John Smit tosses a player's boot and gets penalised

And now for something completely different.

We've all done it before - seen a players boot on the floor, or pulled one off in the tackle, and been tempted to toss it away like you would with that old FHM you've had since you were twelve.

John Smit found out this weekend in France that some refs evidently don't view tossing a players boot lightly though. Maybe it's dangerous play. Maybe it's theft. Who knows, but it was rather comical to say the least, and got Clermont's opposition, Catres, a penalty from Smit's blatant disregard for the laws of the game.

Good to see Smitty's still making headlines in Europe after his World Cup achievements. But I think next time the boot will be aimed towards the whistle blower instead.

  • lol ! you don't see penalties like this everyday ...

well, it's a penalty because it was anti sportmanship ... depends on the referee"s interpretation ...

  • Wow...I think he just didn't want anyone to land on it. I guess it all depends on the Ref.
I personally think it was a bad penalty, but what can we do.

  • Well, thats happend to me once. A guy took my boot and hurled it away. Although, playing rugby in Sweden, there are wood next to the park, and the boot was not to be found anywhere. And since I didn´t have any extra boots, I had to play on for 15 minutes without one boot. That was painful in the rucks...

  • LOL at the latest Anon comment about his boot getting flipped away and having to play without it. Classic!

  • Well I think he was thinking that it would be more dangerous for the ruck or maul to fall on it - but hey guess the ref was having a "moment"...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 13, 2008 1:54 pm

  • well it could be considered unsportsmanlike conduct so a penalty can be whistled against him..

  • hahaha there are wood next to park. I do be speaking english. Funny comment from Sweden man.

  • That Law is one of the great Laws of rugby...
that a referee can always whistle someone for being a prick.

Now if only rugby players could whistle the referees for being pricks..

There are a few I would imagine having rap sheets that would make Bakkies Botha blush.

  • very funny - i watched that game and the ref was awful - it was not his day - he had many questionable calls on both sides

By Blogger Unknown, at May 14, 2008 10:56 am

  • Well its the same as holdin a player back in open play because its preventing them from continuing
