Wales robbed by the ref

Italy beat Wales 23-20 in this years Six Nations at the Stadio Flaminio. A great victory for the Italians, but overshadowed by a terrible refereeing decision at the end.

Wales were awarded a penalty, having checked with White that there was time for them to kick for touch and go for a match-winning try, they turned down the chance to go for the three points that might have earned them a draw.

When Wales did kick for touch White immediately blew for full-time leaving the Wales players angry and frustrated.

White was at least man enough to issue an apology for the confusion though. The Italian halfback Alessandro Troncon had no sympathy for the Wales players, blaming them for taking too long deciding what to do. He said: "Wales had 10 seconds left to play but the referee was correct because the Welsh players were talking about what to do and they took their time. Fortunately for us the official correctly decided to blow the final whistle."

  • wales would not have won the game they would have drawn.....and if you saw moments earlier you would have seen that it was crossing between 2 welsh players so it should have been a free kick to Italy....wales played poor through out the match and didnt deserve anything...it would have been Italy that would have been robbed

  • wat r u on bwt the penalty wud av bin a draw if they scored a try they wud av won it is still unfair wat the ref did even if it is wales

  • Did anyone notice how Jonathon Davies suddenly stops saying anything after the whistle had gone? I think his head must have exploded!

  • The thing about it was the ref was told in his head set to finish the match up you can hear him go "The time is up?" and then something is said and ten he blows it

  • Nar ref was infact correct, the penalty after time is only played IF the team makes a reasonable attempt to set up quickly.. However wales did not they lingered in a huddle and thus the whistle was blown.
Even if they had taken the lineout it was no dead cert that they would drive the big italian pack(who were superior throughout the match) over the line to score and so it is just an unfortunate incident for anger of losing to italy to be vented at.

  • What are you talking about? He gave us 10 seconds to play and as soon as he told us that, Hook kicked it to touch, he didnt take his time. It doesnt matter how long the players then take to throw the ball in in the lineout because you cant blow up when the ball is out of play before time is up. Yes wales played terrible and italy probably did deserve to win, thats not the point though anyway, there was an awful lot of things the ref and linesmen missed through out that game as well, not just this. Whats done is done though, well done italy.

  • there was no certainty that wales were going to score in the last 10 secs anyway.. and i think italy played alot better then wales in the whole match and deserved the win!

  • the welsh have a right to be upset. The ref clearly stated that there was enough time to have a lineout but then somebody from upstairs told him 2 end the game. Its not like hook took his time, as soon as the ref said 10 seconds he kicked it into touch meaning they have to play the lineout becase the game cant finish if the ball went out before time is up. Bullshit refereeing

  • it wasnt the refs fault- the tmo [television match official] who does the time keeping had two clocks 5 seconds apart, when he said ten secs left he then saw the other clock and switched to that meaning there was only 5 seconds left- not enough. the tmo should have stayed with the first clock, unfortunately he did not, resulting in the confusion at the end

  • How can you say for sure that they would have scored? Their lineout was rubbish all night and Italy have a much stronger pack than Wales. It was wrong what happened but the welsh reaction has lost them a lot of support over this so its in the past and forget about it

  • That was a bad disision from the ref. However if they had of been allowed to play on they may not have got the try. This ref was one of my favourites, up and till now.

  • "The Welsh reactions has lost them support?"

Well i can't see any other team would have reacted differently. I'm welsh and even though i felt we didn't deserve to win the game it was a disgrace the way the game ended, and it took the gloss off the italian win as well which was a shame. If it had happened to the italians against us i would have felt bad for them, it was the tmo's fault but the ref told the players they had time left so he should have just carried on.

  • L'Italia è stata sempre bastonata dagli arbitri (ex. Ireland in august).
Per una volta ci è andata bene, finitela di lamentarvi

  • The Italians have no sense of honour :l

  • haha i love chris white! brilliant decision!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 29, 2008 9:55 pm

  • At the end of the day you can hardly blame the ref it was wales who decided to take the risk and go for the game. If there was so little time left what was wrong with going for a scrum or tap-kick??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 02, 2008 2:42 am

  • yeah... wales was really robbed.. poxy italian ref! :P

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 11, 2008 8:45 pm

  • jajaja!! suck your own ass fucking welsh!!
well that enonomous persons got balls havent they

and the i love chris white
well then go n marry him or sumat
    i dont need to know

    italy played better
wales were robbed of the possibility to win or draw the game by poor refing

as all rugby players know the refs decision is final.the ref can not go fliping about the amount of time
and the ball is not in play so the clock is normaly stoped for that amount of time.
generally poorly delt with by all parties

    do u agree?
    sorry for the essay
    well done italy

    names jai

  • We don't know if Wales could of scored a try from that play that might of lost anyway but that was fucking harsh for the ref to do that, what a cock.
