Ma'a Nonu puts in a huge hit on young Force center

Ma'a Nonu has once again made it onto Rugbydump, this time with this sensational tackle from this mornings Super 14 clash between the Hurricanes and the Force in Wellington.

Nonu was last seen on here this morning, when we posted the Friday Funny of him falling off his chair when trying to catch a cleared kick. Nonu lost his cool then, and we think he's still angry about the embarassing moment, and therefore decided to take it out on young Force center James O'Connor.

O'Connor is incredibly only 17 years old, and despite proving to be a really exciting prospect with ball in hand, is simply no match for the much larger Nonu. That, combined with the fact that he held on too long meant that O'Connor was the victim of one of the most devastaing hits of the season.

  • do any players in professional rugby use their arms anymore???

Its a legal requirement yet all i see being used is the shoulder... the frozen frames with this video show it perfectly!

  • I thought this tackle looked OK but your point is still a valid one. Nonu is one of the worst offenders too.
He is just a big nasty bully, picking on that poor little boy! He must have a small pen*s lol;)

  • Is he Irish? Wasn't that big a hit anyways, besides, as already noted, being completely illegal.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 5:57 pm

  • I thought its a gd hit, he tried to use his left arm to wrap him up. anyway, its a good timing on the tackle tho.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 6:08 pm

  • Good timing...he had all time in the world as the guy just stood there like selling hotdogs

    greetings from Germany

  • LOL @ the title image, the thought balloon with the chair in it...priceless.

  • wikid

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 7:07 pm

  • That wasnt an illegal hit. Just happens that he hit him so hard the kid was on the ground before he could complete the wrap.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 8:16 pm

  • I don't think it's the timing of the tackle that's in question here, it's the fact that he didn't really even *try* to use his arms to properly wrap, he just flopped them out there.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 10:41 pm

  • "That wasnt an illegal hit. Just happens that he hit him so hard the kid was on the ground before he could complete the wrap."

Horsecrap, he was in contact all the way to the ground.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 09, 2008 10:43 pm

  • That hit was legal, everyone is so caught up in the whole "use of shoulder" crap that they forget that to actually tackle someone you do have to use your shoulder, if you tackle anyone you use your shoulder! just because he didnt actually wrap his arms completely round the guy doesnt mean that it was illegal. I think the main penalty count for lack of use of arms is when you keep your arm close in to your body and basically do a league hit....!

Great tackle, Great Video, Great site!

  • Nothing wrong with this hit, I couldn't agree more with No7. You guys think that Brian Lima's crunching hit on Derick Hougaard came from the power in his arms? I highly doubt that.

Great hit, and 110% legal. If you think otherwise then you clearly don't understand the game and have never made a tackle or been tackled in your life.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 12:21 am

  • Of course you have to use your shoulder. But you also have to attempt to wrap *both* arms around the ball carrier. Nonu's arms flying forwards as a result of inertia does not constitute an attempt to wrap the tackled player. He, players like him, and the refs are all getting lazy about it. If you want to lose the wrap, go watch league.

  • theres absolutely nothing illegal about that anyone who has ever even played rugby will know that when tackling u dont try and hit some1 with ur arm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 10:30 am

  • please stop moaning. that was a perfectly legal tackle. his arms are as 'wrapped' as they can possibly be for someone who has just delivered such a massive hit with the shoulder... which is, as everyone's agreed, what you make contact with in the tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 10:54 am

  • admiration for the kid I'd say....
most players would crap their pants playing against Nonu...and this guy..only 17...got right back up from the hit...
just to put my own 2 cents:
-Tackle is fine, 1000% legal.totally agree with what Spaceman saya.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 2:36 pm

  • i thought it was legal (although thats a rarity for Nonu!)

    That poor child

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 4:10 pm

  • That was a great tackle, great timing and he completely owned the poor guy...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 4:34 pm

  • Imagine him and Mcalistar in the all blacks midfield, it would be incredible. If he doesn't get the 12 jersey I will cry.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 6:24 pm

  • that was legal. u can't tackle anyone with who has any speed or power with just an arm. top rugby players hav shoulder problems, not arm injuries.can peolpse stop reading the rule books any watchin tv and go and play rugby. then u can comment

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 10:16 pm

  • samoan power! another pacific hit for the archives :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 11, 2008 4:48 pm

  • an illegal tackle? you have got to be joking! i bet if you asked any ref any rugby player, even ask the kid himself who got tackled they would all agree it was a good "legal" tackle!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 12, 2008 1:20 am

  • Awesome tackle! There's no controversy, it's a legal hit...what the last guy said makes no sense? do you play? Have played? or even made a tackle in your life??? all you guys obsessed with arms wrapping around as if your flower arranging, do you even play rugby??? perfect tackle, lead with the shoulder, arms second, push with the legs, make sure your head is on the side of the body your shoulder hits with, enough said...

  • biznitchen. o'connor got absolutely raped there!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 13, 2008 8:20 pm

  • great hit! !
feel sorry for that kid tho playing supur rugby at 17 must be good player tho.

    By Blogger rogers8, at May 14, 2008 1:07 am

  • "people who are moaning about that hit being ilegal u need to get your head out of ur arse and go and play rugby instead of studying the rule book."

I do play, outside center, in fact. The fact that I do play is why I know the difference between wrapping your arms and *not* wrapping your arms.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2008 8:18 am

  • man some of you guys who complain about hits like that make me wonder! do you guys even play rugby? if you do, you guys must be those bitches that whine all the time while the game is going!! i would not want any of you whiners as a teammate thats for sure. as martin said stop reading rule books!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 14, 2008 9:21 pm

  • i bless myself whenever i see this tackle lloooll

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 19, 2008 11:51 pm

  • i hate how everyone criticises good tackles like this claiming their illegal, his left arm comes round and he tries to wrap but with impact like that its hard to do so. unless its a blatant shoulder charge i dont see the point in whining. its a stupid rule the wrapping one anyway. on a lighter note, fair play to the kid got straight back up its not like he was hit with a pillow .. nonu is a huge guy. good tackle, good attitude in getting back and getting on with it.
