Ronan O'Gara pummeled by Duncan Macrae - Lions Tour 2001

During the British & Irish Lions tour match against New South Wales in Australia, Tempers frayed and Duncan McRae was deservedly sent off for repeatedly punching O'Gara in the face.

Subsequent fights broke out across the pitch and four yellow cards followed - two for each side - as the referee tried to get a grip on the game.

When the restart finally came, only 25 players were involved and the Lions got their first points of the half from a penalty kick by the unerringly accurate Wilkinson.

Final Score: NSW 24-41 Lions

  • wat a coward punchin on the floor, he'd have been in trouble if woody had turned around.

  • Is there any truth in the rumour that Ronan had 'entertained' Mcrae's young lady a few nights earlier?

Might go some way to explaining things....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2007 4:51 pm

  • an absolute disgrace..frankly disgusting behaviour. i dont how he was cited afterwards, but it should have been bloody strong. and mccrae even tries to justify it, acting puzzled at the descision. as the commentator bad as it gets. it was not as if o'gara squared up to him and he got a hard punch for his troubles. he was on the floor and its was repeated and prolonged. no action on the pitch deserves that.

  • i`ve been looking for that clip for years!lol for mcrae innocent face and scratching his ear like saying oh it wasnt so bad

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2007 5:30 pm

  • i believe o gara and mcraes' missus had abit of one on one time before that match and mrcraes' smug face as he walked off showed that he wasnt too upset about the red! lookin back tho rog came off better as mcrae had to turn down a move to saracens when a number of lions players expressed joy at their chance to meet him in the guiness premiership!

  • what a scumbag

  • There's always going to be scuffles on a rugby pitch with tensions running high, but that was absolutely disgusting.

Nothing short of a thuggish assault and Macrae should have served a maximum ban. It gets worse every time you watch it. Credit to O'Gara though he takes it like a man and walks off.

I sincerely doubt Ronan 'entertained McRae's young lady.' Sounds like just another rumour similar to the Doug Howlett being gay one. People just say them so they sound like they are in the know!

  • im an Aussie myself, and that was disgraceful, even if those rumors that are flying around are true, theres no need for that kind of stuff.
if the rumor was true the best way to get even is a hard, clean tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 11:24 am

  • McRae only got a 7 week ban for using ROG as a punch bag. poor old Trevor Brennan has received a 5 year ban from all rugby for punhcing a fan. by my reckoning McRae should have gotten at least 10 years for this. Any opinions out there. Posted by Welldonelads.

  • I thought it was hilarious when Macrae had to play against Munster in Thomond park. (Can't remember who he was playing for...)

Once the ref blew the whistle for full time Macrae just ran as fast as he could into the dressing rooms.

I think he got a ban for a few weeks but it was during the off season so it didn't affect him at all

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 2:08 pm

  • fukin beautiful, gara deserved it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 2:20 pm

  • poor cunt should have squeezed his testicles.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 2:22 pm

  • How did o'gara deserve that?! I think he should have had the maximum ban - 7 weeks is naff all. Grewcock, although having a colourful disciplinary record, is serving almost that for one punch.

Brennan should have the life ban reinstated, it's unbelievable that he managed to appeal. what does he care anyway, he's retired. Fans should never be asaulted.

  • McRae should never have been allowed to play professional rugby again after that cowardly attack.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 7:11 pm

  • ogara deserved it, the mouthy fucker.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2007 10:31 pm

  • how did he deserve that?no1 deserves that cept maybe McRae himself

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 13, 2007 12:18 am

  • lay off ROG he has dealt with rumors that the media have circulated about affairs as dealt with in rugby world. He's took them on the chin and when england came to croker made wilkinson look like the media manufactured prat he really is. As for gobby thats what makes a good fly half as he the first receiver in the backs and will set moves. there is no way he deserved that, no one does on the pitch.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 14, 2007 12:56 pm

  • wtf how did o'gara deserve that? one punch on the ground woul have been cowardly and lame, but to repeatedly punch him over and over and look like a dumb twat when he got the red card!!! WHAT A C**T!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 16, 2007 12:24 am

  • I've been looking for this clip ever since it happened on that tour.

