World Record drop goal attempt by Jaco
In the 49-0 thrashing of the Springboks by the Wallabies in the 2006 Tri-Nations, flyhalf Jaco van der Westhuizen of the 'Boks had a shocker of a game.This was one of many screw-ups from that match that got him dropped by Jake White.
Back home in South Africa he got absolutely ripped to shreds by the public, especially for that squeaky voice of his when shouting at the Ref that it was a dropkick. A moment he'd rather forget no doubt.
Jaco is back in action in the Super 14 however with the Bulls, who're currently competing for a spot in the semis. He's having a good season too, mainly coming on from the bench as an impact player, and sporting a rather impressive beard.

Doesnt mean it was a drop goal attempt, just a drop kick like a grubber kick or sumfin like that. his body position shows hes going for that kind of move anyway.

you can see he fumbled it and then tried to rectify things by kicking it. If that is a springbok drop kick, then no wonder they lost.

he was awesome- after the 2003 WC he spent half a season at Leicester, and he was an awesome fly half/ full back.

Ha! How pathetic and how embarassing for him!! Anyone who believes that was an attempt at a grubber or a drop kick is either blind or a complete numbnut. This is suppose to be a gentleman's game not a liar/cheater's game... is there a word for gentleman in Afrikaans?

looks like he went for a dropkick and one of his hands slipped.. His body angle says it too.. toobad it was a fumble. Im not gonna go dogging him tho, like all those guys below me, he still plays better than me!

he just had a shocker like new zealand against france in the world cup and australia against england in the world cup. if dan carter did the same thing do you think these hyenas would be chewing on his bones? they'd be saying, 'he made a few mistakes but he is still the best guy for the job.' jaco was part of the team that won the tri nations in 2004 and he was part of the bulls team who won the super 14 2007, he was part of a leicester tigers team who was very successful because of his influence and expansive style of rugby. he is a match winner but only human just like the rest of you who can hardly string a sentence together on this blog.

Hear hear. Looks like he got the ball, went for perhaps a chip over but lost control as he got it and went for the boot anyway, doesnt look like a dropgoal attempt to me.

Yes you could "just kick every ball you drop even by accident", and it would be perfectly legal. It's a drop kick regardless of where someone aims the kick.

Does someone mind finding the law that states why this should or should not be a penalty?
Is it because he lost control of it, as the ref says? Or even if he lost control of it, since he kicks it immediately, as someone mentioned below, regardless of the fact he lost control, should it be considered a drop-kick "attempt"...though he clearly was in no position nor was he aiming for a drop goal. But does that matter, is what I'm asking.
I'm a little too tired to go searching for the law, but if no one else does can post it, I'll see what I can find another time.
On a side note, it was clearly an attempt to cover up a botched attempt to kick a grubber or a punt down field...and in that respect, it's pretty funny. But, I think we've all been in a similar situation at least once before where we realize we're messing up a play, and immediately after look for some sort of excuse that will make it seem like we're not just some jackass who dropped the ball. Maybe that's why it's so funny.

Obviously it wasn't a dropgoal, and obviously Jaco was just being a moron, trying to fool the ref, when he's the only one that looked like a fool in the end.
It's a tongue in cheek clip and title. Sense of humour failure guys?
And secondly, it is NOT a drop on if you drop it and kick it. They changed that law mid nineties from what I recall. In the past you COULD drop it, then lunge out to kick it, and claim it was a drop.. not anymore. If it's dropped, as judged by the ref, it's a knock-on.

There's nothing wrong with being in Japan, it seems some people are missing the point. A south African Rugby player going to Japan to play rugby is like an NBA player coming to Europe. There's good b.ball in Europe but it would still be considered a career failure. (Japan aren't even in the Top 10 world rankings, even if some of their off-spring can manage to make it on to the Eng U-18's...hmmm, name?)
Regarding the law of the game, you have to have control of the ball when you drop it for a kick, he clearly spilled the ball, and as someone pointed out, it didn't go hand to ground it went more like hand to hip to thigh to ground then foot...silly to argue with really.

The referee is always right, but technically in the rules it is the last point of contact with the ball before the ball hits the ground which was his foot. Also his body position clearly shows he is going for a kick. And no England player has come from Japan to the U18's. I watch them and there was no Eurasian player.
