the way the Portuguese players sang it screaming it at the top of their lungs, especially the SH I think, is one of my favourite moments in Rugby. Also the fact they celebrated their deserved try like they had just taken on the world. Brilliant.

I do understand why the boks are angry even if it should not become a political incident...Our dear president would be too happy to be able to speak about something else than his wife

R.I.P LUCKY DUBE...even though i'm not from S.A even my face was getting screwed up listening to that guy...couldnt help but laugh when he couldnt hit the higher notes "RASTA MON" lol!
