Riaan Viljoen's 62m monster penalty for Griquas

As we saw earlier in the week with the big hits on Ross Skeate, giant killers Griquas pulled off a memorable win against the much fancied Western Province (Stormers in the Super 14) on the weekend in Kimberley.

The game ended 21-20 in favour of the home team, which came in part thanks to a kick of mammoth proportions from young fullback Riaan Viljoen.

Regular kicker Conrad Barnard had a shocker, missing four out of five, so young Viljoen stepped up and took over, slotting all three of his kicks on the day.

Kick number two, close to the touch line about 40m out, sailed over easily from a two step run-up. Western Province regained the lead through Willem De Waal, but then with less than ten minutes left in the game, shortly after a massive hit from Gcobani Bobo, a penalty was awarded well inside the Griquas ten meter line.

Viljoen had no hesitation, and confidently blasted the ball over for this incredible 62-meter kick that reclaimed the lead for his team, and in the end, was the difference between winning and losing.

Griquas captain Herkie Kruger, delighted with the win after going into the match as underdogs, had only one thing to say about the kick after the game.

"It was a monster of a kick."

Anyway, good kick, close to the old welsh kick (can't remember the name, but seen on rugbydump)

I was wondering about Dan Carter's kick against the Boks in SA a few yrs back in the tri-nations. THat was at their own 10m line as well. Post of that anyone?

it was a nice kick but julien is right paul thorburns kick against scotland was much further.
i think that it holds the record for furthest kick.

Great kick! After so long without any decent kickers SA seems to be breeding them prolifically (sp?) now.

ruggeryoda, yeah cos rugby's never been played in the wind before, and we see kicks like this go over every weekend...

I think it was a brilliant kick, one of the best I've seen, and the wind wasn't even that strong. I barely noticed it when watching the game, certainly no stronger than in any other game.

Thorburns would have been longer on the angle, but this is still a great kick. :)

paul thorburns kick is better Beacuse it is at a lower alturtud( Iff you didnt notice i cant spell haha . But im sure you understand what i mean )Plus he had quite a breeze behind him . this kick is still up there with the best though

Was 60m out, went off bar and post before going over for Tigers to win 13-12

Province losing, 62m penalty kick converted, and the hilarity of Owen Nkumane and Warren Brosnihan trying to out-gravel and out-macho each other. Hilarious stuff...

62m at altitude, sadly, is about 52 anywhere else. Search YouTube for francois steyns 61m kick at sea level and his drop goal against clermont from 60 odd too.