I always wanted to see how McRae managed to get O'gara into that position, did he grapple him to the ground or something then start wailing on him?

He's in a complete frenzy as well, he's still swinging when his own players drag him off ROG. :(

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 17, 2007 8:27 pm

  • who cares!?!haha, dumb shits

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 26, 2007 11:11 pm

  • rugbys darkest hour! mcrea is a cheating scum and he even had the cheek to laff when he walked off! what is most desterbing is that his OWN TEAMMATE had to drag him off o'gara! duncan mcrea should be baned for life! brough a big smile to my face when he had to retire because of injury! prick!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 29, 2007 3:17 pm

  • Well done to his team-mate who first dragged him off ROG and then returned ROG to the Lions. Mcrae would have been in severe trouble if Keith Wood had turned his head though.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 06, 2007 5:56 pm

  • Am I the only one who thinks that ROG is a complete moron who constantly provokes and gets bitchy with the opposition and gets away with it.

Do it for long enough and someone will eventually catch up with you my darling! It's sad that I feel like this, as I generally like the Irish team...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 03, 2007 9:59 pm

  • when have you ever seen o'gara get bitchy in all his after match interviews he speaks well of the opposition come win or loss look at the france game in the 6nations and the two aftermatch interviews after losing the european cup twice. As for the choking incident pick up a decent rugby mag and you'll find o'gara said nothing it was eddie o'sullivan making an allegation after irish forwards made the claims, "being the puppet in the middle was no fun for o'gara"(rugby world.) as i said further up he's ahd alot to deal with in his personal life aswell the media once again fanning rumors of an affair. Its just because of such publicity that people get the idea he's loud and bitchy when really he isn,t

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 05, 2007 8:52 pm

  • You guys sound like bunch of girls. Rugby is a contact sport. In contact sports, sometimes things get sorted with fistcuffs. Sometimes somebody wins. It wasn't a cheap shot. The fact that McRae gets him where he wants him is good fighting. Lions players have been doing that for years. They got some of their own back. If we tripped him from behind or king hit him, that's one thing. This was a straight blue, and O'Gara copped it. If anything, shame on his team mates for not backing him up in what proved to be a mismatch.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 16, 2007 7:44 pm

  • McRae played at Gloucester for two seasons a couple of years ago - that is where he played Munster at Thomond. to be fair to the Munster fans after the initial booing it was ok really. I think the reason why he got off the pitch so quickly was because we got stuffed!!!

I am not condoning what he did, but before his last game for Glaws we asked him about that incident in Oz. Interestingly he put a different slant on things. he said that he wasn't proud of what he had done - however he didn't mind what happened on the rugby field except when someone starts messing with his eyes!!!

ROG is a fiesty player and I have seen on several occasions over the years incidents where he has given out as good as he has got - he is by no means a saint...Duncs however is a gentleman and it was a pleasure seeing him play for Glaws!!

Gloucester V Bourgoin in the Heineiken Cup 2004, he gave his MotM award away to a Glaws kid who had travelled over to France!

  • richard hill was also disgracefully taken out before the tests, in what was a cowardly series of attacks on the lions players to injure as amny as possible before the tests. bunch of aussie faggots

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 03, 2007 11:24 am

  • "aussie faggits"

shut the fuck up dick he probly said something offensing to him for him to lash out like that and honesly punching on the ground for revenge.....nice one!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 06, 2007 11:46 am

  • McRae is a tosser, the australians are tossers, why try and injure people so that they cant play in the test matches, scared gay boys. McRae is not a hard man just a cunt. the same as any cunt that stands up for him, its ridiculous

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 07, 2007 12:25 pm

  • Lions lost the series and the fights......pussies

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 08, 2007 11:43 am

  • More than 10 times... Rugby is a "contact sports", but it's not ultimate fighting !
Like him or not, O'Gara didn't deserve that. I agree with the idea that some were willing to see the Lions weakened. O'Driscoll was injured in a game vs NZ too.

Now, I know Ronan O'Gara, but I never heard of MacRae so far... so leave the poor lad lay in his mediocrity.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 08, 2007 5:40 pm

  • mcrae had to play in thomond park last year for gloucester and he had a howler, o' gara nailed him a sweet tackle aswel, best way for revenge, mccrae could learn a thing or two from rog!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2007 1:12 am

  • He'd of been dead if Woody turned around and saw him wailing on ROG.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 22, 2007 2:03 am

  • well done duncan, rog really deserves it he's an arrogant bitch.jaja i also enjoyed when argentina nailed the irish at the world cup, well don dr. phill

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 30, 2007 2:16 am

  • There's no need for that in a game of rugby no matter who the player is. Respect to the NSW winger for breaking it up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 17, 2007 2:10 am

  • yr all a bunch of pooftas, that was sick, shit sumtimes boils over in rugby and this is the result. stop crying about it and move on. the lions a the dirtiest team in the world. haha lost 2 wallabies, then 2 all balcks...wonder wats gonna happen in 2 years? hahahahaha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 29, 2007 7:11 am

  • You know its bad when your teammate is helping the other guy...Fuckin thug mcRae, shouldnt play rugby again.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 12, 2007 1:13 am

  • Hes the luckiest player in the world
    first-to not have been banned
    second-that keith didnt turn round

the austrailians ans new zealanders are such scumbags
at every lions tour they try and take out key players
    like right there
and back in 2005 they took out drico (the greatest ever rugby player) and they took out dallaglio

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 13, 2007 8:41 pm

  • the funniest thing of all is all the irish nobbers on here saying if woody saw it etc. woodys a fag just like the rest of the irish. erm, woody vs johnson? EXACTLY.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 27, 2008 9:59 pm

  • Shortly after that Lions tour McRae came to thomond park to play against munster in the Heineken cup, and lets say the reception he got coming onto to pitch was less then warm!

Although Seemingly RoG meet McRae's missus out with the lions the week before, what i heard is that he didnt get anywhere with her but made a few comments to Duncan throughout his time on the field. Still no excuse but you can see where he is coming from. Also heard from a friend of Duncans that lives in England that Duncan would never act like that and was totally out of character, so i dont think RoG was so innocent but as professionals both should have known better

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 10:52 am

  • Mcrae should have got a life ban, no doubt, what a puff, he cant get even fairly so has to wait until his oponent is down.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 11, 2008 7:38 pm

  • i don't condone it and i think it is a very cowardly act, however the lions cannot say that they aren't dirty. in the 1989 tour to australia, the australians constantly complained of their dirty play

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 12, 2008 2:17 pm

  • digusting

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 24, 2008 8:05 pm

  • in rugby u don't sort ur problems out with fighting.u take ur anger out by putting in a hard tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 5:37 pm

  • not only disgracfull behaviour, but there was no appoligy or sign of remorse from the waratahs fall back,

infact he walks off the pitch with a smug smile,

Such an individuall should not be allowed to partake in our sport,

any idea how long he got banned from it?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 26, 2008 7:13 pm

  • Bloody Hell it was 7 and half years AGO! Why are you even talking about it anymore?

He went in front of the commission, was given his penalty and did the time.
    Get over it people!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 20, 2008 5:53 am

  • it made it worse how his own team mate had to drag him off,if i was o'gara i would get him banned for life and do him for assualt the cheat should have never walked on a rugby pitch again i would love to beat his smug little face to a pulp

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2009 11:41 pm

  • O'Gara "cleaned out" McRae with his elbows just before the fight started, after the ball left. He wasn't man enough to stand up and fight, just deliver a cheap shot and then lie on the ground and hope his forwards would turn up. They didn't, end of.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 05, 2010 9:58 am

  • Going on the characters of the two, you just know that McRae did not start that but he certainly finished it and he made a could job of it too.
